Spoiler: Highlight to read
Near the end of the series, Ed and his father are on the other side of the gate. I want to know how they got there in the first place. Did I miss something, or is it explained later?

Iron Nail kiki kittys are only 10k.. not 36k.. If they were 10k then I would be really happy. But the price actually went up to 40k!

The Gate is like Death. The border, really. Well, yeah. It's hard to explain. But for his father,I dont really know. They never said bout it. But Dante said she killed him so it's a possibility you go on the other side of the gate when you die. Well, I think that happened....

Well, I think that happened....What I think: I think that when Dante said she killed Ed's dad I think she meant sending him to the other side but I know that Howenheim explained to Ed what he was doing there when Ed's first travel beyond the gate
Conversation:
Ed: What are you doing here?
Howenheim: Dante sent me here, she separated my mind and body but somehow I managed to rebuild myself and got here...
See, Ed got there because when he tried to turn Al back to normal he sacrificed himself therefore sending him beyond the gate with Howenheim.
Like Howenheim said, " This place(beyond the gate)is where the power of transmutations is gotten.. Every circle an alchemist draws gets it's power here." Well, that's what I think though.I'm not entirely sure.
