Slowly, Mahavir began a climb jump a large, grassy hill. All around him the wind blew in powerful gushes while the tall grass moved in frenzies against it's strength. More than once, Mahavir would have to steady himself after a fierce blow. His mane and tail were tangled up and knotted with a few small twigs or blades of grass.

As he neared the top of the massive hill, Mahavir was forced to squint his eyes under the glaring light of the sun. From the top of this hill it seemed that the whole valley was centered around this one point. Mahavir couldn't help but marvel at it's greatness; the other side of the hill, unlike the side he had climbed, dropped off hundreds of feet into the lands below.

While Mahavir stood at the top, the sun beamed down on him; casting a great shadow into the grass behind him and lit up his maroon hair.

Calantha galloped through the valley, ignoring the winds that threatened to carry her up into the air. It was bad weather for flying, even for one as experienced as her, one wrong gust could throw her off course and hurl her towards the ground. So as much as she longed to be up in the clear blue sky, she kept her hooves on the ground. Squinting against the blinding wind and sun, she searched for anything interesting, in a seemingly empty valley. She slowed to a trot, wings tucked close as the wind pulled at her feathers, as if trying to get her into the air, it was only when she looked up that she saw the brown stallion, contrasting against the green grass. So there was someone out after all. As much as she wanted to fly, she instead cantered towards him, and started up the hill.

While Mahavir's eyes squinted against the blinding sun, the wind died down for just a moment. In that moment, he was able to hear a rustling in the grass that was definitely not the wind. Instead of the sweeping sound created by the wind, this new sound was a crunching one.

As Mahavir turned around, the wind picked up again and tossed all his hair crazily around his face. But since the sun was to his back he was still able to see in front of him. Standing there was another horse; a mare. As his outgoing personality got the best of him, Mahavir shouted over the roaring wind, "Hey! What brought you out on a day like this?"

She could barely hear him over the rush of the wind, ears flicked forward towards him trying to hear him better, but only got the rush of the wind. But she still managed to hear enough to get the general meaning of it. With a gentle flick of her wings, she launched herself up the hill, careful to not let the wind carry her away, before landing closer to him, sliding as she stopped. "Just trying to not be carried away on the wind." She said louder than she usually would, because even at this distance it was still hard to hear even yourself speak.

Mahavir was thankful that it seemed the mare had been able to hear him. Even Mahavir struggled to hear his own words over the wind. As she slowly made her way closer, Mahavir heard her yell an answer over the wind. Luckily she was close enough where Mahavir got every word she said.

"That must be tough to do with those wings." Mahavir yelled. He felt rude for yelling at a mare, even if it was only to be louder than the wind.

"It can be, but thankfully there are only a few days each year that are this windy. If I keep them close to me, then the wind can't get under and carry me away." She said, her wings as flat against her sides as she could make them, but still her feathers were blown every which way, many coming loose and blowing away. "So what is your name?" She asked, half-shouting against the wind.

Mahavir nodded as he watched the mare's feathers as they were blown around on her wings. "Oh, I'm Mahavir." He answered, feeling silly to have forgotten to mention his name.

"What's yours?" He called over the wind. Mahavir was considering asking the mare if she wanted to go somewhere a little lower if the wind didn't let up. Further down the hill would be blocking the majority of the harsh winds.

"I am Calantha." She said as she steadily made her way closer to him. "I think we could talk better if we get this hill between us and the wind, and perhaps I won't loose all my feathers today." She said as she continued forward towards the other side of the hill, where it would block most of the wind.
