"MOOOOM! HURRY UP! YOU PROMISED!"
Evelyn trailed along behind her eldest son at a comfortable pace, ignoring his pleas for speed. She was in no hurry; there was time yet before the sun would begin to set, time enough to reach their destination and take up a comfortable vantage point before the color even began to light up the sky.
"We have time, Connor." her gentle voice trailed after him, melodic and tranquil.
"BUT MOOOOM-" The colt reared, spinning on his hindquarters to face his mother. "If we don't hurry, we won't get there first!" In his mind, every creature in the forest was moving to watch the setting sun, and the brilliant display of colors that followed. They weren't, of course, but... to Connor, they were.
Everything was a race with him. Perhaps when he was older, he would gain some measure of patience... but for now, he was naught but a rambunctious colt with too much energy to spare.
Evelyn sighed, and increased her pace just enough to ease her son's whining.
Connor noted his mother's increase in pace, and grinned broadly.
He spun about once more, his lanky legs threatening to wobble off balance. He started off again at a brisk trot, his wide orchid-hued eyes fixed upon the sky.
"Hey Mom? Why is the sky blue?"
"Watch the ground, Connor, love. Do you wish to run into another tree?" A mother's patience, a mother's understanding, a mother's pride, and a mother's gentle reproach shone in her lavender eyes.
"The sky is blue due to..."
Connor's mind began to wander as he listened to his mother's response, his eyes still fixed upon the sky. He was already thinking up another question.

Azure hues were closed in the tranquility of silence and solitude as the lone stallion stood on his high perch atop the cliffside, simply enjoying the feel of the breeze throughout his ebony mane and forelocks. He had spent much of his time in this place during the past few weeks... it didn't feel right to disrupt the family that Evelyn and Bliss had created. She was his friend, but not his lover... and it didn't feel right to stand between the couple, especially not with their children nearby- despite Evelyn's reassurances.
An almost inaudible sigh escaped the winged stallion's mouth as he shifted atop his ledge. Without the warm company that his silver friend had provided, he had spent all of his time wandering alone, wondering whether the time would ever be right to re-introduce himself, and meet her foals. Had they hatched yet? Were any of them like her? His curiosity prodded at his mind, but it wasn't enough to spur a reaction. He would return when the time was right, and not before... whenever that would be.
One ebon' tipped ear twitched backwards as the sound of a young voice echoed through the air, disrupting his peaceful silence. His features twisted in a wry grimace, but immediately fell blank upon hearing the soft, melodic voice of the mare that had so often occupied his thoughts. Cerulean orbs opened to look back towards the pair emerging from the foliage, widening when he saw the young colt emerging with his familiar mother.
Turning to face them, he let a ghost of a smile flit across his features briefly before they fell into his stoic mask again, dipping his head curtly in greeting. "Salutations." A flicker of... something crossed his eyes as he noted the similarity in appearance of the colt to his father, shifting uncomfortably as he resettled his wings against his sides.

She knew that voice. It was a voice whose melody had not graces her ears in far too long. A voice that she had yearned to hear, if only for a moment, if only for a change in the shrill and betimes harried melodies that rang from the voices of her... 'family.'
Evelyn's gaze flickered, darting from her son to the stallion that had spoken only moments before.
Kureno. He's back.
Connor's eyes flung wide opened, his pupils enlarged to the size of a two-legged's plate. He made a strange squeaking noise, one that had previously only been known to come from a mouse or other small woodland creature, and scrambled behind his mother in a trot-gallop-wobble that lacked any semblance of grace.
He poked his head out from behind her rump to glare sullenly at the strange stallion, small chest heaving as he sought to regain his breath.
"Moooom... why... why's that... why's that stranger talkin' to us?" His voice wobbled, cracking on the last syllable.
Connor had no right to be wary of strangers. He'd never met anyone outside of his immediate family, having been only recently emerged from his basket, and of all the tales he'd heard made them out to be not so bad. Even so... he was frightened.
Evelyn blinked slowly, Connor's words causing her greeting to be lost in a haze of confusion. Stranger? What stranger? The only one around was...
Of course. Kureno had left before the colts had gained the strength to leave their baskets.
She turned her head ever so slightly, just enough so that Connor could see the sincerity in her eyes.
"He is no stranger, love." she murmured softly, a bemused smile turning the corners of her mouth upwards even as she spoke. "His name is Kureno. He is... a good friend of mine." Her gaze flickered back to Kureno, and she hesitated slightly, wondering if he would balk at being called so.
Evelyn straightened, oblivious to the fact that as she did so her neck arched into a pretty curve. The soft wind that had been blowing since the first light of that day performed an intricate dance with her mane, flirting with her tail and causing it to curl lightly.
"My greetings to you." She responded with the words she had spoken in response to his rather gruff greeting when they had first met so many moons ago. This time, there was pleasure lurking in the depths of her melodious voice.
It was good to see him again.
Connor glared at 'Kureno' suspiciously, his fright momentarily forgotten.
"Whatcha mean, good friend? If he's a friend, why'dn't he come see us?" He spoke to his mother, though his tone was not at all hushes. His orchid-hued eyes flickered over the large stallion, lingering on his wings and on the intricate patterns upon his dusky coat.
"Nicetameetcha, I guess. I'm Connor." His tail flickered once, and he shifted his feet restlessly.
"An' why'd... why'd he not..." he pondered it for a moment, attempting to phrase the question that had been forming in his mind "... why'dn't you take us ta see 'im, if he couldn't come to us? He LOOKS fine!"
Connor, gaining courage, stuck his neck further out from behind his mother's rump.

Unsure of how to respond at first, Kureno was tempted to simply remain silent- as was his method before he'd met Evelyn- simply appraising the small, brown colt with a raised eyebrow. He seemed to have a bit of an odd speech impediment, but he supposed he'd heard worse. It was a bit uncomfortable to be scrutinized by the tiny foal and questioned- he was tempted to return the glare he was receiving, but that wouldn't make him appear any more mature. Interacting with children had never been one of his strong points...
It was good to see Evelyn again; that much he might admit, if pressed- to her, if no one else. He had become accustomed to finding her on his walks, or simply catching sight of her solitary form among the foliage below as he flew overhead- he might even have gone as far as to say that it irked him that he could no longer do so, in the past weeks. He didn't suppose that that would change now, either, what with her foals and that imbecile Bliss insisting that he be at her side from now on.
He almost allowed his features to twist into a scowl at the thought of that infuriating stallion, but remembered that he was in the presence of others, and schooled his expression back into the stoic mask that he always wore. Upon hearing Evelyn refer to him as a 'good friend', however- and sounding rather unsure about the title- he offered her what he hoped was a reassuring smile; although in reality, it was probably only a miniscule quirking of the corner of his mouth with an acknowledging nod. He still didn't have this 'smiling' business down, and somehow doubted he ever would.
Hearing the same phrase he remembered her offering him when they first met almost, almost overcame that mask of his and drew a tiny smile out, but his expression remained the same... save for the bit of warmth and recognition that flitted through his cerulean gaze. Knowing her, though, and how well she knew him, he doubted she had missed it, so he supposed the effect was the same.
Ears twitching forward at the agitated murmurings of the young colt, azure irises lowered to fix upon the small form questioningly. Connor, was it? He supposed he should have been grateful that blithering idiot hadn't named his son 'Bliss Jr.' and had him carry on the humiliating legacy. "It's... nice to meet you, too, Connor," his voice was low and rough, like it always was, but there was a hint of warmth there that would be difficult to pick up on for someone who wasn't familiar with his persona.
He cast an inquisitive look up at Evelyn then, wondering why she hadn't brought the subject up with her children. Perhaps she'd thought it a good idea that he not be involved in her foals' lives? He couldn't really imagine another reason why she would neglect to mention his existence at all- and he couldn't say that it was a bad reason, either. The thought made something inside him twist, and not in a good way. He shrugged it off absently, shaking his head as he turned back to answer the little foal's question. "Your father and I don't get along at all. It probably wouldn't be a good idea for me to visit with him around."

Evelyn's heart warmed at the minuscule changes in the lines of Kureno's face, at the fleeting flash of warm recognition in his cerulean eyes. She had missed his subtle ways, his lack of wasting words or expressions... even his stoic mask, his shield to the world about him, hairline cracks revealing glimpses of what lay beneath to those who had the eyes to see.
"He must have had his reasons, Connor, love." she whispered, her voice low enough that the wind threatened to carry it away. Her gaze rested upon Kureno.
There had been little time to ponder his absence, but when a spare moment revealed itself... when Bliss was entertaining the boys or they had marched down to the stream for a path... her thoughts had turned to the hole in her heart. To the absence of the only one whom she could call friend.
Over the course of many such fleeting moments, she had wondered: Does he no longer wish to know a mare with family? A mare who had become so emotional over the course of her pregnancy that she could not even take a walk alone? A mare who...? Whose children bore resemblance to their father?
All but the youngest had some trace of Bliss in them. Jamison was his mother in miniature. Connor was practically a clone of his father, lacking only his father's cream mane. Ian was a mixture of the two, a balance of light and dark...
She had not told her sons of Kureno. She had not wanted to fix the idea in their minds that Mommy's Friend was coming, that he would play with them and maybe help them win a game of Tag with Dad, only to have them be let down if he did not show up... and for that matter, she had not wanted to fool herself into thinking that he would always be back. In the past, he had, but with the children... who could know?
She blinked quickly, banishing those unwelcome thoughts. He was here now, wasn't he?
A hopeful glow crawled it's way into her lavender gaze.
Connor blinked, darting out from behind his mother to stare defiantly up at the winged stallion. "Why'dya mean, you don't get along wi' Dad at all?" His was as of yet unused to forming coherent sentences, struggling to form his racing thoughts into words others could understand. With time, he would get the hang on conversation, perhaps even mimicking his mother's skill, but... for now, his mangled speech would have to do.
His forehead wrinkled as both eyebrows threatened to burrow themselves into his forelock. "An' couldn't you just come ta see Mom? Like... like... NOT see Dad, but come talk t' Mom?" He titled his head, entire body wiggling in excitement. He looked back and forth between his mother and the Kureno, whom he had seemed to have accepted as a fact of life and not some scary stranger who wanted to eat his heart "I could help! I could... could... say i'm going to see the sunset with Mom, like t'day, but not REALLY go and then... then... you... guys... could..."
His eyes shot back to the older stallion, and a frown dragged the corners of his lips down. "Hey... how COME you don't get along wi' Dad, anyway?"

It was slightly discomforting, to have no excusable reason for his absence, but all the same, there was something unpleasant in the thought that Eve, the only mare that he would have admitted to being a good friend, would hesitate to say if he would return. He had no desire to disappear from her life completely, but that idiot Bliss had been somewhat of a deciding factor in what sort of part he could play in her life from this point on.
He shifted his weight uneasily at the young foal's question, pondering a way to approach this subject without blatantly offending this kin of the blathering fool that he so obviously despised. It was... more than uncomfortable, this resemblance between the little colt before him to Bliss, and Eve's desire to keep the idiot in her life had had some influence on his time away, not that he would admit that to anyone out loud. Ever.
His gaze softened minutely at the offer from the small soquili, and the excitement that seemed palpable simply at the prospect of spending time with him. Fleetingly, he wondered what it would be like to be the father of a foal such as this one... to be affectionate to a youngling, more so than he felt the desire to protect this one. Abruptly, he banished the thought, irked that it had permeated his thoughts to begin with. He had never known his father, and had no desire to play that part in anyone else's life. The disappointment was something he wouldn't wish upon anyone.
Shaking the thought off, he eyed the small replica of his enemy with a curious eye, wondering absently why he would be so willing to lie to his father for someone he barely knew. Was that an inkling of warmth, somewhere inside of him? He didn't care to explore the possibility, dismissing it instead and wondering how best to answer his innocent question.
"We had... conflicting views on how best to approach the situation with you and your mother," he explained simply, unwilling to go into more detail on the subject. He supposed that even the buffoon could be a better father than he could, if he even wanted to. There wasn't an ounce of paternal instinct within him, and he refused to think that any sort of affection towards this child could be considered fatherly. He was simply the son of his only friend, and he would only think of him as such.
Glancing back up at the ever-quiet form of his female companion, he questioned wryly, "That idiot hasn't done anything too stupid, has he?"

The glow in her eyes deepened, its warmth fueled by his wry question. Things had not changed completely between them... He was as elusive and yet confidential as ever; she, silently hoping, waiting, watching...
Stupid? His simple-minded stumbles never faltered... Her calm acceptance of the stupidity of the father of her children was mixed with slight feelings of remorse... oh, he was not the most intelligent being, but his heart was in the right place. Even if parts of his body, parts of his mind, were not.
"'That idiot'..." those words were transformed by her melodic voice into a silent accusation towards the 'idiot' "... has actually managed to restrain his natural tendencies. He... tries." Somehow, the way she said it made it seem as though trying simply wasn't enough to gain her approval... or her love. For her love had never been his for the taking.
She drew a deep breath to continue...
Connor frowned once more, puzzled yet again by the stallion's cryptic remark.
"Wi' me? What'd I ha' to do wi' it?" He tilted his head to one side, as though peering at Kureno from a different angle would help him to decode the strange remark. "I wasn' even BORN yet, was I?"
His head whipped about so that he could face his mother, the movement throwing him slightly off-balance. "WAS I?"
Her words died.
That sparkling lavender gaze shifted to the form of her curious young son, loosing some of its warmth and light as she struggled to find a proper way to explain the 'conflict' to a foal.
"... No, neither you nor your brothers had yet emerged from your baskets..."
Connor pondered this, then turned to the stallion once more. "So... So... I-We- weren't born yet, but.... but Momma caused a fight? 'Cause of us?" His lips pursed as though he'd had a taste of a sour fruit.
In his furry little mind,'conflicting views' meant fighting.

His ocean blue hues blinked and flickered minutely at the subtle reprimand in Evelyn's voice, resisting the urge to sigh in frustration and something else he couldn't quite place in her defense of the stallion he detested so. It seemed that her loyalties to the idiot were not easily broken- although he found it confusing that he had done anything to earn her loyalty- and it would have been quite admirable, if it didn't irk him so.
He saw her open her mouth to resume speaking, and then abruptly shut it as Connor asked a question that any grown soquili would have been intelligent enough to avoid. Still, he was Bliss' son, and had to have inherited some of the blithering fool's ignorance, so he suppose he couldn't begrudge him that. Still, his back straightened and his eyes wandered to the horizon behind them as the brown colt continued his line of questions.
His level of discomfort at the young foal's inqueries was rising with every syllable that came out of the colt's ignorant mouth, and Kureno could tell in the subtle tensing of her posture that Evelyn felt the same way- if not moreso. He cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably, unsure of how he was supposed to answer, since his mother seemed incapable of doing so.
Was it so hard to comprehend? He had been young once, he knew, but he had always been rather perceptive and intelligent, thanks to his mother. Perhaps this was how innocent children grew up, and didn't have to be faced with the life-altering choices and realities that had been forced upon him at Connor's age.
"No," he finally interjected, struggling for words behind the steely mask that never faltered, although the chaotic thoughts cycling visciously through his mind showed minutely through the deep cerulean hues that met the younger soquili's. "It wasn't because of you, or your mother... Bliss did something that made me... angry. We... disagreed on how life should go on after that, with you and your mother. Eventually... he made a point that your mother agreed on, so I left for a while."
It was the most plausible explanation he could offer while being careful not to insult any member of their small family... despite it being obvious that he wanted to. Kureno was angry at Bliss for far more than just the incident that had led up to their meeting, but that was something he hadn't even come to terms with himself, yet. Besides, Connor didn't need to know everything that went on... he would be happier simply knowing that his parents cared for each other, and were there for him. It was what he knew Eve would want for her son, and for herself.
In all honesty, he couldn't contribute anything to their happiness. The reality of that revelation bothered him in a way that he refused to dwell upon.

Evelyn turned away, her lavender gaze shimmering with tightly-restrained tears.
... That your mother agreed on...
Oh, yes, she had agreed. What was she to do? Tell the simple-minded fool who had managed to get her pregnant that he could have nothing to do with his own foals? How could she do that after what he had told her? He had been left by a mare once before... he had never known his first son... his daughter lay down with any stallion that came her way. How could she, who knew well what it was like to have no-one, break someone's heart because she could not love them?
... unless... unless Bliss' heart was not the only one that had been breaking.
She gasped, the sharp intake of breath punctuated by a slight flare of her delicately-shaped nostrils. Her gaze whipped over her son to land on the form of her oldest friend... the only one to ever have an unquestioning place in her loyal heart.
Kureno had left after she had made her decision. Had he left because he could not stand to face her after being soiled by another stallion, could not bear to watch as her belly swelled with each passing day thanks to the seed in her womb... as she had first thought? Or because he needed time to tend to his own breaking heart?
She watched him, breathless, lavender eyes widened in hopeful fright.
Connor blinked, completely oblivious to his mother's plight.
"Oh."
He was bursting with questions, but somehow a tendril of his mother's perception broke through the wall of ignorance set up by his father and he held his questions at bay.
"So... OH YEAH! D'you wan' me t' do the sunset-seein'-but-not-really-goin' thing... or... not?" He pursed his lips, looking back and forth between the two adults... still not seeing his own mother's tense posture.
She felt as though she would burst.
If only she had known... if only she had seen some sign that her feelings were returned... if at all? No, she could not afford to doubt. Not now, not after so long. Doubt would tear her apart.
If her choice had been between two breaking hearts, that of the father of her children and that of Kureno...
It wouldn't even have been a choice.
Kureno.

His ears folded back briefly at the sound of her gasp, and an almost pained grimace briefly flickered across his expression before he deliberately looked away. So, she had realized... Eve was perceptive like that when it came to him, and it didn't surprise him that she had reached the inevitable conclusion of the truth of why he had left... but in all reality, it wasn't something he had yet come to terms with, himself. In addition, it was obvious that she had her own family to worry about- so where was he to fit into the picture?
He had resigned himself to the role of distant guardian to this young colt, at the very least- it was all he could do, if he were to continue living this way. Feeling Evelyn's disbelieving stare on him, he shifted uncomfortably. He wanted no pity or sympathy- he didn't even want her to know, dammit- but now that she did, there was no mistaking the tension in the air as he stiffened under her eyes. He dismissed his thoughts with a steadily rising level of frustration, lowering his head to meet young Connor's stare instead of the stationary mare who seemed to have had a revelation of her own.
A half-hearted smirk was all he managed towards the young foal's excited question- though he doubted Connor would know the difference- and nudged the smaller colt in the direction of the path that would take them up the cliffsides. "If you promise you won't tell your father, I suppose we could do that. If you tell him, though, you'll get your mother and yourself in trouble." Actually, Kureno had more of a sneaking suspicion that Bliss would try to find and snap at him- but he could not care less what the bumbling fool may try to pull on him. Eve and her son, however... they were another story.
He could sense the swirling vortex of emotions in the mare standing only a few feet away, but Kureno, for once in his life, was at a loss. As much as it tugged on his fiercely guarded heart to glimpse the sheen of tears covering her amethyst gaze, he had to wonder if it was simply her kind heart feeling pity for him, or perhaps something else that he didn't understand. He wasn't comfortable with discussing it, especially not in front of her son, so he simply met her gaze for a brief moment, reining in his own tumultous emotions, and motioned towards the path he had pushed Connor towards, breaking his eyes away a moment later. Shoulders hunched and head down, he started down the path without a word.
As much as she had changed his view on quite a few things, friendship included- Kureno had come to realize that not even Evelyn had the power to sway the fate he had always suspected himself to have. He had always been alone- no father to speak of, and though he loved his mother dearly, and she had protected him when needed, she only distanced herself from him further when he got too close. He had never even known that he had a sister until recently, and no one dared venture close enough to call him a friend, save for Eve. What was he to expect, besides more of the same? His heart had been weakened by the desire for companionship, perhaps even the desire for more... but it only led to hurt, in any scenario.
He would not be weak now, by his own volition, or anyone else's.

Connor grinned happily, trotting forwards with high-spirited sass at the stallion's nudge. "I promise!" he wriggled excitedly, pleased to have been trustworthy enough to carry out his suggestion without mussing it up.
His lean legs carried him up the path rather quickly, leaving just enough space between himself and the two adults so that their words would go unheard by innocent ears.
Had she imagined that brief flicker of emotion in those swirling pools of azure light?
He had met her eyes for the briefest moment, then turned away and plodded quietly after her frolicking son... his posture seeming to concede defeat.
She took a moment to gather her thoughts, suppressing all those that would only complicate matters. Hiding her startled and hopeful expression behind a gauze of ethereal detachment, she started forwards at a sedate pace that covered ground without seeming too hasty.
Evelyn took a step to the side, her hooves falling on the medley of brush and tried timber to the side of the beaten path. Keeping her silent vigil, her gaze downcast and her expression revealing nothing, she increased her pace just enough to draw even with Kureno's shoulder.
In a single graceful movement, her neck arched briefly to bring her cheek closer to his muscular form, her warm breath close enough to tickle his skin. She brought her head downwards in a slow, sensuous caress.
She held the pose for a scant few moments before withdrawing her touch, walking sedately along beside him once more.
Some say that actions speak louder than words. Would Kureno hear her silent plea for understanding?
Connor did a queer little leap, snorting as he landed on the other side of a tumbled log. "Hah!" He continued onwards without sparing the two adults a single backwards glance.

Lost in his own contemplations for a scant few moments, Kureno almost jumped as he felt the warm breath upon his thickly-furred skin, noting the slightly increased pace she struggled to maintain to keep in step with him. Almost unconsciously, the beat of his steps slowed, just enough to ease her efforts.
He wasn't entirely sure what to make of her silent display of affection at first, wondering briefly if it was some sort of message or admission- but it seemed more like an apology, or a truce offering. Did she think he was mad at her? He supposed his lack of emotion could be mistaken for a multitude of things, but he would have a hard time remaining angry with her for anything... much less any decision that would make her happy.
Slowly, quietly, an ebony-feathered wing unfolded to drape over her side as it had once done so long ago- its touch light and barely there, but present none the less. He understood that, if nothing else, she wanted him as a friend, and he desired the same. Their friendship was something that he treasured, whether or not he would admit it, and not something that he was willing to give up for the sake of misunderstandings.
Connor's outburst spurred him to withdraw the gentle weight of his wing after a moment, the tips of his feathers grazing her dappled side before they folded back against his own side. Oceanic blue hues returned to their stoic gaze towards the setting sun, noting that they were nearing the top of the summit, where he did much of his own cloud-watching.

A subdued smile graced her delicate lips, the subtlest trace of warmth and affection shining in her lavender eyes. She would have been quite content to walk alongside him like this until all traces of life faded from this universe forevermore... alas, she could not. Eventually, they must stop and rest... but what sustenance could be more gratifying than the presence of a dear friend?
Connor breached the top of the summit with a little squeal of delight, pleased to have gotten there first. "Yay- Yay- Yay- SUNSET!" He trotted about in a hyper little circle, then remembered what he had promised to do.
"OH! Right." He wheeled about, peeking over the summit at the two adults trailing leisurely along behind him. "I'mma go play over there, 'kay?" With that, he raced off behind a large boulder and peeked about for something to amuse himself with.
Evelyn's ears flickered in the barest hint of recognition at her son's words.
When that hesitant ebony-feathered wing touched upon her side, she could not have been happier.
When that hesitant ebony-feathered wing was withdrawn, the happiness remained.
As they, too, breached the summit, she broke the companionable silence with a whispered question.
"You, too?"

Kureno's own ears flickered to the side in acknowledgement of the hyperactive colt's declaration, offering a slight nod of ascent as he raced off to play who knows what, though he was sure Connor hadn't even looked back.
A glimmer of something warm settled in him as he felt the tangible air of happiness surround his only female friend, though there were no outward signs of his own contentment- he was sure she could tell anyway, as she seemed to be an expert at reading him like that. It was part of the reason that they were so compatible, and the understanding between them went so deep.
His gaze lifted to watch the sunset as they reached the outcropping of stones overlooking the small forest below, heaving an almost inaudible sigh as his aching wings stretched out a bit, then resettled at his sides. Her near-silent question made him pause, briefly stiffening as he realized her meaning, then his eyes widened in surprise at what the posing of the question revealed. She... felt that for him? Then why had she... he refused to ponder that at this moment.
A quiet lowering of his head was his only answer, gaze flitting to meet her eyes before they returned to the orange-lit horizon. He hoped she could understand his meaning as well as she usually did- he was unable to say the words, even if it wasn't a direct admission. There was a possibility he would never be able to say them, but she had never expected anything of him before, and he hoped that this was no different.
The answer was positive, in any case... and he hoped she could understand the underlying meaning behind his vague response.
