Almost every director does it differently, so I'm curious - what's your jazz band setup? How many people per part, per instrument, etc. Do you have auditions, or can any Tom, d**k, or Harry walk in and join?
My old jazz band followed the traditional setup, because jazz is a big deal around here and generally if you don't have a standard jazz band people don't take you as seriously. (Much bigger than, say, marching; there are only a couple marching bands in the area.) Standard setup is five saxes (two altos, two tenors, and a bari), up to five trombones, up to five trumpets, and a rhythm section (drumset, bass, guitar, piano). We've been known to have people doubling on parts from time to time just because my band director didn't want to cut them if they had a lot of talent/potential, but when we perform in public (read: in front of people other than our parents) the doublers switch in and out, which is fairly acceptable practice. This normally isn't a problem with trumpets or trombones - it's generally saxes and rhythm with too many people. (I think this year they have 8 saxes and two each of all the rhythm except for guitar - one of the sax players is doubling on guitar.)
If you don't play any of those instruments, well, too bad, start learning. XD We don't have any flute players, clarinet players, tuba players, etc unless they double because there generally aren't any parts for them. A lot of the jazz band doubles.

We follow the basic set-up I guess...sort of. We have more altos than we need.... We have three altos, two tenors, and a bari, four trombones, four trumpets(maybe five), two set players, one bass, one guitar...one keyboard, and one gen. percussionist.
Um...and usually anyone can join, but if there's too many, our director's threatened auditions. Luckily for me, I was needed...cos no one wants to play tenor.
I wonder if every jazz band sets the front row up (left-right) tenor 1, alto 1, alto 2, tenor 2, bari. The ones I've seen all do...but last year when we weren't competing I sat next to our other tenor. . . (second part's nice!)

Well, we had to audition because we had a bazillion saxes wanting to be in Jazz B this year, and you definitely have to audtion to be in our super awesome A Jazz band. :]
We as the B band have a sax section (2 tenors, 3 altos, and a bari), a bone section (3 bass bones and 4 normal bones), a trumpet section (5), a rhythm section (3 percussionists, a pianist, and a bass), and the "icing on the cake" section (a flute, a violin, and a vibes player). The tenors play clarinet or bass clarinet from time to time.
The A band is a bit different. They have a tuba/bass bone, four regular bones, five trumpets, one percussionist, one vibes player, one guitar, one pianist, and I'm not sure how many saxes, but I think it's 2 tenors, 2 or 3 altos, and one bari.

Well the jazzband i'm currently in isnt affiliated with any schools. Our director is our old highschool director and doesnt teach at the moment because he's going for his PHD. We pretty much let anybody play who wants to play but we dont have any flutes or clarinets unless you count doubling. We're pretty much a group of friends. Standard band too two alto's two tenors one bari. Four to five trombones and four to five trumpets. Rhythm section is drum bass keyboards. We have a guitar player but he sucks a** and isnt much of a jazz player, plus he hasnt even performed with us. Sometimes we'll have an aux player come in with congas and stuff but he hasnt showed up recently.
Back in college and highschool we had pretty much the same kind of band cept we had auditions and it was hard to get in. In highschool i didnt make my first audition but wormed my way in because the Tenor player was doing basketball <_<
We were a festival band and we competed so we had to have a standard setup. First tenor on the far right then second alto then lead alto then second tenor then bari player. Trombones had the second player on the far right then the lead player then third fourth and bass or whatever the part said. Trumpets the same the lead player was in the middle. Our rhythm section was standard drums, bass(electric and upright) guitar and keyboards. We even dragged a Fender Rhodes around to festivals and performances. We also had a percussion player that did mostly congas and hand percussion.
We played quite a bit of all sorts of jazz and even did some for festivals which the judges apparently didnt like because we werent swinging... Our teacher liked to mix things and we had quite a diverse book with different types of jazz in it. The highschool and even middleschool jazzbands in my city are really good and they travel around the country and the world performing and doing festivals and winning sweeps at them. I live in a city with a very rich jazz history and the school arr trying to withhold that tradition. ^_^

We use the same standard setup as you, it sounds like. In fact I'm almost positive we did. I know for a fact the saxophones were the same.

Mountlake Terrace is our rival school. I've been to Hot Java, Cool Jazz so I've heard all four bands, and I always see Garfield, Roosevelt, and Terrace at Lionel Hampton.
And you went to Franklin? That's awesome. My friend's mom used to teach at Franklin (maybe she still does, I'm not sure) and my old elementary school teacher's daughter went there.

i dont do very much much jazz, but over the summer i played in a small jazz band for a little while... we had to audition, and we were split into 2 bands, a really good one and a not so good one. we had 1 bass guitar, 7 trombones, about 10 trumpets, 13 saxophones, a piano, lots of percussionh, and two of the trombones were actually tubaists, so they switched over to tuba for one of the songs. that was in the upper band.. the lower band had too manny people to count. i dont really know much about jazz, so i dont know if that was okay instrumentation for a jazz band. we mustve been okay though, cuz they let us play a concert for all of th county supervisors and those type people.

Well, our music program is sooo small we don't turn anyone down.
We usually have 3 trumpets, 3 alto sax, 1 tenor sax, 1 bari sax, 2 trombones, 2 drummers, 1 piano, and occasionally one electric bass.
I play trumpet one and lead trumpet, and it is usually one per part. Except altos, 2 on first and 1 on second

My director is really picky. We are the best Jazz band In the state (Borah high represent! yeah, the state is Idaho) because of what he does, and thats why I voted for him for best teacher of the year award or something but anyways, the setup.
We have 5 trumpets, me included, but he makes someone sit out every other time so there are only 4 trumpets playing. Also we have 5 trombones and he makes 2 sit out every other song or whatever. we have a bass trombone, 2 bass players but they alternate every song of course, and two drummers who alternate too... too pianists that also alternate and one of the pianists plays flute when she isnt playing piano. The other guy is amazing. National merit scholar but anyways, thats our setup. Oh yeah, saxophones. they suck, but we have a couple. I dont really count. 1 bari. yeah thats all i care about.

We follow the standard, except we want 4 trumpets and 4 trombones. However, we have only 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, and 1 tenor, then enough of everything else. It's quite sad.
