Haha. I've only just recently heard of it. Oddly enough, I picked out my character's name before I heard about Fruits Basket's association with the Zodiac. o.O
I dunno why there's a manga about it... probobly just for the same reason every other manga has for picking their topics/ themes... 'cause they can!
