If you are in North/South America, Europe, or Africa, on Wednesday, Feb 20th night / Thursday Feb 21st morning, you can watch a total lunar eclipse.

Quote:
A Lunar Eclipse takes place at a Full Moon when the Moon moves into the shadow of the Earth cast by the Sun. This takes place at the same instant for all observers, but the LOCAL time on the clock depends on your time zone!

In North America (Canada & the US), the Total Eclipse takes place during:

Newfoundland ~ 11:30 p.m. - 12:21 a.m.
Atlantic ~ 11:00 - 11:51 p.m.
Eastern ~ 10:00 - 10:51 p.m.
Central ~ 9:00 - 9:51 p.m.
Mountain ~ 8:00 - 8:51 p.m.
Pacific ~ 7:00 - 7:51 p.m.

If you're elsewhere, it is taking place at 3:00 a.m. - 3:51 a.m GMT/UTC
Calculate from there.

so does the moon move in front of the sun? Or behind the sun?

Neither.

Sun -> Earth -> Moon.

Direct line. Thus, the moon is in Earth's shadow.

&that makes it safe to look at directly.

It will start right when I get off work tonight. I'll see it on the way home.

i might be having a really dumb moment here >.< but how does that make it a total lunar eclipse? Doesnt that just make it night on one side of the world, and day on the other? And isnt the moon always safe to look at directly? xp

Always safe to look at the moon directly. Just, Solar eclipses are all "OMG DON'T LOOK!" so.. clarifying that it's not the bad type of eclipse.

It's a total lunar eclipse because it's a direct line. Usually the moon is off to one side or the other, and not on the exact opposite side of Earth from the Sun.
The phases of the moon are all, in a way, eclipses. They just occur over 28 days instead of an hour.

Aww ;__;

It wasn't a total eclipse, anyway -__- there was a tiny sliver of moon left and then it started shifting and getting bigger. Froze my butt for an hour just for that.

I didn't hear about it until too late. And it was cloudy anyway.

But I saw one 2 or 3 years ago. Yayness.
