What does the pentacle mean to you? Why use it or wear it as a symbol? Many people automatically associate the Pentacle with witchcraft and Wicca, but why? What does it mean to you as a witch/pagan?

It's a symbol I feel power from, I'm not sure why. What makes it so special?
Maybe it's the Law of Fives wink
To me it's the energies of the world. The elements. I wear one occasionally, but not often.

One thing it means for me is the unity of all the elements. However it also represents the 5 fold God and Goddess. How they are separate but united at the same time. It's interesting how this fits some what into Trad Witchcraft and the like.

I recommend taking a minute to reflect on the difference between a pentacle and a pentagram. My medicine wheel could be taken as a pentacle, for instance.

A pentacle is a type of religious icon that is not just a five-pointed star. The Seal of Solomon is a pentacle. In the same respect, a medicine wheel could be considered a pentacle, although most people wouldn't.

'Penta' by its root refers to something relating to five, so I don't understand how that would work... confused

Extending words like that to encompass other similar symbols of power becomes silly when they are not accurate representations of the shape. Penta = five. Several dictionaries extend the word, but personally I disapprove.

wikipedia The Oxford English Dictionary also offers an alternative possible derivation from the Middle French word pentacol (132 cool or pendacol (141 cool , a jewel or ornament worn around the neck (from pend- hang, Ã to, col or cou neck). I'm not citing Wikipedia as the source here, I'm citing the Oxford English Dictionary, which I hold the highest authority on the English language. You may feel free to disagree with me on this, it won't bother me. I personally don't see the point in using "pentacle" to mean "pentagram" when "pentagram" already means "pentagram." The word "pentacle" becomes much more useful when it has it's own distinct meanings and uses.

I define pentacle as a star with a circle around it used for many different purposes. Or Any symbol that contains all "5" Elements.

I consider a pentacle to be a representation of the five elements, together forming balance. I also see it as humankind's connection with the elements and deity. To me, it is a very sacred symbol; I wear my pentacle almost every day.

It's interesting how I keep seeing a pentacle when I close my eyes. I can't always understand it, or why I wear one. Hell I have on tattooed on my left shoulder. Regardless it is a powerful symbol, and one that I wear proudly.

In the Reclaiming Tradition, the pentacle is associate with the circle of life. Each point on the star corresponds to a different point in the cycle. Right now I can't actually think of the exact terms that are used, but it equates to Birth, Growing/Learning, Adulthood/Responsibility, Maturing/Aging and Death. It gives me such an amazing feeling when I think about it. I tend to get really upset when people have such bad reactions to people who wear pentacles. It's very sad that they can't see how beautiful it is.

Hmm... that's a nice reading of the symbolism of the pentacle, Too2sweet. Reclaiming as a tradition has always looked interesting to me but I can't say I know much about it as I don't have personal experience with the group.

What I practice is a mix of paths, but I think a lot of what I do has the Reclaiming "stamp" since that is what most of my beginning experiences were from. There are different levels of symbolism (as you advance in practice) for the pentacles, but I have never had the chance to study them as I did the Pentacle of Life.
