I'm hoping all of you are well aware of the phrase "crossing over." Right now I'm wondering if someone can do this, but still be alive. Can it be done? What skills would the person need to know? Is there any information they should know, perhaps something you think they already do know, but surprisingly don't? How would it be done? Could the person return? How does this differ from astral projection? What are the risks (physical, mental, spiritual, ect.)? What happens if they get stuck?
Thanks for helping, peoples. <3

Isn't "crossing over" what out of body projection is in the first place? Everything I've read about astral projection and OBE suggests you can contact the dead while out of body, even dwell with them in the etheric.
So I'm not sure I see much difference in "crossing over" and "astral projection".

You mean complete separation of soul (not in part, such as astral or etheric bodies) and body, correct Nudgie?
If so, I don't think so. The body would shut down and you'd be permanently removed XD...

This conjures to mind a post I read were the writter was listing a few "astral nasties" that they felt like listing apparently. One of them, which he coined the name of "sorcerous undead" for, reminded me of the ghosts of the Harry Potter world. His explaination of them was something like, 'they are the product of adept practicioners escaping the coils of death for a mockery of life', or something like that.
Depending what one believes about souls, their creations and such, what exists aside from this world here, what can be done in ones belief system, and what is or isn't something else (OoBE, Astral Projection, Etheric Projection, Energetic Projection, Mental Projection, etc); I can't really say what is or is not possible. For what its worth I can muse that with some extraordinarily adept individuals, a freakish amount of planning and preperation, and alot of help, I think it would be plausible to do something like what BlkCat said without the consequences that would seem logical, mostly due to the adeptness and planning. Though, I don't think it is a feasible enough idea to humour for a long time due to the highly improbable odds of an attempt like what I am imagining happening and us being well informed about it, if at all.
I'll try to come back and answer your actually listed questions later tomorrow. Are you new?

Can crossing over (to what I assume is some sorta realm of the dead, amirite?) be done with the person surviving? Sure, I guess -- Otherwise I'm sure we'd have heard about a recent spate of new-agers and occultists being found comatose or dead surrounded by incense thurifiers and the like.
What skills would you need to know? Seperating mind from body, I suppose - if you consider wherever you're going to be part of the "astral realm" you'd have to be able to distinguish fact from fiction in the astral - otherwise you turn into a Hysteric "OMG I saw a plant with four dog's heads on it surrounded by fire and he said his name was Lucifer" storyteller. I've seen the same thing in my imagination, and for what it's worth, it's just as real.
I don't know about what information you should know.. how to /stop/ the thing would be good. How to prevent things following you back... how to find whatever you're looking for (if anything).
How it'd be done -- however you "go astral" or have an OBE, I think. Then just... I dunno. Press triangle and check your astral map for any doors you haven't checked yet. Seriously, I've no idea.
Risks? I dunno. Again, there doesn't seem to be enough of new-age-practitioners-dying-under-mysterious-circumstances news stories going about for me to think you're in serious danger, but I guess it's better safe than sorry. Any risk I suggested would only be speculation.

Mitsh Otherwise I'm sure we'd have heard about a recent spate of new-agers and occultists being found comatose or dead surrounded by incense thurifiers and the like. Off-Topic: A real incident like that would be awesome. Something dramatic that would force everyone to take another good look at the occult. <.<;

Like poisoning by some herb or plant that isn't generally tested for toxicity levels. Or even carbon monoxide from the incense? Something. I don't think they'd be too worried. I mean, they don't really flip out over spontaneous human combustion, so why would they flip out over random people being found dead for no obvious reason? On a side note, this reminds me of Lullaby, and it makes me really happy. That was quite possibly my favorite Palahniuk book.

I've been going by "Pah-LAHN-yook", but I'm 75% sure that's wrong.
