The Creation of the World - a look into Udoni Mythology
The Udoni religion is the most widely recognized among the people of Centros. The religion dates back several hundred years, but did not become widely accepted until the first King of Konalter doctrined it as the country's principal religion at the end of the civil war.
Ancient texts discovered within the libraries of Naen'ba tell of the history behind creation, as seen in the following scripture:
Quote:
Many ages ago, when the universe was naught but darkness, a single light sprouted from the everlasting void. This light grew and became Larek'ku. After wandering the sea of darkness for many ages Larek'ku grew lonely. Reaching into its chest, Larek'ku removed half its heart and molded it until pleased with the shape. This became the Earth.
Larek'ku breathed gently upon the Earth, giving rise to the formation of the land and seas. It then cast its light upon the Earth, creating the grass, the forests, and the blue skies of daylight. Larek'ku was pleased by the new world it had created, but it was empty of life. After much thought, Larek'ku took a lump of flesh from its body and a handful of the Earthly soil and molded the two together. From this, it fashioned the first creatures of the world; from the Humans, the Elves, and the Dwarfs to the wayward creatures of the land, sea and sky. When finished, Larek'ku set itself within the sky so that it could watch over the world and its children with it's light shining upon them eternally.
However, after several years of watching, Larek'ku noticed that, while the side of the world it watched remained lush and green and its people happy, the side neglected by its light was suffering; the lands turning to waste and its people dying. Larek'ku quickly moved to the other side of the sky so that the dying lands would be restored. However, after a few years the other side began dying as well. Larek'ku now realized that it could not watch one side constantly without the other side suffering. After much thought, Larek'ku decided it would travel the skies at a slow pace so that it could cast its light evenly on all sides of the earth. This was the origin of night and day.
A few years passed and life grew on the planet peacefully. However, there were some that prayed to Larek'ku saying "Why is yours the only light in the sky? The night is dark and leaves us afraid each night until you return." Hearing these prayers, Larek'ku thought carefully and chose to act on them. Once again taking a piece of its flesh and a handful of soil, Larek'ku also took a piece of its mind and molded them together into two separate shapes; one female and one male. These were Silica and Akarion.
Larek'ku gifted both of its new children with its light and placed them in the skies, instructing them to help watch over Earth and its people.
Silica took her position within the northern skies while Akarion took position in the south. Now they would shine their light during the night as Larek'ku continued its travel through the skies each day. The Earth and its people raised prayers of joy in thanks at this new light, feeling comfort in knowing that there would be light to guide them at all times from now on.
As Silica sat within the sky, she watched upon the women of the world. While passing by her one day, Larek'ku saw her thoughtful expression and asked "What are you looking upon with such interest?" Silica answered "Look at the women of the world. They sit happily within their homes. They cook and sew for their families, knowing nothing but happiness. They are happy because they are able make food, clothing, and gifts for their loved ones. They feel joy in giving to others. I wish to know how that feels." Larek'ku was surprised by this. After much thought, Larek'ku said "If you wish to know, then I will give you the chance to know. Leave the sky and journey the world for seven days. Then return to me and tell me what you have learned." Silica thanked Larek'ku and quickly descended to the Earth.
Akarion noticed the absence of his sister from the sky the next night and questioned Larek'ku about it the next day. When Larek'ku explained, Akarion said "Then what of me? You allow Silica to roam the world free of her duty for seven days while I must remain? I too have been watching the people below and wish for the chance to journey among them and learn their ways." Knowing he had a valid point, Larek'ku said "I have promised light in the skies for the people, so both of you cannot leave at once. Once your sister returns, you too may leave the skies and journey the world for seven days. After that time, come back to me and tell me what you have learned."
Seven days passed and Silica returned to her position in the sky as she had been instructed. The next day, Larek'ku asked "What have you learned in your travels?" Silica smiled and said "I have learned that the people of the world are kind and generous. I have seen families work and play together, parents watch their children with love and care, and those who help others in need. I have witnessed good in their hearts. There is great celebration in the birth of a child, a sense of accomplishment in completing work, and happiness in giving something out of good will rather than reward. I have seen great light in the world you have created."
Larek'ku was pleased by the wisdom Silica had acquired and praised her for her findings. In addition, Silica presented Larek'ku with a gift; a golden mantle she had woven during her time on the Earth. Larek'ku accepted the gift, impressed by its fine detail as well as the skill with which it had been made. In return, Larek'ku gave her permission to continue the use of her newfound skills if she wished to do so.
Seven days later, Akarion returned to his area of the sky as he was instructed. The following day, Larek'ku approached him and asked "What have you learned in your travels?" Akarion smirked and said "I have learned that the people of the world are greedy and fearful. Day by day, they stare at the skies, afraid of the power we possess. They are also afraid of each other. They run from those they do not know; they shun those who are different. They are afraid; and their fear sparks hate. They desire to see those different from them disappear. I have witnessed the malice in their hearts. They take great satisfaction from wounding others with their words or hands; they bathe in the blood of other creatures to feed themselves and their families; they take pleasure in taking life to sustain their own. I have seen great darkness in the world you have created. It is only a matter of time before the world is consumed by it."
Larek'ku was shocked by Akarion's response. At this, Larek'ku brought the brother and sister together and said "Light and darkness are two halves of a whole. Each of you have seen one half; the light or the darkness. The world cannot exist without both. It is a balance. To allow one to overrun the other would bring chaos. You must always remember this."
After that, Silica and Akarion returned to their duty in the skies. As Silica sat in her area of the sky, she began to pass the time by sewing. She created a beautiful silken scarf woven from several of her own hairs. The garment gave off such a brilliant sparkle that it was seen by the people below. They praised this beautiful sight, sending up prayers to both Silica and Larek'ku for her to continue. In response, Larek'ku created a great crescent shaped loom for Silica to work upon. Silica quickly went to work, creating an intricate, sparkling veil using her own hair. Day after day, she worked; happily toiling to the prayers of the people. Soon the garment became so immense that it encircled the skies, wrapping itself around the planet; its sparkle lighting up every area of the night sky. This tapestry became known as The Stars.
Akarion watched as this went on, becoming jealous of the praise Silica received. Watching the people below, Akarion waited for night to fall. He then stole into the minds of the people who slept, speaking to them in their dreams and saying "Do I not sit in the sky as well? Do I not give you light in the darkness of the night? Where is my praise?!" Akarion then beset the dreams of the people with visions of disasters to come should he not receive equal praise from them. Fearful of their dreams, the people began praying to Akarion for mercy. They erected altars and temples on his behalf, praying to him for forgiveness. Larek'ku soon began to notice the structures being built and sensed the unrest and uncertainty stirring within the people. Larek'ku went to Akarion and asked what was going on. Akarion smiled and answered "Look at them. They tremble in fear of me. A few nightmares and they lift praise to me instead of Silica. How quickly they have turned to save themselves. Their fear controls their actions. I have commanded and they obey. As long as the people fear me, they will not question me. Are you not impressed?" Larek'ku was seriously displeased by this and scolded him. "You mean to control the people with fear and hate. They turn to you in worship because they are forced to. Look at your sister. She gifts the world with something born out of kindness and joy. That is why she is lauded by the people. They turn to her because they choose to; because she is kind and wise. You would have the people look to you, but you have them do it wrongly." Akarion frowned at Larek'ku, saying "How is it wrong? We gave them the world they have. We gave them life. We allow them life. We give them all they have. Why should we lower ourselves to their level? Why should we serve them? They are meant to serve us! And look how easily they obey!"
Larek'ku was angered by this. As punishment, Larek'ku stripped Akarion of the light he had been given at birth, saying "If you choose the meddle with the darkness in people's hearts, then you shall live in darkness as well. Let this be a lesson to you." Akarion was then thrust away from the planet into the sea of darkness beyond Silica's veil; banished from the Earth and its people. Before leaving, Akarion decreed "This is not over! I will show you the truth! That darkness will consume the world!"
Time passed after that day, and peace seemed to return among the people. However, a few years later, unrest began to stir within the people once more. Families were quarreling; friends were turning into enemies; races and animals were fighting each other without provocation. Larek'ku and Silica both watched this with concern, unable to tell what was wrong, Larek'ku sent Silica down to the earth to investigate; however, upon touching the ground, Silica was instantly attacked by a band of strange creatures she had never seen before. She fought hard to escape and fled back into the skies; but not before her assailants had managed to chop off several long locks of her hair.
Silica fled to Larek'ku's side in tears and explained what happened. Larek'ku flared in anger, it's voice booming across the skies at the people of Earth. "Why have you hurt my child? What have we done to deserve this? I bore this world. I gave it life. I gave life to all. When you cried in the dark, I gave you light. When you cried for aid, I granted you mercy. Even my child has given you a sky blanketed with jewels. I have given you all that is within my power. Was this not enough for you?!" The people all fell to their knees as Larek'ku's voice boomed through the skies. They prayed for forgiveness and begged for Larek'ku's mercy for what had been done.
Then there was laughter in the skies suddenly. A sickening, unpleasant laughter. Larek'ku and Silica looked across the skies to see a sudden darkness bloom; and through the darkness appeared Akarion. He was a shadow of his former glory; his features twisted from his time in the darkness. "I have returned" he said victoriously. "Did I not say that it was not over? How complacent you've become in five short years that I would be able to steal back into the world so easily." He held up the locks of Silica's hair that had been cut off during her attack. "You may have taken my light, but I can take it back just as easily. Light enough to cast on the people if I so wish it; but I find the darkness far more enthralling." Larek'ku flared in anger once again. "You attack your own sister?" Akarion smiled and said "I? No. Why would I when I can have others do it? For you see, I now have my children, as you do. The children born of the darkness that you so adamantly choose to ignore." Akarion then rose a fist and plunged it downward, cracking apart the surface of the planet. From the great fissure that opened came droves of beasts and other creatures; the races born from the darkness beneath the surface of the Earth. From the monsters, the serpents, and the spiders to the Vampires, the Nagas, and the Demons of the underworld. In great mass, they flocked to the surface, flooding over the land like a plague.
The people fled in terror, crying out to Larek'ku for salvation. Akarion laughed as Larek'ku and Silica both watched what was happening in shock. Akarion announced triumphantly "I told you that darkness would consume the world. Look how easily I have caused chaos and destruction among the people. I hold the power over whether they live or die. That is the truth of the power we possess! And with this power, the ruling force of this world shall no longer be you, but I!" With that, Akarion descended to the Earth and began to rally his followers together.
Seeing this, Larek'ku knew that war was inevitable. There was no choice but to follow to the surface and fight for the sake of the people. Silica offered to join the fight, but Larek'ku refused, saying "If we both go, then there will indeed be darkness. You must remain in the sky and keep your light shining. In what terrors are to come, your light must remain strong. There must be light in the sky. There must be Hope for the people." Silica obeyed and watched as Larek'ku descended to the Earth. Many strong warriors flocked to Larek'ku's side in service to help fight for the world. And so the war began, raging for many years.
Silica watched helplessly from the sky; witnessing the immense destruction. Lands turned to waste, blood soaking the soil and fire scorching the sea. The great landscape was split apart, separating families and tearing kingdoms asunder. Akarion's forces were on the verge of victory. Even Larek'ku seemed unable to stop them.
As Silica watched, she was overcome by grief and began to weep; her tears raining down from the sky. The falling tears mixed into the Earth's blood stained soil. From this, a figure rose out of the battlefield. Standing tall and determined, he leaped into the battle without hesitation. This single figure pushed back Akarion's forces with the strength and power of 100 men. Larek'ku looked upon the figure and asked "Who are you?" He answered "I am the people; and the planet for which they fight." This was the birth of Malteus.
Malteaus stood by Larek'ku's side and helped to drive back the hordes of Akarion's followers. Even Akarion's generals stood no chance against him and fell easily. Seeing his forces falling, Akarion turned his attention to the skies, remembering that Silica was left above the Earth; alone and unprotected. Grinning, Akarion leaped into the skies after her. Realizing that Akarion was going after Silica, Larek'ku followed after him.
Seeing that Akarion was coming for her, Silica quickly wrapped herself within the garment of stars and hid from him. When Akarion arrived and did not find her there, he was furious; his body flaring red with anger. Larek'ku soon arrived and the two clashed in battle; the skies thundering from their fight. The battle continued throughout the night until Akarion was suddenly struck from below by three arrows; all of them having pierced his chest. Looking to the Earth, Akarion was infuriated at seeing Malteaus as the one responsible. Angered and now heavily wounded, Akarion knew he no longer had a chance at victory. He bellowed angrily "This is still not over!" With that, he retreated back out into the sea of darkness beyond Silica's veil. Once he was gone, Silica came out of hiding and went to Larek'ku's side, thankful that the battle was at last over. Seeing that Akarion had left them, the remainder of his forces dispersed to the four corners of the world, going into hiding.
Larek'ku brought Malteus up into the skies with them, thanking him for his valor and aid. However, they knew that Akarion may yet again try to return one day. Thus, Larek'ku made the decision to have Malteaus remain in the sky with itself and Silica. Malteaus agreed and was gifted with the power to ride the skies. In addition, Silica made Malteaus a shining silver mantle for him to wear.
Today, the planet has healed, but the scars of the great war remain. The lands split apart are now separated by vast seas. Families separated by the war have become strangers and have created new families of their own throughout the world.
Larek'ku continues its journey in the skies to light the world and Silica continues weaving the tapestry of stars as her light shines each night. However, the never ending struggle continues. Akarion returns every five years in hopes of claiming the world as his, and Silica hides herself each time he comes close. But Malteaus now roams the skies, fending off Akarion whenever he returns; his stalwart guard of the planet unwavering, and causing Akarion to retreat each time~
Larek'ku breathed gently upon the Earth, giving rise to the formation of the land and seas. It then cast its light upon the Earth, creating the grass, the forests, and the blue skies of daylight.
