Darkfire's deep emerald eyes scanned the area in front of her, swallowing every bit of detail in the harsh winter weather that she could. Her tail, ever-moving, swished from side to side angrily behind her, smacking against trees and rocks and leaving dark imprints. Her hooves, cloven and helpful to grasp onto the slick snow and ice, clodded along heavily, echoing off of the flat surroundings. Disgrace, she heard the voices again, loudest in her right ear, and wiped at her face with her wing, trying to get them to shut up. She knew they thought she was a disgrace, she knew they thought she was a dirty half-breed. Why did they have to constantly remind her? Growling deeply, she nearly collided with a tree as she angrily rocketed off the beaten path, her tail leaving a deep scar on a nearby trunk. She wasn't running, but her wings still pumped beside her to keep her momentum going, and her hooves stomped the earth like an earthquake. The voices started going again, and Darkfire was forced to stop. "Shut the hell up!" she hissed at herself, covering her ears with her kalona wings. The black tips touched her black unicorn horn, and she growled. Turning her head, she spotted a small gray squirrel. Not much of a snack, but one can't be too picky. Silently, she stalked around a tree until she was within feet of the squirrel. Then, in one graceful, yet powerful, movement, she snatched up the squirrel, snapping its neck in her pointed teeth, and killing it instantly. She returned to the clearing, the dead, dripping squirrel hanging from her mouth, and began to eat.

The tangy scent of blood reached the small mare's nostrils. She froze instantly. even if it wasn't a kalona or a skinwalker she would be fair game for a bear, mountain lion, or wolves.
Oh how she wished it were night!
That way she could roll in a bit of mud since the snow had started to melt some. The wind was biting cold and made her shudder for a moment.
But wait! A voice.
Maybe it was a coincidence, but there was always a chance that it wasn't. The mare looked at her feet to make sure she didn't snap any twigs as she carefully, and painstakingly made her way to the safety of her teepee and her two legger.
There was no sound in the forest. The eerie silence disturbed her. The other animals knew something was amiss. Once thing was certain, however, she had to get out of the forest and now.

Darkfire's ears pricked up in curiosity, wondering why the forest was silent. At this time of day, the forest was usually alive with sounds like birds fighting and nocturnal animals snoring. But now... it was quiet. All the better to hear the clumsy, injured animals with.
She whirled her head around, scanning the narrow spaces between the trees. Dropping the squirrel, only partially-eaten, she thought she had heard breathing, her favorite sound in the world besides the sudden silence of a freshly-killed meal. Growling deep in her throat, Darkfire plunged into the trees, sniffing at the air and following the unmistakable scent of another living creature. Her predatory instincts had taken over against her other thoughts, and she realized too late that she had dropped the squirrel. Oh well... the thing she smelled would no doubt be larger and much more worth it.
The ruby-colored Unikalona mare peeked her head around a tree, and was slightly confused to spot an extremely large skunk trotting along a short distance away. Wait a tick-- that was no skunk. Sure was colored like one, but it was pony-sized... yeah, it was a pony. So much better than a skunk.
Darkfire slipped back into the darkness, waiting for her chance to strike.

Flower stopped for a moment, eyes wide in horror. That was the unmistakable sound of hooves. Oh. dear. God! She was sure she couldn't outrun whomever it was, unless it was another Usdia, and her instincts were screaming at her to bolt.
Her mind was reeling as she tried to penetrate the thick fog and get a coherent thought to form. 'Okay, the footfalls stopped which means...whatever it is...is. stalking. me.' She thought, starting to panic a little. If she ran flat out she knew it would be hard to change her direction once she had her momentum going so she continued at a walk, scanning the area around her, ears swiveling every which way. If need be hopefully she could find a thicket of thorns or a hollowed out root system to squeeze herself into if need be. The chances of this, however, were slim and she knew it.
In her mind, she was as good as dead.

Darkfire stalked along in the trees, her hooves making as little noise as possible. She watched the little Usdia panicking, and felt a faint grin spread across her face. Nothing better than seeing the reaction on her next victim's face before destroying it.
She trotted slightly ahead of the mare, in good spirits. Her first large meal in days, she was looking forward to watching the sunset and picking the white and black fur from her teeth. Her stomach just about grumbled, but she silenced it with her wing; too close to the kill to ruin it now.
You're disgusting, she heard in her ear. Shaking her head, she stopped for a moment; she really did not need that stupid unicorn whispering to her while she was planning a kill. The unicorn was silenced, most likely by the starved kalona side of her personality, which pleased Darkfire immensely.
Now seemed like the time. The little Usdia mare had taken a path that was a dead end in a hundred yards or so, and Darkfire was planning to trap her. She either had the choice of falling to her death in the ocean, or being eaten by a Unikalona with a nasty temper and a taste for flesh.
The mare was almost to the end. Now was her chance.
Darkfire couldn't wait any longer. She popped out of her cover slightly ahead of the mare, her smooth yet chilling voice whispering, "Hello, love."

As soon as the red and grey mare made her appearance it took Flower only a few moments to register all the information that she needed; teeth run like hell.
She immediately broke into a lope, her hooves pivoting her so she turned her course to the right where the forest got more dense. She had no time to think, but needed to do so more than she ever had in her life. She knew there was no way to outrun the mare and her mind just wasn't cooperating with her.
At least she had stamina and could hopefully fit into places where the larger mare couldn't reach her. The mare knew that running would start the other mare's 'chasing' instinct but she didn't see any other option. Perhaps if there was a snow and log fallen ravine the wood would shelter her a bit and the snow just might erase her scent. But that was highly unlikely and a rare find in the best of times.
Oh how she wished she would run into Scythe!
