Here's my problem: When I'm messing around with an idea (especially complicated ones), I usually end up never finishing (and going on tangents...)

What do I mean by complicated?
For example, I have an idea to take a Phygian with a raised 6th and try and make something bluesy out of it.

"Oh, hey! John Frusciante songs! I should learn them!"

And then here I am, complaining about how I have no focus in finishing my ideas.

Any suggestions? Tips? Insults?

I have the same problem....I'll come up with something then take it 50 directions and write 3 different variations of each and never settle for one. Worse, I'll never write it down because my mind and hands go to fast for my own good...I just try to write the very first thing I come up with and try to make a structured song out of that one version, and when I'm done then I'll let myself mess around. That doesn't work too well though....

It looks like we share a wonderful curse my friend....

Takes time. Some bands have songs that have taken 2-3 years to write. Iced Earth's "Dante's Inferno" is 16 minutes long, took their guitarist 3 years to write it. A bunch of Morbid Angel songs took a year or two.

I know what you mean, my whole band has that problem...

The way I think about it...if your not concentrating on the song your writing, then it's not fun for you, as music should be smile

I recommend recording your riffs, then jam over it, each time you find a new way to play it, record it. This is how I "perfect" my riffs and solos. Then take a break and listen to it later, breaks kinda "refresh" your creative palette!
