Pools of Ebony:

It was winter, the mountain tops of the Rockies were covered with fresh white powder and that made it a very well known place for vacationing skiers and snowboarders looking to get in a good run on the slopes. That wasn’t where he was going though, no he had a better place in mind and it was someplace he hadn’t been in a long while. He planned to visit his old haunts, see some old friends and maybe make some new contacts. Yes, Kenneth Kain was looking forward to going back to Memory.

The city founded on thievery, corruption, and murder. It was a place that Kain could call home, more so than any other place he had ever visited.

“We will be landing in Memory California Presidential Airport in just a few minutes folks, please put your tray tables and seats in their upright positions as we begin our descent.”

Kain smiled as his hand gripped the shade to the window next to his seat. He was in coach, but that never bothered him. He got to be close to all the other passengers. He could listen to others conversations, leer at the young woman across the way from him, and even invade the personal space of the person next to him. This was definitely a place he could enjoy more often if he really chose to do so. The fact that the people next to him or anywhere in his vicinity seemed to think he was just your “Average Joe” amused him greatly.

The plane touched down safely and connected with the terminal to the airport with out any real trouble. In less than a half an hour, Kain was wading through the throngs of people all clamoring to get to their destinations. Whether it be to the baggage claim or rushing to the next terminal, everyone seemed to be buzzing about as if they were the most important person in the world.
All Kain could think about was getting away from everyone.

He had learned a long time ago to control his ability, but there were occasions where he felt that control slip. He could change any aspect of his body to suit what he wanted; he was a human chameleon, a shape shifter that could specify his change down to his fingerprints. If he wanted a long nose all he had to do was think and it would happen. The problem with busy airports was that there were too many people around! Too many distractions pulling at his control. Kain wasn’t stupid of course; he knew that would happen when he made his way into places like this.
It was a hazard of his trade unfortunately, and one he had dealt with before.

The one thing he found that caused his control to slip were families; especially happy families. It was something he never had. His mother gave him up for adoption when he was born and he never saw her again, never thought about her. He spent the first five years of his life in a military hospital being tested day after day. He was poked and prodded over and over like he was some form of lab rat. When he was younger he never thought about it, but as he got older he started asking questions. At around his fifth birthday, he remembered asking the nurse why he was still being tested and why he was here. Fortunately for Kain the nurse had been drinking a little too much at his birthday party and let it slip that; when he was born and opened his eyes for the first time and was able to focus on the woman that was his mother, his face quickly changed to that of his mothers and then back.

When the military was done with him, they shipped him to a foster home. The problem there was that the foster parents didn’t know he had this ability and the military sure as hell weren’t going to say anything. There were three other children at the home and each one seemed to be nice enough when the parents were around, but as soon as the parental figures had left they teased Kain relentlessly. He still couldn’t control his abilities, any time he focused on anything for longer than ten seconds he would change. Needless to say, young children aren’t too fluent in tact or that teasing someone for being different was frowned upon. Kain never understood why the parents never picked him, and a sense of resentment started to build within him. He decided that if he wasn’t going to be adopted then he would sharpen his mind. Maybe he could win the potential parents over with his smarts.

That never happened either. Kain did get smarter though, and by the time he was sixteen he had excelled in school so much that the teachers wanted to skip him ahead a couple of grades. He had two more years before he was considered an adult and set loose on the uncaring world. The foster parents agreed to skip him, saying that “It will be good for his self esteem.” and left it at that. Kain watched as he got older, the boys and girls that got sent to the home he was at getting adopted and being sent to live with new parents that loved them for no other reason than wanting to have a child. That resentment grew within his mind and started to show itself in dangerous ways. He started off like most sociopaths, torturing and killing small animals. He was no different in the idea of having that control made him feel in control of himself.

Months went by and Kain would capture and torture quite a few animals, cats, dogs, squirrels, rabbits, he even got a hold of a pig at one point. Each time he pushed his anger further, pushed his control over the smaller animals to the brink. He created rituals for each type of animal he got his hands on. Cats and dogs were skinned alive and then nailed to a wooden plank. After an hour of pure agony for the animal, Kain would finally show some mercy in slicing the jugular of the poor creature and let it bleed out.

Kain always kept a trophy from each of his animals. It wasn’t anything as obvious as a head or a tail or even a rib. No, Kain was more perverse than that. He wanted to know the creature was dead, but not know which animal he had killed when he would go back to his treasure trove of trophies. He would take the fourth vertebra from the base of the neck of each animal. Something so obscure that only he knew what it meant.

He seemed to float through the terminal, his feet carrying him as if he was on autopilot, until he reached the baggage claim. He really didn’t have any luggage, but that didn’t stop him from watching the crowd milling about. He laughed to himself as he compared the scene to a slaughter house. All the cows being led into the house to be butchered and bled dry, chopped up and then ground into tiny little lumps to be fed to a mass of ravenous gluttonous humans. He laughed then, loudly and it was a full laugh that reached from deep within his belly and rolled through his shoulders. The people that were around him didn’t stay long. Kain straightened himself up and shook his head. He realized why he despised humans so much at that very moment. Not only were they so predictable, but they had no idea about anything. If they knew that the bags didn’t take an hour to get from the plane to the conveyor belt would they do anything? No. They would wait and say it was because they were making sure all the bags were off the plane. It wasn’t the fact that the bags were being thoroughly checked by two workers to see what stuff they could pilfer. Humans were so simple and repetitive; it made him sick at how much they had given up for their so called “freedom.”

If they knew how chained down they were, this airport would be utter chaos. He was free, truly free, and Kain reveled in that as often as he could. If the human police knew half the things he had done since he was twelve, they would write psychology books, term papers, and psychosis studies about him that would cross the country a hundred times before they were done. He smiled inwardly again. He wasn’t hanging around the baggage claim for any particular reason, but as he saw a large hard backed case pass by twice before anyone would claim it he stepped forward. He grabbed it quickly and stepped back. The case was heavy, real heavy but it didn’t matter. What ever was inside would either become his or sold to the highest bidder.

Kain moved away from the baggage claim and towards the door that would lead him outside, but as he was moving toward the door he heard a loud yell. He turned in time to see a young Asian man was screaming his head off about a lost piece of luggage. Kain didn’t hear the whole conversation, but it was definitely something about architect designs. Wonderful. Kain thought, I can sell them as my own and make some money on the side. Wonder what they are for though. I’ll check later I guess. He then stepped outside onto the sidewalk.

The loading and unloading zone was busy as always, but that didn’t bother Kain as much. He had his abilities well under control. The reminiscing he had done was able to keep his mind off the thousands of people in the terminal. This was only small groups that was easy to deal with. He stood the hard case up and waited, casually standing off to the side as if he were waiting for someone to pick him up. He hadn’t called a cab or anything, he didn’t need to. He had played this game many times; it was one of the first things he found that was fun as soon as he could control his ability. He would watch for someone that was alone and follow them, kill them or otherwise obstruct them from moving and change into them, go to the car with car keys in hand and then drive off with no one being the wiser.

Kain was about to step forward after a particularly well dressed business man but found himself stopping in his tracks. He saw a red sports car pass by him, a convertible too boot, with a couple inside. From what he could tell, she was blonde and a looker, an L.A. ten was a term he had heard before on a radio program in southern California a while ago, it the term was true she was definitely one of them. The guy didn’t look like much, an average Joe so to speak, so how he got a hold of her was beyond Kain. He had never understood human mating rituals or dating or even attraction to the opposite sex. Sure he found, what he saw, of the woman good looking but he didn’t want to get to know her. He saw them kiss, and was truly surprised at the lewdness of it. It was something that was usually saved for softcore porn or even hardcore porn. It was a kiss that promised so much more when he got back from where ever he was going.

Kain watched as the man jumped out of the car and opened the trunk. He smiled and anyone that saw it would know it promised horrible things. Another kiss and the two finally parted ways. He knew he would have to act fast, and as soon as the man was inside Kain shifted his identity. His face seemed to melt and turn, his eyes changing color and his body growing slightly. He then ran to the car and tapped the side door. The woman looked at him a little surprised.

“You’re going to be late for your flight baby.” she said more than a little shocked.

Kain smirked and held up one finger. He motioned for her to wait and then ran back into the ticket counters. He looked around and saw who he was looking for. He shifted his features slightly again and took on the appearance of a foreigner. He tapped the man on the shoulder and smiled, his features were oriental so his eyes squinted more than normal.

“Can I help you?” the man said a little annoyed.

“Yes you can, I was looking for the restrooms.” Kain said his voice edged with an oriental accent.

“Over there.” the man said after pointing to them.

“Ah thank you.” Kain watched as the man turned back around and he slowly bent down and grabbed the guy’s suitcase and walked towards the restroom.

It took the guy a few seconds to realize his bag was missing before he looked up. Kain had been walking slowly, very slowly; to make sure he was seen.

‘Hey!” the man said as he moved out of line to chase after Kain. “That’s my bag!”

Kain moved faster and dashed into the bathroom. The man right on his heels and gaining ground. Kain ran into the handicap stall and waited. Within seconds, his target had entered. The restroom was almost empty and Kain made sure he was obvious in his hiding spot. A pair of shoes stopped right in front of his stall.

“Come out of there!” the man yelled angrily.

Kain stood up and shuffled about; he placed the suitcase in the corner and then stood up on the seat. He was making it look like he was trying to hide, but what he was really doing was getting ready to attack. Kain reached down and untied his shoe and quickly pulled the lace free from the polished leather. He wrapped one end around his hand and let the other hang free.

There was a loud “Bang!” followed by another and the man yelling again, “I know you’re in there, give me back my bag!”

Kain stood still and waited.

The man pounded on it again and this time Kain reached out and unlocked the door. Turning the small metal lock slowly, quietly, barely moving it to make sure it made no noise. The next time the man banged on the door would be his last time he did anything.

Sure enough the next slam shot the door open; Kain was waiting as the surprised gentleman stared at himself! Kain quickly lunged, wrapping the shoelace around his neck and pulling it tight. He then pulled the man inside and shut the stall door. Oh how he struggled. Kain reveled in each jerk, each pull, but he knew the man was as good as dead. He needed to hear the man speak of course, or else his ruse wouldn’t work, but now he had heard him, heard him yell and heard him annoyed. He could gauge just how to use the pitch to make it seem like it was him. Kain pulled tighter as he felt his victims muscles weaken slightly, pulled as hard as he could on the slowly suffocating victim in his grasp. He wanted to decapitate him, pull the string so tight that it pulled his head right off, but knew that was unlikely. With a sudden burst of strength the man tried to break free once again. Kain was a skilled killer, the victim, the human, had no chance. Kain walked calmly out of the restroom a minute later, his body draped in the clothes of his latest kill, and carrying his new suitcase, his face fixed to the former owners as well. He headed back out to the loading and unloading terminal.

He jogged right up to the car and leaned in for another (but a first one for Kain) lewd and lascivious kiss from the blond.

The blond blinked a few times and then placed her hand to her chest; “Baby, you took my breath away.” she blushed.

“I needed another one.” Kain said with a smile.

“Well with a kiss like that you make a girl want more than just a kiss.”

“Let me get my bag in the trunk and we’ll do a lot more than that.” Kain said with a wink.

“What about your flight?”

“I canceled it, save me some money, besides. Why would I want to leave a sweet thing like you
all alone?” Kain went to get the case that held the blueprints in it, and went to the back of the car. “Pop the trunk.”

The blond did as she was asked and waited as Kain put the bags inside. He hadn’t been through either of them but it didn’t matter. He would have plenty of time after he had finished having his fun with the blond. He didn’t know if the girl’s body would be identifiable after he was done with her but then again that never bothered Kain before and it certainly didn’t bother him now.

He closed the trunk and then hopped into the passenger seat, “Let’s go home baby.” he said with a smile.

The girl shifted the car into drive and exited the loading zone. Her parents would never hear from her again, her family would go for years wondering where her body was and the only link they would ever have was the fact that the airport cameras had shown her drive off with her boyfriend. The boyfriend that would be found in the airport restroom hanging from the stall by a shoe lace. No note, no anything would explain what had happened. No evidence would ever confirm it either. The blonds’ family would never find her killer or her body.

Kain liked it that way.
