Today is the day. Today is the day! Not a moment too soon either. For most of the snow had just started to melt, reveling the soft grass underneath.

It seemed like only days before when November told Spotty they would be parents. Now it was time. Soon he would be a dad and November would be a mother. Waiting was the worst part. Spotty was so nervous that he didn't know what to do with himself. Atleast he didn't have to wait too long. Soon, there were two baskets.

The baskets were called for Spotty to see them, but he needed to see how November was doing. Hopefully, she was alright. "November look!" he started, obviously excited, "But are you alright?"

November had waited anxiously for this day, both excited and terrified. That morning, when the first pains had come, she hadn't known what to do. She had gone to Spotty immediately with the news. Later that afternoon, she had struggled through her labor, each second more agonizingly painful than the last. Now there were two baskets, each containing a foal. The lives that she had borne for so many weeks were now out in the world. November had tears in her eyes as she nuzzled her babies for the first time.

When Spotty came in to see her, she was exhausted. "They're so beautiful, Spotty dear." she said, her voice a bit weak. She smiled at him. "I'll be fine, I'm just a bit tired."

Spotty laid down next to November and tried to comfort her. He knew that being in labor had worn her out, pain like that would make anyone tired. "Just rest and relax then," Spotty said quietly, "Don't worry, I'll be here to watch you and the baskets."

He looked at the two baskets more closely now. They were a perfect mix of Spotty and November. But one appeared to be more like the other. One was mostly brown, like November and one was spotted, like the stallion. Spotty smiled, it was interesting to see how their colors mixed together. "They're so wonderful."

November nuzzled Spotty tiredly. "I'm glad you're here..." she said softly. She felt safe with Spotty there to watch her. "They're so innocent...I hope we can give them the best life possible." She was oh, so tired, though. She lay her head on Spotty's back, and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of her baskets.

"We will give them the best life possible." Spotty smiled softly as he watched November drift off to sleep. He would make sure not to disturb her, so the mare could get plenty of rest. The morning had been long for her and for Spotty. Once he made sure she was asleep, Spotty closed his own eyes. After a short rest, he would be ready to check the baskets out better.

After a long rest, November woke up, her first thoughts turning to the safety of her babies. They lay beside her, perfectly safe and warm. Breathing a sigh of relief, she nuzzled them gently, not wanting to wake the sleeping foals inside. She wasn't used to being a mom, and she didn't want to let her baskets out of her sight. November yawned, stretching out a bit. She was still sore, but she wasn't so tired anymore, which was a very good thing.

Feeling movement, Spotty slowly opened his eyes. The stallion hadn't even realized that he had fallen asleep. But now he felt refreshed and relaxed. Looking over, he saw that November was awake as well. She was looking over the baskets, Spotty could already tell that she was going to make an excellent mother. "Did you have a good rest?" he asked, moving closer to the baskets. They were both very different from each other.

November smiled at Spotty, leaning over to nuzzle him. "I had a very excellent, much needed rest. Did you sleep well?" November asked, her voice lowered so she wouldn't wake the babies. November, though afraid of the challenges that would come in the future, knew that she would do her best to raise the children in a way that would enable them to survive out in the world. From the moment she nuzzled them for the first time, she felt the heavy weight of responsibility on her shoulders and knew that she would have to be equal to it.

"Yep," he answered, letting out one last yawn, "I feel energized and ready to care for these baskets."

The stallion was no longer nervous, even though the baskets had just arrived. Deep down he knew there was nothing to be worried about. You don't need experience to be a good parent. Spotty realized that the ability was always in you, lying in wait until it's time.

"I wonder if they'll be girls, or boys, or one of each," he said outloud as he looked over the two baskets. It would be exciting to watch over them until the time came for the babies to come out.

November laughed softly. "You know, they're going to be a handful. But I have a feeling that it won't be too tough...after all, they say that love has a way of canceling out hard feelings."

November looked at him, proud to have such a compassionate Soquili as her mate. He was going to be a wonderful father, she could tell in the way he looked so lovingly at the baskets. She realized that both of them would give their lives for their babies, and she knew that even if they made mistakes, their love for their babies would lead them to become good parents.

"Hmm, I don't know. I suppose we'll just have to be surprised." she said, smiling. She looked forward to the day when the babies would emerge from their baskets and take their places in the world.

Spotty couldn't help but laugh with November. "I bet they will be fiesty little ones," he agreed. He thought of how he couldn't wait for the babies to come. But when they did come, he would probably miss the time when they were just quiet baskets.

"But I know we'll be able to handle 'em," Spotty said confidently. He had never really met any colts or fillies, but figured they couldn't be all that hard to control.

As much as November wanted the babies to be strong enough to come out of their baskets, she wondered if she would miss having the babies this small. They were helpless, but they had all the food and such that they needed in the basket. The only task that she and Spotty had was to keep them safe.

"I'm certain that we'll be able to handle them, Spotty dear." She said, her voice confident as well. "But we can't be too harsh, because then they'll feel estranged, but then we can't be too gentle, because then they'll take advantage of us...Oh, this is such a big responsibility." November said, her eyebrows furrowed in thought. "I know we'll do fine, though. I'm probably worrying too much." she said, chuckling softly.

The two would have to make some tough choices as parents. They would need to learn the right way to do everything; so they wouldn't be too overprotective or not protective enough. He could see that November seemed nervous about what they would have to face. "Don't worry November," he reasured her, "We're a bit unsure now, but we'll know how to handle them when the time comes." He wanted her to relax while they were still baskets. He had a feeling that they would be busy once the babies came out.

November smiled at Spotty, grateful that he was trying to reassure her. "I suppose we can worry about the problems when they arise." She knew that she would always worry about her children, but she knew that she had to not worry so much, or she'd become paranoid. November snuggled up next to Spotty's side, enjoying his presence. "Spotty, I still can't believe that we're parents! That I'm...I'm a mother..."

"Me neither!" the stallion agreed, "We've had these baskets for days and I still can't believe it." Spotty couldn't believe he was already going to be a father. A father! He couldn't help but smile at the thought of all the things that would come from being a father. Playing games with the children, telling stories, exploring with them...
"And I'm a father!" he said excitedly.
