Located in the dungeons, the Hufflepuff common room can be accessed through a still life portrait, hanging near the kitchens. One need only speak the password for it to swing aside and allow passage.

Although it is located at dungeon level, this room couldn't be more dissimilar to its neighbors, such as the potions class room. Inside there is always a fire burning, a hearth right in the middle of the room, and the feeling of having just arrived at home. Yellow and black drapings - the house colors - line the walls. Big comfortable armchairs, sofas and very large pillows are everywhere. The odd round table can also be found here, for students to work on their assignments or play wizard’s chess, among other games.

Directly opposite of the entrance, hangs a large painting of Helga Hufflepuff with open arms and a serene smile.

To either side of the painting there's a small staircase leading down to round, barrel-top like doors, and beyond them, tunnels take the students to their respective dormitories. Left for boys, right for girls. At the end of each tunnel there's a small circular room with doors all around it, eight to be precise. The one they just came from and then one door for each year. Each of them engraved with a beautiful number of the corresponding year inhabiting it., as students progress in years, to number of the door changes to reflect the students inside, rather than having them move to another room.
All of the rooms are identical; each has its own bathroom and enough beds – beautiful four post beds - for all the students.

There are few windows in the Hufflepuff bathroom since it’s located in the dungeons, but the few that there are, look out into the lake and obviously cannot be opened. The lighting throughout the entire dormitory is supplied by hundreds of floating candles, very much like the Hogwarts great room.

If anyone should look closer at the portrait of Helga Hufflepuff, they will find an inscription written beneath it saying:

“I’ll teach the lot, and treat them just the same.” – Helga Hufflepuff, who brought people from different walks of life together to help build Hogwarts and was loved for her charming ways.
