It was a chilly morning in the jungle, a low fog obscuring the underbrush. Mfuto counted himself lucky to have found a small clearing in the trees through which the sun shone down. He lay there, sprawled across a mossy fallen log, his long pink scars glinting a bit in the sunshine. He didn't think much of them anymore; it had been many a month, after all, since he'd gotten them.

He didn't think much on his lost friend either, though that was largely because he tried his hardest not to. In fact, if a single thought of Uten ever came to his head, he would cover his ears with his paws and sing loudly until the thought went away.

Uh oh. There it went again. "LA LA LA! LA DA DEE DEE DEE DA!" Mfuto hollered into the early morning quiet, his voice echoing through the trees.

Well, if Alana or Heu needed him... they sure wouldn't have too hard a time finding him. Besides that, Mfuto always tried to never be too far from them.

Alana turned to the direction that a horrible noise came from. Ugh, what was wrong with that stupid lion now? She yawned and moved from her branch, she had been sleeping happily as well till he went and woke her up.

Moving from branch to branch she soon found him.

"You know this is suppose to be a peaceful jungle!" She was feeling a little grumpy, after all she had been woken from a nice peaceful sleep! She loved to sleep on her branches in her home. She adored it, so why she then had to be woken up? It better be for a good reason!

When Alana snapped at him, Mfuto recoiled, ears flattening back against his scruffy mane. This caused him to slip, and he tumbled gracelessly off the damp log and onto the leafy carpet below. He recovered himself quickly and peeked up from behind the log, still droopy as before, forepaws and chin just resting upon the log's rotting surface. "I's sorreh, Alana," Mfuto said. "I di'n't means t' wake yous." In fact, now he couldn't even remember what he'd been making so much of a fuss about; sometimes it was a blessing in disguise that his mind was like a sive.

All the same, he hated to trouble his dear friend. He was here to support her after all, and as a mother he knew she needed her rest. Now he had to make it up to her. Perking up as best he could, Mfuto tried to claw his way back up onto the log. "If'n you wants, I's could maybeh makin' some quiet noises or musics t' sleeps by," he offered as he perched cautiously. "Or I's could goes away-away." He pouted a bit. He did not want to have to be sent away... but he did not want to bother Alana either.

Life was complicated.

Alana just rolled her eyes. She wasn't normally harsh, far from it but it seemed sometimes that she was bringing up two kids and not one. She didn't mind it just meant that he would be one of the few who would see her harsh side.

"Just stop trying so hard. You need to find a girl, a mate. Thats what I think. Would help you grow up a little." She yawned and stretched before settling herself down on the branch she had landed on. It was difficult bringing up a lion in a way, they were just so different.

Mfuto stared blankly at Alana for a few moments. It was partially because he was so offput by her coldness, but also because of her choice of words. Why shouldn't he try hard? She needed help... and he was here to help her. She'd always been so quiet and kind before... well... before the incident. It just made him that much more hurt that they'd been abandoned like this; it left Alana so hurt.

However, it wasn't the "don't try so hard" bit he was about to question. It was the second bit that perplexed him. He knew what a girl was. He didn't understand why he needed one. He had two girls in his life; Alana and Heu. They were his family. Why did he need another one. He cocked his head off to one side. "Whassa 'mate'?" he asked her earnestly. He'd never heard of such a thing, or if he had, it was a thing long forgotten to him.

Alana just sighed and climbed down from her tree to be level with the lion.

"Still you need to learn I guess..." She let out another soft sigh before turning to look up at the top of the tree's and then she started talking. She didn't look back at Mfuto, it seemed as if she were remembering something and she was. Her parents.

"A mate is someone you love who is your best friend. Someone who you would happily start a family with and will always be there for you." She let out another soft sigh and turned to look at Mfuto.

"A mate is precious. Maybe you should leave the jungle for a while and make some other friends. You don't know many and Heu is getting old enough to look after herself, I am sure we can spare you for a few moons." She smiled softly, not trying to push him away but to encourage him to just get out more.

Mfuto sat up attentively, a good little student, and listened to all Alana had to say. A lot of it still flew right over his young head. He loved Alana. She was like his sister. And, being like his sister, she was famiy to him. He also liked to think of she and Heu as his best friends. And they were always there for him, weren't they? He was always there for them, after all, and it's kind of hard to always be there for someone who isn't always there for you. Kind of goes hand in hand with the always-being-there bit.

So Mfuto's ears flattened back on his head in perplexity. He wasn't sure what part of this equation he was missing. Perhaps the keyword here was start? After all, Alana would still have a family with Heu if Mfuto left, but if Mfuto left, then he...

...

...ohh.

Babies. This was a babies thing wasn't it? He frowned a bit. "I's not sure I wants babies," he told her. But then he sighed and looked down. "But... I does miss havin' mah own bestest friend." Briefly, he thought of Uten, and shuddered and shoved the thought away.

Glancing back up with his bright, innocent green eyes, he briefly fretted. "Do this mean you doesn't want me 'rounds no more?" he questioned. "Hasn't I been helpie-fulls?" Suddenly, he found himself extremely concerned that he somehow hadn't done everything in his power to support his friends. This now became his primary concern.

Alana sighed.

"You don't have to have babies with a mate. They are just a best friend, someone who you can talk to and love." She looked at the lion and shook her head. He needed to grow up somewhat and she knew he wouldn't be able to do it in the jungle. He needed to go out and meet more of his own kind, in the same way Heu was nearly old enough to go off and Alana expected it of her. Sometimes you have to leave your home to truely grow up.

"I love having you around. I just think you need to leave for your own sake. After all you can come back, I will always be here. You just need to make some more friends, meet new creatures." She let a soft sigh escape her again and then turned to look back up at the canopy of trees.

"Sometimes you need to leave to learn. You can come back, you will always be welcome. You know that." She wanted him to learn some lessons of life by himself. Everyone needed to at some point and she was sure it was time he went and learnt.

Mfuto frowned a bit as he sat back and listened to Alana explain herself again. He'd gotten it wrong. He hated getting things wrong... and it happened so often. He figured he could probably be of a whole lot more use to Alana if he could get things right more often. Pursing his lips, he pondered the concept a bit. A best friend. Someone to talk to. Someone to love. Someone to maybe have babies with but not neccessarily. Someone to be family. Some who would always be there. Geeze, where had he seen something like this?

Oh. "Like mah mommy an' daddy, then?" he asked. Of course. That must be it. He hadn't had a word for it before, but it was the whole reason he'd shunned Uten in the first place... because he had bene supposed to be Alana's mate and stick by her and Heu. Being a good mate was one of life's many duties, Mfuto supposed.

Then yes, yes he supposed he would have to find one, in order to make his life complete. Taking to his feet, Mfuto nodded eagerly. "I sees! I sees now!" he hopped forward and nuzzled Alana gently in friendship. "Thankies Alana, I undiestands!" He hopped around in circles a bit. Why, the whole wide world was waiting for him to find a girl who would love him, and to find himself!

He paused, staring at the expanse of the jungle, and his ears drooped. Uh oh. "Um... Alana... I doesn't know wheres to start."

Alana just smiled.

"There isn't a starting place, just go and let your paws lead you. Don't be afraid everyone does it at some point!" She just looked at the lion before turning to look at a branch to go and sit on. She felt like moving and so she jumped to it.

"Just go Mfuto, the more you stay here the more you will think about it and the less of a chance you will ever leave here!" She smiled and looked down at him again. "It will do you some good, honestly."
