I know this sounds kind of braggy, but I know that I am a great guitarist, but I am the exact opposite of a writer. I try to write, but I always fail. I seem to not be able to fit myself in a style I like. It's a complicated life being a musician. Its tough. I'm not a writer, but I hope to be someday. I want to be able to express my emotions through lyricism. When I do write music, I can't make the words fit into music. Maybe I'm not a musician. You guys think you can help me through this delima?

You dopn't have to be an amazing, or even good lyricist to be a musician. You have a specialty, so stick with that. I also connot write music, no matter how hard I try. Just wait till you get that bright idea, then write it down, expand till its dead, then put it aside, and wait for the next idea. Put the good parts together. Thats how I write essays and crap for school.

I'm an intellectual. Not very poetic. I can't create the ebs and flows of lyrics that my idols can. Essays in school come very easy for me. Usually on tests, I break state records. I can create music through a guitar, but not everyone can feel what I feel when I play. All they think is, he is good. I just want to be able to write lyrics to let people understand how I feel. The problem is that I don't ever know what I feel. Its so hard for me to describe emotion, wants, needs......

Dude, you definitely don't have to be able to write lyrics to be a musician. Just be happy with being able to write good riffs and etc. But if you really want to be able to write, think of the really good, bad, sad, or weird things in your life and think of good describing words, try to rhyme and use a rhyme style.

your description of yourself reminds me a lot of me. although i try to be a bit more modest about my playing. everyone who visits while im practicing or something is like woah thats awesome but if they havent heard me chances are they dont even know i play.
i am great at riffing and i can come up with killer songs minus the lyrics. its just that nothing sounds good to me for the lyrics. everything is either way too blunt of way to artsy fartsy for me to be happy with what ive written. i find that looking at what other local guitarists write makes me feel better about my own work because i think my stuff sucks but man they take suck to a whole new level. and a lot of classics that nearly everyone has heard are actually pretty stupid when you think about them or have pretty lame/lazy guitaring.
its the same way i learned how to play "if all those crackheads can do it so well so can i" and i taught myself using that moto. seriously you gotta make your fingers move to where they need to be just like you gotta make your words and riffs match.
within 6 months id passed up 3 friends who had been taking lessons for years but i can never find a band i like. first one, they were too lazy, second one was pretty good in that i got to write everything but the lyrics and drums for 3 strings parts but the guys writing the lyrics and drums thought they were the sh!t. i quit and everyone but those two followed me out. after that they really were the sh!t or at least thats what they sounded like. haha. third one im currently in is hard to describe. its not the greatest either...

It's what set's the greats apart from others, songwriting, not even lyrics, just song structure and such.
Take Kurt from Nirvana, not at all the most technically gifted guitarist, but his riffs are very catchy.
Just work on it biggrin Eventually you will find that inspiration and pass over the wall that I see so many other musicians trapped behind biggrin

Kurt Cobain is a really good example. He isn't the greatest guitar player but he can express his emotion through his guitar playing. Then look at his lyrics, he isn't bothered by the use of standard words, he uses abstract words that not many people would think about to express himself. Can you think of a better way to say 'I love you' than "I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black"?
The whole point is, be happy you can make good music, and if you can't come up with lyrics, try using some abstract or unconventional words or phrases. I take it you're good in school, so if you're also good in English, that could help you out a bit. If all else fails, make an instrumental.

My riffs(atleast my better ones) are pretty decent nothing extreme but good. But I can't sing so I don't even attempt lyrics. But my bands singer says he sings about his feelings if that helps.
