Somehow his heart drew him to her, in his time of urgency. Everything was clear as a summer's stream to him, after that talk with her father. He could not wait another day. He simply had to find her!
So it was that he had arrowed right past where they met, not veering towards the human village, but plunging into the woods. Today was such a fine day down here, he knew without a doubt that she'd be out gathering. But where? His path wavered as he debated, but finally turned purposefully towards the warmest part of the local territory. The spring has come unseasonably early, at least in certain areas, and this part of the woods were the best place to find freshly growing plants.
He didn't quite gallop headlong, keeping himself to a ground-eating trot. He had been travelling ever so much more since he'd begun seeing Gemma. He still spent much of his time in his home glen, but now he ventured away from it more regularly, and went further than he had before. All because he loved her, he thought bemusedly. He'd have left his glade altogether if she'd asked it. But would she want to live there herself? His heart leapt in his throat at this thought, so he turned his mind back to finding his way through the forest on the dim deer trail he was currently traversing.
He burst out into a sunlit bowl, the thick new green grass seeming to smile up at the sun which hovered solicitously overhead. But all that was lost on him, for there was Gemma, standing amongst the early flowers. He caught his breath in a sharp gasp, for in such a setting she was more lovely than any flower she could name to him. So beautiful was she, that he found all he could do was stand in the split of shadow and sunlight beneath the edge of the trees, gazing like a lovestruck fool at the one most beloved to his heart.

The mare had been completely unaware of the happenings with her family and what had happened (of course) at the meeting between her love and her father. Even if she'd been told, she likely would have been unaware for at the moment Gemma was busy trying to extract some pretty pink-red flowers from a vine without crushing them and making them lose their juices. It was a difficult task and she seemed to be completely engrossed in it.
It wasn't until the coral root was carefully lay down in the half-full basket she'd taken from the two-legger village that she felt the odd tingling feeling that told her she was being watched. Satisfied with her catch of the day, Gemma lifted her head to look in the direction of where Leon was standing, a warm smile touching her lips.
"Leon!"

His heart could have stopped in that one, perfect moment. Her raising her head, her curling manetips catching the light of the sun, her eyes filling with love as she caught sight of him, and her burst of joy in greeting him. He stood stock still as time slowed to a crawl, every beat of his heart a lifetime to appreciate.
But soon he was beside her nuzzling her ecstatically, lost in the feeling of love and affection that always came over him when he was with her. Nothing could be wrong in the world where shse existed. "Oh my Gemma, how I miss you when I'm not by your side!" His eyes glowed brightly with his feelings for her, his voice breathy with intesnity.

Such beautiful exclamations of love! Gemma wasn't used to such over the top, being a simple mare herself, though it was certainly appreciated and simply made her smile brighten considerably, "I've missed you as well, Leon. Where have you been? Last I heard from my mother my father ran off..." Her brows furrowed. It was her fault, too. That her parents were fighting!
But that was here nor there at the moment. Determined not to ruin their reunion, the wind mare shook her head a bit and nuzzled into the stallion who had captured her heart, "What have you been up to?"

Well that certainly stopped him in his tracks. "He did?" Leon asked, blinking at her in mild astonishment. "I... was talking to your father." He gulped, trying not to lose his momentum, or his courage. What if she said no? What if her father really didn't like him after all? What if...
But the thoughts trailed off as he registered her closeness, her affection. The other thoughts tumbled out of his head entirely again. His world was her, that's all there was to it. And it was time he told her so.
"Gemma," he began, his voice warbling a bit, as if his inner self trembled. "Heart of my heart, I must tell you something. I have been remiss in not telling you sooner, or more often." He paused, eyes tracing the lovely lines of her face, as if to burn them forever in his memory. "My love, I have never felt so strongly about anything, nor been moved by anyone as much as you move me." He took a quick in-out breath before going on, almost as if he feared being stopped, or losing his nerve.
"My life will never be complete without you. Everything in my world now revolves around where you are, when I saw you last, the smell of your mane, the touch of your muzzle, the sound of your voice." He had to pause for breath, his words tumbling one over the other. Breath caught, he continued in a rush. "And I can't wait any longer to ask you, before some brighter, more studly, more noble stallion sweeps you away for his own."
His heart in his throat, he moved in front of her, looking deep into her eyes earnestly. "Gemma my love," he almost whispered. "Will you stay with me always? Will you be my mate?"

"Yes, he did. But it's not...of any importance, at this current moment." It really was, but Gemma wasn't one to want to bring certain moments down, and for the time being she was content. She could always check on her parents later, right? Curiosity hit her like a ton of bricks when he told her he had something to tell her, however, and the mare's head tilted slightly to look at him, "Go on...?"
Oh, Gemma hadn't been expecting what came next, however! Her golden eyes widened several sizes larger, though other than that she remained calm, no movements save for the swish of her tail behind her in a smooth pattern.
When the silence reigned over the two again, Gemma allowed it to continue for a long moment as she took a page out of her mother's book and carefully chose her words. Wouldn't due if she sounded horrible in this!
"Leon," she started, shifting away from him and looking at the coral root at her feet, "My life will never be the same now that you're in it. It's changed so significantly," Her head lifted, and she beamed, "So much better than it was before - and I thought it really couldn't get any better! You don't have to worry about a brighter or more studly stallion, because you're bright and beautiful and the most noble outside my father that I've ever known and I love you with all of my heart. If you want to take me as your mate, Leon, then yes. I will be your mate."
It was said as calm as usual, a glittering light in her eyes. "But I demand meeting your family."

Leon had expected that surely explosions would go off when she said yes. Or perhaps trumpeting music sung by a thousand caroling birds would burst around them. Or perhaps all the stars would fall from the sunny sky in a glittering cascade of glory.
Instead, a tear rolled down his cheek. Then another. Soon his cheeks were soaked with them, and he realized he was crying. Crying for joy. They simply kept coming in a silent outpouring of inexpressible happiness. Unashamed and unabashed at his reaction, he flung himself at her, pressing his neck agains her own and curling his chin around the back of her neck, holding her tightly close as if he would never let her go.
This was the climax of his life, he was convinced. Nothing could top this, not ever.
"Of course you must meet my family! They will be overjoyed to learn of our becoming mates!" Especially his sister, he was sure. He paused suddenly, realizing something. He had been so very wrapped up in Gemma, he hadn't even told his family yet about her! "I think they will be rather surprised," he admitted in a bemused tone. "I do believe I've forgotten to find them to tell them about you at all!" He cast her an embarassed but delighted look. "But that won't lessen their happiness for us."
He had moved away slightly at his realization, and now he rocked onto his hindquarters, forelegs striking the ground and bouncing his forequarters upwards, upwards, higher and higher, until he reared, pawing towards the blue skey, head thrown back in a wild whinny of elation. For once, he wished he had her wings to fly, to soar as his heart did among the clouds.
He came back heavily to all fours, breathless and laughing. "Oh Gemma, I promise you this day, your happiness will forever be my task, my delight." He moved close again to nuzzle her, more gently and softly this time. Softly he whispered, "I love you, my mate."
