Quick scribbles at night. I threw an old napkin around his waist for the virgin eyes, though there are no genitals shown.

No napkin on waist

No posture study. No stick figure. No reference. Just outta my head right away. I need to know what anatomical issues are most annoying please. smile

Oh and, don't feel sad for him. He's a criminal doing a hard labor sentence for the rest of his life in jail. He killed four patrol members he found trying to rape his daughter while they were on duty. The officers were honored and their families were made up for.

The most outstanding anatomical issue is how short you've made his thigh.
Also, you need to stress tension of pulling that cart. His front foot needs to be more planted. Right now it looks more like he's posing.

Do you think it should be longer, at that angle?

The foot thing, I think, expresses some tension. I want to convey a very strong man (he killed four with his bare hands) who doesn't need that much tension pulling an iron card. There is some tension at his toes, though. Perhaps both the calf and thigh could use more tension?

Especially at that angle, his thigh should be longer.
And what I mean about the foot is that it looks like it is just barely touching the ground, like he isn't putting weight on that foot.

Okay about the thigh. Not too much longer, I hope. Did you check the non-napkin one? His thigh actually looks much shorter with "clothes" on. oo;

Actually, his foot was initially planted on the floor, but I just wasn't pleased with it. ^^;

Urrm.. is the thigh all? I wanted to ask about knee-drawing observations... and elbows. I can't look at refs as a self-imposed principle so what do you think when you draw them joints? Any particular patterns of thoughts that always come up when drawing knees and elbows?

I think my teachers would have laughed me out of the room if I refused to use reference. Then they would have slashed my grade for the class.

Remember that the thigh bone is longer than the shin bone. You have the ratios reversed in this drawing.

For knees... look at some reference man. I swear to god. You HAVE to.
Look at your OWN knee. Look at how the tendons attach to the knee cap. Try and capture that.

Ahhh I sooo saw that coming at me. XD
But you didn't mention anything about the knee in this image. Does it not look that bad?

Thanks a lot. I'll try to look for some anatomical/autopsy joints images. =3

I guess I have just failed your class. razz

The knee looks fine.
Seriously.

Imo the image would have more impact if the arm pulling the cart were the one closer to us, so we could see the muscles taut and straining. Also, his body could be angled more to show the tension? He looks like he should be walking his terrier, not doing hard labor.

His expression looks a bit too content for the situation as well. And more like an old woman than a man. Maybe it should be a bit more masculine and contorted?

If you refuse to use reference, you'd better be prepared to get s**t for it. That's all I'm sayin'.

The way his legs are makes sense if he's putting significant effort into pulling the cart, but the way his feet interact with the ground should reflect that better

Of course, I'm not saying I have never used reference images before, or that I'm against the idea. Everything we know has come from a previous observation, so sure! All I'm saying is, for me, a hobbyist, drawing is more about the process than about the final product. I enjoy trying to figure out what to do while drawing. A kind of challenge that I do for myself is that, whenever I start drawing something, I don't look at refs until I'm done. No matter how awful it will be, the mistakes I make remain as lessons for next time. The anatomy and ref images, I only use those when I'm not drawing to stack up knowledge about the figure. Just like now, you have told me that the thigh bone is longer than the shin bone. It goes straight into the record and it will help me notice that the next time I look at an image.

In this drawing, I did not even draw a stick figure. I was trying to see how familiar I am with figures as I have not drawn anything in way too long, and there seems to be a little space of time coming for me that will probably allow me to draw again. It seems like I have been observing torsos too much.

@reapersun, of course I agree to all you're saying, but with all due respect, that would be a different image. And yes, he is content. His daughter's fine, what else does he need?

@Tohomito, amen to what you're saying. I shouldn't have changed the foot. e_e

How is forcing yourself to do something wrong and then having to re-learn it helping you?
I understand like wanting to do something to find out what your weaknesses are, but whats the point of creating something thats full of flaws just so you can have this peice thats full of flaws?
wouldnt it be easier to when you get to a part where you're having trouble, look for some sort of guidance?

idk different people work differently but it seems counterproductive for me.
then instead of having a learning experience and a shitty picture, you'll both learn and produce something nice.

This piece lacks emotional impact. I look at it and nothing is implied to me.

That's why I stated I'm not interested in production. It works for me. e_e I fill my life with other things.

It's cold. And does the term quick scribbles ring a bell?
