How To Play YugiohIntro:
Okay I know most of you want minimum yap so I'm going to make this intro on how to play the Yugioh card game short simple and sweet. For those of you who already know how to play there are some rule variations on the post below this.
The Objective:In Yuhioh every player can start out with 2000, (for a short duel) 4000, (for a medium duel) or 8000 (for a regulation duel) Life Points. Your objective is to destroy all of your opponent's Life Points, or LP's for short. The person who loses all their life points first is the loser. To destroy all an opponents LP's you attack them with your monster cards, which we will get into later.
The Field:In all duels you are aloud to have five monster cards, five magic or trap cards, and one field spell card, on the field at one time. In a real duel you use a player mat which looks like this.
[/img]The player mat also has a place for your deck, your fusion deck, and your graveyard. On Gaia though we have a player mat variation for dueling online, which looks like this.

The first number set of five are your monster placement areas, the second are your magic and trap placement areas. There is also an area to place your field spells and graveyard.
The Types of Monsters and How to Summon Them:In Yugioh there are four types of monsters, they are, Normal, Effect, Ritual, and Fusion. Normal monsters have no special effects and are colored in yellow. Effect monsters do have a special affect that can be used and are colored red. Ritual monsters are monsters that have to be special summoned (which we will get into later) using a magic card and Ritual they are colored blue. Fusion monsters are monsters that are summoned when two monsters are fused together using the magic card polymerization and are colored purple.

[/img]Now these cards are not any use just lying around you have to learn how to summon them. There are three kinds of summons; these are normal summons, tribute summons, and special summons. A normal summon is when you summon a card that has a star level of four or less. (The star level can be found right below the monster name) Tribute summons are when you summon a monster that is five star level and up. As the name would make you think you have to tribute a monster on the field to summon a monster five star and up. The list of tribute is as follows levels, 5-6 stars one monster must be sacrificed, 7 and up two monsters must be sacrificed. Special summons usually have to do with effects, magic and traps, the card will determine what the summon type is.
Summoning Monsters:You can only summon one monster per turn and there are several different ways. You can summon it in attack position, which is face up. You can summon it in defense, which is face up sideways. You can also summon it in facedown defense position, which is facedown sideways. In attack position you can attack opponent monsters, but if your monster is destroyed you will take damage to your LP’s. In defense position you cannot attack but, if your monster is destroyed you will not loose any LP’s. In facedown defense position you cannot attack but, your card will remain facedown until attacked and if destroyed you with not loose and LP’s.
Magic and Trap Cards and How to Use Them:There are several types of magic and trap cards they are Equip, Quick Play, Continuous, Field, Counter, and Ritual. Magic and Trap cards can be very useful in evening out the match if used correctly. Every Magic and Trap card has an effect of some kind so be sure to read all the print. Now Equip cards are cards that can be equipped to a monster, Quick Play are cards that can be played during your opponents turn, Continuous are cards that are always on the field unless they are destroyed. Now Field cards are extremely useful but you and your opponent may only have one on the field on once, so that means if your have a field magic card in play and your opponent uses a field magic card of his own yours is destroyed. Counter cards are used to counter opponent moves and a Ritual card is the card you need to summon a Ritual Monster.
Before You Play:
In a real duel you and your opponents would both check to make sure that both your decks have at least 40 cards in it. There is no limit in real duels but here on Gaia, for several reasons, the maximum number of cards you can have in a deck is 80. After you have checked each other’s decks you both draw 5 cards and you play rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to choose the order.
Actually Playing:There are several phases to a turn in a duel and they are listed below...
Draw Phase: The first phase of a turn, you are required to draw one card from the top of your deck. The maximum number of cards you can have in your hand is seven. If you are unable to draw because your deck is empty than your are declared the loser.
Standby Phase: Technically an empty space between your Draw Phase and Main Phase 1.
Main Phase 1: The phase were you are aloud to summon monsters and place magic and trap cards on the field. You can place any number of magic and traps down as long as it doesn't exceed the placement areas. You may only summon one monster per turn.
Battle Phase:
1.) Start Step: This is the step were you choose which monster is attacking which.
2.) Battle Step: The actual point of attack were an opponent can counter with a magic or trap.
3.) Damage Step: The step were you calculate damage. (Which we will talk about later) If you want to attack again with a different monster than repeat steps 1-3.
4.) End Step: The end of the Battle Phase
Main Phase 2:
Just like Main Phase one but remember you can only summon one monster per turn not phase.
End Phase: The end of the turn
Attacking with Monsters: The monsters in Yugioh have to stats these are attack (ATK) and defense (DEF). When you attack and opponent without any monsters on the field that is called direct damage and the damage is subtracted from his/her LP’s. If you attack another monster than you take your monsters ATK and subtract it from your opponents ATK like this.
Your Opponents Monster >2000
Your Monster >2100
-__________________________
-100
Remember your opponent’s monster is always on the top of the problem. If the outcome is negative like it is above than subtract that from your opponents LP’s and destroy his monster. (When a monster is destroyed it’s sent to the graveyard pile) If the outcome is positive, subtract it from your own LP’s. If you attack a monster that is in defense or facedown and destroy it than your opponent takes now damage to their LP’s.
