Hello,
I am new to the guild....I was just wondering if any of you have children on Gaia. I have three girls that got on and spend some of their time on here...As a concerned parent I decided to check it out...What I have seen is fun and I can see the appeal, but I have also seen many many disturbing things as well.
Sexually explicit topics seem to run rampid, and cybering is everywhere, as well as foul and vulgar language. This concerns me. I have reported several people and they always act like I am the bad guy, and have yet to hear back from Gaia on anything...Anybody else concerned? I have found kids as young as 7 wandering through the towns amongst it all...It makes me sick to my stomach to watch it...

i know what you mean! but there are quite a few decent places to be. just avoid the ahem* annoying ones.

because i'm stuck with dial-up, i never go into towns or anyplace else that has people in it. the folks that do puzzles and the slots and cards tend to be cool but if they are cybering, i go somewhere else.

i don't waste my time telling anyone if i have reported them. they were itching to fight with someone anyway. the really nasty ones most likely opened the account to be abusive to others because they can't do it to anyone's face or they have real homelife issues. so getting banned is no big deal, they just open up another account.

and i must confess that my husband and i have considered setting up accounts for our 4 year old twins and using them as mule accounts. they would be so gaiawealthy by the time they get to actually play! rofl seriously, our boys love to play our games for us, in particular the puzzle.

I had thought about the points you make as well....Most of them clearly are looking for attention, and I am guessing most of them don't have really caring parents to start with and are neglected on the whole. But my three girls just love the games and such...But ya just wonder about people sometimes and how they get to that point...I would love though to put some more mature people on my friend list that aren't obsessed with that 1 topic...

my son is seven and would love to get onto gaia but i haven't made an account for him yet. I want to wait a bit longer. I let him play dress-up with my avatar and he wants a boy lol He also likes to decorate my house and play puzzles.

Jen is my oldest and the one here on Parent's with me. Drayal is my youngest and 16. I do worry about the places, but realized I could not protect my children all the time. We have a good filter on our computer and I try to be always available to talk about issues and let them know I am available whenever they need me - I am sure I miss a lot of things - but I also try to talk about how inappropriate or immature something is AND WHY I think it is.
I also have been very glad to see some other "mature" Gaians that have lost the need for the vulgar languages, etc. It sure makes the time spent here a lot more fun!

I guess i do need to try and find more mature gaians, but they are hard to meet...I do discuss things with them, but geeeesssshhhh, I still son't understand those brain dead people that don't understand how inappropriate it is exposing our children to such things so rapidly and overwhelmingly hurts there little souls..(not you) but those that KNOW little kids are on here on just do what they do anyway...shows a lack of their own maturity level in my opinion, as well as a general respect for others. Anyways would love to know more of the older mature parents here who GET IT

Yeah, I sucked mom (MsRoseLovingJo) into Gaia by showing her word bump. whee I love the games including Word Bump, Puzzles and Cards. I generally avoid the forums (except occasional visits to the Q&A- usually helping out, occasionally asking questions). I also am very careful when it comes to the events. I tend to stick to my little threads with the users here on Gaia I have met and love. I have made some wonderful friends here... that's what keeps me coming back. I have several guilds that I like to chat in and I also have a couple mini-shops that I work in. So by limiting where I hang out I have managed to avoid a lot of the nasty stuff here on Gaia.

Oh, and to answer the topic question; no. My oldest is only 4, and El is not quite 2.

I have 2 teenagers on Gaia (18 and 16) - I definitely will not let my 2 girls on here (6 and 8 cool unless they're doing a jigsaw or helping me with my avi - and I'M RIGHT THERE! I'm also glad to have found a couple of guilds with some intelligent conversation and mature people! There's definitely a lot of immature one-track minds out there!

My boys stick to a few guilds (I know which ones) and they know to ignore or go to other places when the conversation takes a turn for the worst.

my niece got me on gaia but i had a hard time explaining to her how to walk away from flamers. needless to say she got banned on gaia and my space by falling into their traps and hasn't been back since. she was the typical hormonal teenager screaming about how these people had no manners/didn't play fair or nice, etc. she was trying too hard to make the other kids see reason and she got hurt by fighting back. this is where we parents gotta do our best to explain that though we play nice and by the rules at home, the rest of the world does not and will try to drag you down to their level.
