Background And History

Welcome to the Northwest Library.

Topic: Union City

Union City is the only city on the hostile world of Klertis. It is divided into 5 sections, each of almost equal size with physical borders. 4 districts are controlled by a governor and 1 neutral territory.

The odd part is the city's design. 4 sectors ring the central one, divided in compass points. The center is actually walled off from the rest of the city and knows nothing about what goes on. Moreover, the center has no knowledge of the use or training of magic, and nobody is allowed in or out. It is also an island surrounded by water, with no bridges in or out. it is entirely self sustaining. the sky above the city is held back by a dome, and always appears to be a sunny blue. inside the dome, weather is controlled, and precipitation in each area is controlled by it's ruler. there is no way outside the dome, but outside there is nothing but dust and rocks. the central area has a fake sky, and is completely unable to be seen by the other sectors. the people inside are led to believe that they are the only inhabitants on the only land in the world. this is odd, as no sector can contact them, which leaves the question of who planted this idea.

Only a few signs point to the builders, but Jad of West Sector seems to have observed the city's construction thousands of years ago. The buildings of the city were built by the inhabitants, and are often demolished and rebuilt. The architecture ranges from the high-tech look of West sector, the sweeping curves and graceful spires of north sector, the New-York style of central sector, the shantytowns and bleak fortresses of east sector, to the Gothic and wicked spires of south sector.

Magic exists in Union city, but the only educational facilities are in the south and northwest areas. The advanced technology is focused in the west and east, as technology is often shunned for magic or vice versa. The only users of magic in the central area are the Defenders of Justice, a group of young mysterious girls with magical powers who fight monsters that are escaped(?) experiments from the south and east sectors.

In each sector there are gangs. often they are groups of youths rebelling against their sector. Each area has different ways of dealing with them. the gangs tend not to fight each other, because a gang war is too obvious to the governments. they often bully or experiment on civilians in the north and west, and in the south and east, help people stand against their oppressors.

Currently the outer areas fight each other, but the center is experiencing problems too. The Defenders of Justice, in a test to take the fight to the monsters, teleported into the south sector, which they believe is another planet. they were captured and sent into the east's gladiatorial arena. luckily they escaped back to their home, but what will happen is a mystery...
