Hidalgo let his head rise slightly, looking around where he was. The branches of the large pine above him had sheltered him from the worst of the snow, which now blanketed the ground around him, but he was still covered with a fine blanket of white. Stepping away from the rough bark of the tree, he slowly shook himself, and tried to get the heat back in his limbs. It wouldn't do him any good to step forward and fall on his nose because his joints were cold and wouldn't support him yet.
Looking around, he examined the forest around. The pines wore their own thin white blankets now, which meant he would have to watch as he passed under their branches, or be pelted by the burden of the heavy branches. He lifted one foot, then the other, and experimentally put his hoof forward and pressed down onto the fresh snow. His hoof sank only to the hock, but no deeper, and he was glad for that. His progress would not be too hindered by the winter coat the world now bore.
Feeling more awake, and aware, he headed out at a good walk into the snow, to see if he could find anything good to eat today. He hadn't had much luck the day before, and though he wasn't desperate for food yet, he would need to find something to fill his belly soon. At least it was only a day this time, and not several. He had lived through harsher times before, and he hoped he wouldn't have to do it again, but he would survive, and endure.

The brisk air had awaken her early that morning and she was itching to get some flying in and perhaps meet some new faces. She had spent so much time with Axel that she had forgotten about most her old 'friends' and had felt that they possibly had forgotten about her by now. Most she had met while a foal anyways. Dipping a wing tip through the high currents, they took her high over the earth to where she was just a speck to those below.
Wicapi Wakan let her mane and tail bellow behind her ling banners of some old kingdom, though with their pale color they gave the impression of surrender flags or something. Dipping her other wing, she set in to a lazy spiraling glide toward the ground, her front hooves shoved out before her and her hind legs tucked up close in preparation of landing. Liquid gold eyes glanced around the grounds below while her dark ears twitched listening to the sounds of the howling of the winds, it was a gorgeous day to fly.
Wings fluttering a bit at the end of her glide, she touched down, letting her hooves sink into the white show before folding her wings to her sides like a fluffy cloak. Wica, as her old friends had called her, wondered where everyone was, was it that cold out that they all hid?

Hidalgo hadn't managed to get too far from under his tree when he heard a noise up above. In the sky there was a soquili, gliding on the early morning currents of the air. He watched as her mane and tail fluttered over and behind her, as though she had wisps of clouds following her. He smiled at the thought. It had been a while since he had come across anything but the earth-bound soquili. He had forgotten the grace and eloquence of those that were gifted with the ability of flight.
He was amazed at how easily she landed; her hooves sinking into the snow, and her mane and tail settling in around her. They blended in perfectly with the blanket of snow on the ground, and if he hadn't seen them settle around her, he would think that she was part of the earth, so perfectly did the mane and tail blend with the ground. She was an odd assortment of colors, but they blended nicely on her. where blue usually clashed with brown, now faded beautifully to create a unique color.
He smiled to himself, and shook his head. Sadly, he probably knew her parents, so long had it been since he had been out among the others. He may have even seen her as a foal, though he didn't recall any that had her coloring. He took several steps forward, nonchalant, and hoped that he did not scare the mare. It had been so long since he had spoken to any other soquili, that he just wanted someone to talk to now.

Just barely shaking herself off a little as if she had been swimming, her long tail flicking behind her though it barely left the ground completely. Her Grandmother's tail she had been told, even if her coloring was a mix of her mother's browns and her father's swirls. Letting herself ease a bit, an ear swung to the side as the sounds of crunching met them. Slowly turning her head toward the strange stallion that just happened to 'pop' up out of no where. Or at least that's what it seemed like, she hadn't seen him there before.
"Hello stranger." She called out abruptly, though she knew it was going to be said sooner or later. "I haven't noticed that anyone else was around."
Stepping to the side a little she turned and looked toward the stallion, her wings fluffing out at her sides a little trying to warm her sides. A smile graced her muzzle a bit as she waited for her greeting to be replied, hoping to make a new friend. She felt somewhat lonely with just Axel and her family to talk to...

You probably missed seeing me from up there in the sky. I was under the tree right there. He motioned behind him, where his footsteps started as if from nowhere, as they emerged from the cleared area around the base of the tree. I've been told I tend to blend in. He smiled at her, happy that she didn't seem the shy type to run away just because he was a stranger.
My name is Hidalgo. May I ask what yours is? He stopped a few steps from her, shaking himself vigorously to dislodge the white blanket that covered his painted coat. He has glad that it felt warmer today. Maybe spring was finally coming, and he would need to worry about the snows anymore, and their ability to hide anything edible besides tree bark and frozen grass.

Stretching her neck to the side, she looked toward where the stallion had been mentioning toward. She noted the slight impressions in the snow, from where she stood they were just about invisible to the eye, completely invisible from the skies that was fer sure. Turning her attention back to the stallion she looking him over, a nice blend of a merky brown with white. She could tell where he was told he would blend in. Wica nodded, she had been told that she would have blent into anything her colors if not for her mane and tail,
"My name's Wicapi Wakan, but my parents and everyone else calls me just Wica for short." She nodded again. "It seems warmer today then it has been of late, a few days ago I don't think I would have flown as far as I have." She shook her head, making her mane wave and ripple much like a waterfall over her neck. "Has the winter faired well for you?" at this she tilted her head to one side

He nodded his head in a friendly manner, his head tilted sideways and his ears perked so that it would not be taken as an aggressive move.
It is a pleasure to meet you Sica. And yes, it does seem warmer, which I am greatful for. It means that spring is on it's way, and there's going to be some nice grass soon. He couldn't help but nearly drool at the prospect of sweet grass and honey clover. He had been surviving on twigs and bark this entire winter, as it was deep enough to really freeze the grass back, and hide the small dried amounts that were left. Occasionally, he found a frozen patch under a grouping of trees, but he was usually not so lucky.
I am glad it was also warm enough that you decided to go for a longer flight. For I wouldn't have gotten to meet you then. he smiled, before continuing on to her other question. This winter has been particularly harsh, but not something that I couldn't live through. He puffed his chest slightly with pride. There weren't many Soquili who could survive in the deep of winter alone, and with no herd to keep them company and warm, and to not starve to death either. He would not tell her that there had been several times his ribs were prominent at his sides as the food he found could not replenish the energy he used to search for food, nor help keep his body warm. On many occasions, he had been hiding in a cavern and eating what moss he could find on the cavern walls just to survive. But survive he did, and endure.

Wings shuffling at her sides, Wica nodded her head in a friendly manner, she was places to meet someone who wasn't going to tear her throat out for bring what she was, being a skinwalker ot Kalona, though she had yet to meet a Kalona yet. But she hoped not to meet one any time soon...
"Yes, I have yet to experience what grass actually is. I was born in the winter when the snow covered the grounds." She nodded, "So all I know are the mosses from home and the bark off some trees."
Tilting her head to the side, she didn't know of she wanted to see this 'grass' it was strange to her, and she wasn't all that sure what she would think of it. She pawed at the snow that covered the ground, as things turned toward her gift of flight. She loved to fly, it was in her blood after all and the ancients had graced her kind with wings.
"Yes, flying gets me around a lot, just like my father and his parents." She nodded thinking back along her father's line of the family tree.

Well, there are actually several different flavors of grass, because there are many different types. You'll have to find the type you like. There is also something called clover. I love eating that as well, much more then grass. He pawed at the snow, to reveal the brown stocks of old grass. This is the older stuff, but it will be tall and green in no time. He smiled at the brown stocks.
That's an amazing thing about spring. There are so many things that are going to be blooming and growing. I think you'll find that you will like it. And there will be warm currents to ride, which will make it easier to fly. I've always wondered what it was like myself. He looked up towards the cloudy sky. To be so near the heavens. I like my feet on the ground much better, and I love to run, but I always thought it would be fun at one point to fly. Hidalgo then snorts, as if at some old joke. Though some would think I'm too old for such dreams.
