The rush of the Swift Open River had always been soothing to the dark feathered sentinel. The breeze that came off of the water was alluring, just as the the sounds of the water were.
Of course, she feared plummeting into that water and drownding, but it wasn't a thought that often crossed her mind.
"What about an alcyon? We could have fresh fish whenever we want." The gatherer clacked her dark beak and turned an eye upon the little gray form that sat beside her.
Auze pulled an odd look on his little rodent face. "'N ris' tha' wicked beak? I dun' think so, Twil. Y'los'y'mind?" The mus stood and paced along the boughs of the old willow that grasped out towards the waters.
This was the place that Twilla and Auze called home. It was still in Deep Woods, but just. It was here that Deep Woods ended, for just across this open water was a new territory for the gatherer. She preferred to stay in Deep Woods, but she often wondered what it was like across that open water.
"But... Fresh fiiiiiiish. Besides, I get to decide if we have an alcyon one day or not. Complain all you want. If I want one, I'll get one. It wouldn't eat you, I promise."

Jester was sleeping, back to the world. He had been up all night practicing his....new song. He wasn't sure where the muse came from but he did enjoy it when it visited. Grumbling slightly he turned around to face the bright light of day, squinting to see a blurry form a few leagues ahead of him.
He couldn't make it out, but it looked vaguely like food. Blinking a bit in vain attempts to bring the world back into focus from sleep. He leaned forward out of his tall pine tree, gliding down towards the small grey Mus shaped blur, feet first.

Auze did not hear the silent wings of the bard and plodded on his way.
Twilla, however, saw the blur headed after her little gray companion. She really did need to get him painted or something.
"AUZE, WATCH OUT!" She called out loudly, hoping that the fast approaching sentinel would hesitate and stop at her calling. She didn't take a good look at him, for if she had she would of realized that it was her friend, Jester.

The shout snapped Jester out of his dive and his sleepy haze. The jolt caused him to splay his tail feathers in such a way that he dropped nearly straight down towards the tangled roots off the willow tree. Some how he came to his senses in time and careened into the lower most branches instead of toppling to the ground.
Landing unceremoniously on his rear with a thud in the middle a 3 forked branch. "OOF!" he grunted as he watched the tiny parus flutter in front of his green eyes.

Auze was visibly shaking and darted back to Twilla. He disappeared beneath her feathers and two toed feet.
The shadow sentinel peered down towards the branch wehre Jester had landed rather ungracefully.
"Jester, is that you? Are you alright?" There was a tint of worry to her voice as she lifted off of her branch with ease and flew silently to land near him. The mus had scrambled up her back and was hiding between her shoulderblades.

"Afternoon Twilla." Jester croaked out as he struggled to unwedge his backside from the tree. "I apologize Auze, I didn't mean to frighten you like that...I was, still very much asleep." Jester yawned out the apology.
After a few moments he managed to heave himself from the fork in the tree, minus a few feathers. Doing a quick once over preening to asses the minimal damage. Then turned his perch to face the dark Sentinel that had addressed him, with a grin.

Twilla resisted the urge to hop nearer and asses the damage herself, she didn't want to come off as overbearing or rude. Just about all sentinels valued their personal space and she wasn't about to intrude, but she was clearly still worried. "Sure you're alright? No need to see a medic?"
Auze poked his gray little head out from behind Twilla. "'Ah'pl'gy accepted." The mus muttered. His voice was very quiet. He was still shaking, but growing bolder. He dropped off of Twilla's back and plodded out across the branch. He stopped on his haunches and began to groom his whiskers anxiously.

Giving Twilla a grin, then preening once more to make doubly sure his feathers were all in place. Turning a bit and splaying his tail feathers out, "Do they look ok? I can't tell from this angle." He asked Twilla.
He was embarrassed firstly that he ran into a tree in front of her. Then secondly that he now needed to ask her to take a closer look at his tail. He sighted, and grinned slightly as Auze groomed himself. "I thank you Auze, I was worried I scared you badly." Jester couldn't help but watch the little Mus clean his whiskers with such great care.

"A little ruffled, but otherwise they are fine. Nothing broken." She told him, then glanced at her companion, who was still focused on the calming habit of grooming. She sympathized with her bard friend, he must of felt at least a little embarrassed.
"It's not the first time he's had a close call. That's another point about getting an alcyon, Auze. We could train it to keep an eye out for you."

With a sigh of relief Jester readjusted his tail feathers. And quickly turned to face Twilla. "I didn't frighten you did I. See I was up all night practicing and I was just so tired-" Jester was rambling.
He wasn't embarrassed about falling, hes done that before even worse. It was that the female had seen him fall. And that he had mistaken her Mus for food. He could feel a slight blush creeping back across his face.

She puffed up her chest proudly and gave the embarrassed bard a wink. "Frightened? I should hope not! It takes more than that to frighten me. Auze and I work on the floor, remember? We're tough 'ole gatherers." She was bluffing, of course, he had startled her, but she didn't want him to feel bad about it.

Jester shuddered a bit, remembering what Twilla's job was. The floor, although interesting, not a place he'd like to frequent. He was slightly relieved that nothing he could do could truly scare the female.
"So what brings you and Auze out this way today Twilla?" Jester asked as he settled into his new perch some. The willow tree always seemed to sway to and fro slightly, but it created a soothing rocking motion, not enough to toss a Sentinel from his perch.

"This is where we live." Twilla chuckled quietly. She could feel her heart slowing to it's regular pace as she and her friend spoke. She loved the willow and the rocking was always comforting. "Lovely, isn't it? What with being near the water?" She sighed quietly and relaxed her feathers.
There was so much on her tongue that she wished to discuss with him, but she opted for only one at the time. Blunt and open as she usually is, she found it odd that speaking with him made her somewhat nervous. She never cared about others judging her before. "I think I will get my feathers dyed... Blue, like my eyes, on my wing tips. She spread her wings to indicate the places and grinned. "What d'you think, Jest?"

Jester enjoyed the soothing rocking of the Willow tree, and it was the sound of the water that had attracted him to the large pine tree in the first place. Jester smiled a quiet smile, "Yes, it is lovely." he spoke softly, as the moment demanded it. Blinking, "You live here?!" Jester had not realized the close proximity of her home to his.
Then with a grin, Jester turned to look at Twilla a bit more. Watching her carefully spread her wings, he couldn't help but blush a bit. "Oh blue...." Jester whispered wistfully, remembering the color of the female Sentinels eyes. "I think that would be beautiful on you." Jester didn't even realize the words rolling out of his beak.
After a beat or two of gazing at Twilla's outspread wings, he realized he was staring and flushed even more, turning away a bit. "Erm..will you be getting them dyed soon? I was thinking of getting bells, but I worry I'd trip of them constantly. I really think I would." Jester was babbling, yet not embarrassed that he looked.

"Very soon." She tucked her wings and gave him a wry, friendly wink.
"Bells, you say?" She tilted her head slightly, as if to think it over. "Well, you are a bard. Almost every bard I've ever met has bells... Or noisemakers of some sort. You could use them to keep beat when you sing! They'd be most helpful. They might feel funny at first, but I think you'd get used to them."
