At this past weekend's Otakon convention, AD Vision revealed plans to release "Ghost Stories" (Gakkou no Kaiden) with a near totally improvised, "Americanized" English dub that is, "raunchier and hipper than the original." ICv2 News writes, "This is the first time such wholesale re-crafting of a series has been undertaken as a new artistic work... If successful, it may engender a new art form, with anime visuals and new scripts."

As most of you know, I'm a moderate when it comes editing in anime. I don't mind cutting out blood, nudity or inapporite language so a series can be geared for the same age that is was in Japan, but I do have a serious problem with massive rewrites. They are changing a serious drama to a low-brow comedy. If a company is going to make such major changes, I think they should just make their own show.

This leaves a bad taste in my mouth.... are we regressing, now? I thought the days of taking an anime and trying to turn it into a different show entirely were behind us. confused

You know what was a good idea? Volcano High. You know what's a terrible idea? This.

Hey, Battle of the Planets may have spliced in a whole new characters and American produced episodes were used to cover plot holes made by skipping explicit arcs, but Gatchaman was always and action show, it's not like Battle of the Planets was turning it into a love-story.

It's certainly not the "first time such wholesale re-crafting" has taken place, it's just the first time they had the nerve to call it art.

Isn't it funny how the minute Naruto was licensed there was a thousand people saying how badly it was going to suck, but this goes right under their nose?

Volcano High was bitchin'.

Don't forget Carl Maceck's Robotech series. That was spliced too.

They just spliced three shows together, they didn't splice in a whole new American character to make it more like Star Wars. You see, back then that was the goal. Make anime as much like Star Wars as possible. At least then they did it for marketing reasons. There are plenty of fans today that would watch Ghost Stories as a drama.

Does Volcano High relate to this in a way I don't know about?

Volcano High was dubbed and used the voices of popular Rap/Hip Hop artists that have been shown on MTV.

I liked it, but I'm not sure if others did.

It was hit or miss with the voices. Andre 3000 and Method Man were really good, LiL John was inconsistant, but overall it was entertaining and I honestly liked the dub better than the original. Without the dubbing the terrible acting just grated on me way too much. Especially how the main character seemed dazed all the time. Andre made it seem somehow more plausible or less distracting maybe.
