Okay, firstly, Ive been confronted with alot of people saying martial arts are sports. I highly disagree with this.

Now to get out of the way of the definition of sports.
A physical activity bound to certain rules and engaged in competitively.

That is wrong because.. it's wrong. Me typing this post would be considered a sport. Chess has been officially declared a sport by a bunch of commitees and such. That definition is too broad, it can fit anything in there. So dont give me taht bullshido crap.

Okay, now for my analogy on this..

Martial Arts is like driving a car. It has a very VERY important use in life and is taught, or is supposed to be taught, as such. A skill to aide you in everyday life. Now.. there is a small aspect of driving that is sport, such as NASCAR, F1, street racing, rally, etc. Does that mean driving as a whole is a sport? No, it absolutely doesnt. Are there aspect of driving that is sport? Of course! (which coicedentally both MAs and racing we watch for the carnage) So dont tell me martial arts as a whole is sport.

So yea.. Comments? This such get me flamed alot. Comon you sport karate and TKD kids, lets rumble!

I would have thought that there are some that are sports and some that are martial arts. I was always under the impression that judo is the sport form of jitjustu and in order to make it safe for competition, they took out many techniques. This is the same for aikido, though it is less of a sport because there are no competitions. But likewise, they took alot out of aikijitjustsu to make it safe to be practiced, where as before, it was used in the war.

Interesting.. But yes.. Sub catagory arts like that do seem to do that. But what about arts like TKD?

Good point... I don't know enough about TKD to say but perhaps with some research...I'll ask around to say the least, see what other people in my dojo think.

TKD has recently gone towards the sports end of the scale...
so most people see tkd as a sport..

TaeKwonDo as a traditional martial art has transformed itself into a modern sport and it has gone through various processes in order to be able to achieve this status --
The governing bodies are continually re-developing the rules and protective wear, not only to enhance the competition element of TKD, but also to include greater protection for the competitors ....I guess like what you said lunaries about judo being the safer ninjitsu..

for example -- TKD sparring in the olympics was totally different to how we spar in our dojang. It was very much if not compleatley a sport..

Etiquettes of tkd --- follow a general code Because of its military background...and when it started up it was very much a MA so those who havent strayed towards the sporty side of it..still teach/learn tkd as a martial art..
where and when I do tkd with my teacher I belive Im practising taekwon-do as a Martial art..

Yep thats the one. It also depends on the association. Generally ITF TKD martial art orientated and WTF TKD is more sport orientated. That is a sweeping generalisation but it fits for most. A good rule of thumb is anything involving olympic is sporty poo (dont mean to offend anyone but I found watching the TKD at the olympics embarrassingly bad)

It's tough, but sometimes you just have to stick it through, because the people that are dissing you don't know what your training is like and how serious you treat it. Only you know that.

Speaking of TKD I discovered there's a BTCB class (WTF) starting at the gym I work at.

It turns out I have history with the instructors of the club they have a 'Olympic TKD training camp' just down the road.

One of the instructors there trained with me and my instructor for years until he decided it was too hard and went to train with them because they promised him his black belt if he did.

The "master" that runs the club is corrupt and gain his 7th Dan and a Master title because he did favours for a korean master who came down to visit a while back.

many of the students are wanna be gangsters that cause trouble at my local town as well.

It's a two hour session so i'm gonna pop down this Tuesday and crack some heads.

I'm also meeting a mate down there afterwards to do some grappling.

Why is so much TKD like that? It seem like lots of the masters in certain accosiations are only masters due to their impressive tongue up arse technique... there's some masters I have a lot of respect for, some genuinely damn hard mo'fo's but there are others that my mum could beat up...
There's a TKD club like that around here aswell, they've got a distinct group of students that like to strup around in their TKD club tracksuits thinking they're the business... despite the fact they've only actually been training a couple of months...
And what is with club products? Club tracksuits, club bags, club mugs, club toothbrushes... my instructor keeps saying he's gona get some tracksuits done for at least the assistant instructors but we've all out right told him we'd only wear em to events like comps and such. There's no way we'd strut round town in em.
Good luck with openin up that can of woopass wink

Meh, turned up ready to go and I find out that it's actually next Tuesday that the class starts so I just trained by myself for a while.

I did get a confirmation from my boss though that's it's definately the group I thought it was.

I'll post a full report once i've been there.
