Dailytech articleThe Satin Silver PS3 has been confirmed in Japan, I suspect that its only a matter of time before it comes over here. In Japan its limited to their only SKU, the 40 gig, however no telling if it will be silver in multiple SKU's here.

Sailorcancer2004 Doesn't Japan carry the 80GB any more? From what I've heard, Japan never even got the 80GB...and they ran out of 60GB and 20GB's a while ago, so the Japanese are BCless and left with the 40GB.

Why is Sony only releasing the cool colors in the 40 gig? I happen to like the BC and the four USB ports.

Why do I have a feeling Kutaragi wouldn't have allowed this whole no BC thing and Kaz is an idiot? The 40GB just doesn't play PS2 games, which doesn't make sense to me. I mean from my understanding the 80GBs use emulation... Isn't that just a program on the hard drive or some crap? I don't get how it lowers the cost. Yet it can play PlayStation 1 games. The PS3 is what it is because of him. SURE he could be a tad bit crazy time to time, but God he's A LOT better then some other Presidents in the VG world... I don't think people would mind the 40GB if it had PS2 BC. As you could just use a USB hub to get more USB ports, and a memory card reader for the media cards. Hard drives were never an issue as you could just by a Laptop hard drive and shove it the PS3.

The Playstation brand is what it is because of Kutaragi...I guess I'm not giving Kaz much of a chance...but a lot of what Sony has been doing with the PS3 lately is confusing ever since he took over. Also, partially right about the emulation thing...the 80GB is only half software-emulation. It has a PS2 GPU in it, just not the Emotion Engine Chip. So it's a hybrid between hardware and software emulation...though I've been placing my bets on Sony working on a complete-software emulation for the 40GB PS3 behind the scenes...I just doubt they're overlooking this like BC isn't important to a lot of customers.

Thing is, Kutaragi was a hardware man, and he got in a bit of trouble for going over budget on the PS3, Kaz isnt doing as well from a gamer point of view because he is a software man, not realizing that hardware is really more important then ANY software for the system. He doesnt realize that you need the hardware or atleast emulators because gamers like to play their old stuff, thats one reason the PS2 did so well, so it would be logical to apply it to the PS3. Oddly enough, the BC was pulled from the 40 gig to cut costs, but I want to know how much it really effected cost to cut a bit of software from it.

They could add the EEC back in and keep the same prices as soon as they put the smaller Blu-ray laser and smaller CPU and GPU in.

With all the features of the original PS3, unless they think they can pull in alot more coin by having the cheaper model but there is a work around for that too, simply discontinue the 40 and say hve the 80 become the cheap and introduce a newer SKU.

You know, I think the simplest solution would to be to make a software emulator for the 40GB and all future PS3s so everybody has BC. I doubt Sony is actually ignoring the whole BC issue...knowing Sony and their tendency to deny things or give the "no comment" answer, they're probably already working on one behind the scenes. I think that would be a solution because that's really the main thing everybody is complaining about. Not many people are complaining about the lack of card readers or less USB ports.

Well GDC is coming up...
I think the 40GB model had to come out. When it came out PS3 sales really started to go up a lot, mostly because of price.
As far as Ken and Kaz goes, I think Ken is more like it's my way etc. Which I think really got into conflict with Sony. It's no mystery that the cost to make a PS3 is extremely high. What I think happened was Ken and the heads at Sony started butting head about the PS3, and then Ken just kinda left. When Kaz came, the heads at Sony most likely pressured him to lower PS3 making costs, and most of his time is spent "fixing" what Ken did.
I can see another model come out and over take one of the existing models, most likely the 40 GB. I think the 40GB model was really just out to get the PS3 into more homes etc.

Im asking because I dont know for sure, as Im not sure where the software was placed. If and when the silver comes here, i wonder if it will be a new model with BC in it.

The 80GB PS3 wasn't exactly software-emulation. It still had a PS2 GPU. As for where the emulator is at...my guess would be installed on the flash, not the HD.
