You should also clarify if you're talking about the Anime or the Manga, since they have different endings (as far as I know)

The good guys win and Ryuk does what he said he'd do in the beginning. He said he'd be the one to kill Light and so he was. Light couldn't comprehend what was going on or how he could have been outsmarted so he went insane rather quickly.
Mello and his team switched the Deathnote with a regualar notebook so when the names were written down it meant nothing.
