Time has passed; winter was fading as the snow was slowly retreating from off the surface of the ground, the boughs of trees were begining to sprout out new buds that soon would become tender branches adorned with leaves, springs essence was soon to come as the life of bountiful vegetation, colors and fragrances were delicately wafting within the air much like a tantalizing preview of what was soon to come. And with the passing season, the small colt was getting stronger yet his exhiliration, zest and hyper, upbeat personality continued to seem unceasingly and just as strong, if not more powerful with his own mesh of surreal and obscure outlook on life which remained positive and innocent as ever.
Rue's pale ears flickered as his crimson tail swept behind him, his eyes darting about in every direction as his maw gaped open in awe. It was so beautiful! Everything smelled so nice and the sensations of such auromas tickled his nostrils and caused him to giggle every so often. That ever present lopsided smile stretched wide across his maw almost looking as if it was plastered there for good. Small hooves clopped on the ground as he ran circles around his daddy, nickering and tugging at his fathers similar long, elegant locks of mane.
"DADDY IS'N IT BEAAAAAAUTIFUL? RUE LIKES SMELLS AN' COLORS VURY MUCH, YUSH!" The colt exclaimed, giving a small laugh as he parted throug his fathers mane with his muzzle, slinking his head through and peering up at Ezriel. "DADDY SPRING LIKE TOO?"
Though Rue hadn't become familiar with all of the seasons just yet, already the dawning of spring seemed to be his favorite. There was so many things that he had never seen before! Things with fluffy tails, things with wing-a-lings, things with bright colors and things that made weird noises- my the colt could just go on and on! Rue was certain that it was his favorite- it had to be!
Who couldn't love all of the colors and scents?
Oh yes- another season was passing and the cold soon would be vanquished with the warmer season of spring and, eventually, summer. Ezriel never did have a fondness for any season yet spring seemed like a damn good time to at least help teach Rue the basics of how to defend himself if ever the unthinkable was to dawn- that unthinkable meaning any event having to deal with Rue or Cassiel in danger by means of their own grandpa, Reaper. It was true that Ezriel didn't have a hell of a clue what his fathers impression was of him as he was now a father but if it did consist of bloodshed or means of 'revenge' Ezriel wasn't going to let Rue be a sitting duck in such an event. No- Rue needed to learn.
At his mind had been wandering, his sons loud and excited voice caused him to jostle slightly- glancing down towards the colt whose head was peeking through his mane with that typical wide, lopsided smile and just a bit of drool trailing from the corner of his maw along with those pure black orbs that held a kindling light in the midsts of them.
"It's-it's nice, Rue," he commented with a bit of uncertainty, pursing his lips in a rather confused manner on exactly what to say.
He never really took the time to admire nature or the scents in the air or- well, much of anything really. His mind was so engrossed in the mess and tangles dealing with his family, with Cassiel and Eponine and- damn, with her family whom he was certain he -never- wanted to run into. How would they think of him? Would they think of him as a monster? As a beast who stole something from their daughter that she could never be given back? Every option and possible outcome never did settle well with him and Ezriel would stray away from that option and make sure that it never did happen. His duty as a father consisted of being there for Rue, Cassiel and when he could help out Eponine while also getting his foals acquainted with his side of the family. In no way did he want to compromise and have to meet Eponine's side. Hell no! The only damn thing that could arise was more tension, stress and pressure and, as for Ezriel, he wasn't the best under pressure and could easily become an agressor and rather defensive and take the first strike.
Oh no, no, no, no!
He was better off not dealing with Eponines side of the family!
"Whut's daddys favoooooooorite thing 'bout it?" The colt squealed with excitement, pulling his head from out of the sea of mane as he once again danced and bounced acrouns his father. "Tell, tell, tell, tell, tell!"
"Its just all damn-tastic...?"
"Daddy dat dun' coooount, silly!" Rue laughed with a giggle, swaying his tail behind him while butting his head against his fathers leg. "Whut do you like 'bout it? Like food? Clooooouds? Snoooooow? FURRY ANIMINALS THAT TALK WID RUE? Or maybe .....feathers?"
Feathers? Clouds? Furry animals?
If only Ezriel could launch his own hoof into his face perhaps he could knock some sense into himself as to unlock the logic to his sons 'unique' choice in options. Yes, Rue was vastly different and full of life but sometimes his son seemed to remind him of-
No!
No, no, no no!
He was not gonna say it and it was a stupid thought too.
The stallion gritted his jaws together slightly with a minute grinding as he glanced towards Rue. At times he just nodded his head, smiled hesitantly and tried to make sense of it or add to his sons attempted conversation but other times Ezriel just- well, he just didn't understand a damn word that Rue said! Ezriel loved his son, one coud be sure he did and his daughter as well, but it seemed that he must have gotten more than he could have ever bargined for. Yet in spite of that, Ezriel couldn't have been blessed with a more perfect son whose unceasing attempts to comfort, and help pull his father out from his own pains as well as a daughter that reminded him of his own self and one who had so much potential just like her brother. Be it fate or destiny chosen by the gods, it seemed that he had some luck on his side.
But the stallion had yet to come to turns that he had lost Nimue forever and someday, somehow, he only wished that he could win her back without Reaper seeking to kill him. Yet that was impossible.
Oh- right. He had to answer the question.
"Well- er....I guess I like the clouds? You can see a lot of shapes and things in the clouds rather than just blobs," the stallion replied, giving a minute stare up towards the heavens which he too had learned to despise. "Sometimes they look just- just damn-tastic."
The little colts ears perked upwards, a gasp suddenly sounding from his maw. "RUE LIKE CLOUDS TOO! RUE AND DADDY WATCH CLOUDS AN' FIND SHAPES TOWGETHUR?"
"Right now?" Ezriel replied, knitting his brows slightly.
"PWEEEEEASE?" Rue whined, flicking his ears close to his skull as he tenderly butted his head against his fathers leg and lipped at it as well.
"Rue be good boi- yush, vury good! Promise!"
Pursing his lips slightly as he directed his attention in front of them to an open clearing where most of the snow had already melted away from the ground, Ezriel glanced back towards his son and into the colts pleading face adorned with a slightly quivering lip and big, wide eyes that were pleading for some fun. Being the fatherly type that couldn't say 'no' to his son nor be the one to crush his surreal dreams, hopes and outlook, Ezriel sighed with a light chuckle.
"Fine, fine, fine." Shaking his mane as his spaded, spiked tail swayed behind him Ezriel slowly began to lighten up a bit more as he inclined with his head towards the open patch of grass. "You know the drill."
Much like a rocket whose ignition was suddenly ignited, the colt's expresison widened as he pivoted side to side with his father and rocketed off with a run towards the open pasture. "YAAAAAAAAY! RUE LUV CLOOOUDS! CLOUUUD WATCHING CLOOOUD WATCHING!" As the distance between both father and son lengthened, Rue pranced and eventually flopped down on the grass as muddy water squirted up onto him and splashed him in a scattered array. He gave a shake of his head with a continuing lopsided grin.
"CO'MON DAAAAADDY!"
Ezriel chuckled to himself and eventually made his way, laying behind his son so that the small colt could snuggle up to him and make comments and notes of what shapes the clouds seemed to favor, make and what was pretty and what Rue liked best. Oh yes- there was a long list of critiques from all of the other clouds which the colt has observed and his preferences but it was easy to say that Rue was rather amusing in a cute and innocent way.
As the colt scooted closer and tucked himself close to his father, Ezriel looked upwards.
"What do you see?"

Spring. It was always his favorite time of year, the snow was slowly melting in the lowlands and life began to spring anew. Even up in the mountians the days became brighter and more tolerable thanks to the snowstorms becoming few from the heat. Really, Spring was beautiful no matter where you went in this vast world. Twilight had seen it all, and as he took in a deep breath of the warming air whilst his eyes took in the small buds appearing along the tree branches and sprouts of foliage through the clumps of snow. Oh yes....this certianly was the best.
Unfortunately, Twilight wasn't on a walk to admire the scenery, not at all. As the last days of winter had approached he'd been confronted by his daughter Eponine and of course...her daughter. The ebony stallion had been oblivious to what had become of her and at the news he'd been bowled over. Infact he'd also been quite shocked to hear about Marius' children as well....now that his relationship with Cosette, and his children were back on the right track; he knew it was about time to go visit his grandchildren and get to know them. Afterall, he was proud of his bloodline; every last one of them and wanted them to know where they'd come from.
Wasn't that what every grandparent wanted?
Mentally going down his checklist, He was pleased to cross Cassiel off his list seeing that both she and Eponine was staying with the family for a while so the two could get back on their feet. Marius had been a bit elusive as of late yet knew it would be much easier to find he, Neve and their kids than it would be to locate this stallion; Ezriel was his name? And of course Eponine's son, Rue.
So, here he was, walking along the woods tracking a smell which was partially similar to his own and Eponines, in what he believed must be that of his grandson. Luckily he was still keen in his nomad abilites from the earlier years, as it only took a few days to get on the trail of his extended family. Hell, the hoofprints on the muddy ground were a dead giveaway of some soquili nearby. By the looks of it, the large and cloven hooves would be none other than Ezriel and the mass of tiny hoofprints running around each of the larger ones must have been his grandson. Hyper little thing by the looks of it, much like his own son Aiolos.
Leaning his head down to sniff at the prints gently, his ears perked when a shrill came from the meadows up ahead. Well, it seems like the time to meet the 'family' per say was now.
Trotting with a bit of hurry to his step as he tossed his long locks to the side and out from his sight, he slowed to a silent walk as he peered out through the bushes into the vast open field.
A smile crawled over his lips at the sight of red, ivory and ebony, father and son sitting and by the sounds of it locating shapes out of the clouds. How very....fatherly of him. Certainly this was a suprise from what he was imagining, but as he shook his head he knew that being judgemental was never a good thing. This was in a way, his son by mate...even if Eponine and he weren't going to be sticking together; they would be family for life thanks to the kids.
Might as well get it over with.
Stepping forth out of the bushes, his tail flicked slightly as he loped over to the pair calmly. Twilight was a near master at being as non-threatening as a butterfly, of course with years of practice with a warm smile stretched on his maw. Stopping a few feet away, he cast his cerulean orbs to the sky and chuckled to make himself known to the duo.
"I can see....what looks like a little mouse, playing tag with another mouse."
Grinning softly, he dipped his head politely to the pair and stepped up beside them while watching them carefully. He'd met a few strange Soquili in his days yet this one had to be the more interesting of them with those aray of spikes. It was a bit strange how his grandson or daughter bore none of those traits except his colours. Grinning mentally, he knew the feeling....no other of his children held his spiral less pelt other than Eponine.
"I'm not sure if you've even heard of me....but I know a lot about you two. My name is Twilight, and I guess I could be considered your father by mate, and..." His eyes trailed to the little colt as he flashed a big smile on his lips, "Your Grandpa."
"I hate to interrupt on such a nice moment between you two....but after Eponine and Cassiel returned to the family, I just had to meet my grandson and since I was told he was with you...it took a bit to track you down. You're very elusive, I can tell....and as you can see I'm starting to look like I have the years of experience." The older stallion mused, a deeply soft chuckle escaping his lips. "Its almost as if you're trying to be ghosts, running from someone."
Well, he wouldn't go into the details of what their tracks said to him, but from the lack of stopping points in their steps he could tell the two traveled almost constantly. One would only do such a thing if they didn't want anything to catch up.
"Ezriel....is it not? May I ask, as well as you, Rue....what can you two see up there in the clouds?"

Both father and sons' orbs were fixed upon the clouds, watching the assortment of cirrus, cumulus and nimbus clouds roll across the sky with the accompaning light breeze. Rue gaped his maw ajar in pure awe as his stubby, crimson tail swished back and forth as he leaned against his father. "Rue spies wid' his luttle eyes....RUE 'SAHS A BEAR! AN' A BIRD! AN' FEEEESH!" The colt squealed, clopping his hooves on the ground as he couldn't help but giggle. His tounge peeked out from the side of his maw slightly as his head tried to lean back a bit more to look at his daddy.
"Whut dus daddy see?" Rue whispered, eventually tumbling backwards and back into his fathers forelegs. Even still the colt kept a widespread grin across his maw.
"Rue 'sah bear an fesh and a big wing-a-ling thing too! Daddys turn, daddy's turn!"
"Alright, alright-" Ezriel compromised, sighing slightly as he lowered his head to n** and tug at his sons mane. "I'll tell you if you just...chill, okay?"
As the small colt gave a fervent nod, Ezriel glanced upwards as his maw opened slightly. But just as he did so it seemed that someone elses words seemed to take those of his owns place in a rather peculiar event. No- it wasn't some spell that came over him and nor was the stallion possesed; it seemed as if that someone had been lurking nearby and now had finally chosen to speak and make themself known.
Truth be told Ezriel had been glancing towards the older stallions direction when the unfamiliar yet, somehow, familiar scent was caught by the passing air current and breeze which had automatically registered as a warning to the mutant. Rather than making a row and chasing the other off, Ezriel had let him trudge closer rather surprised that his scent was rather strikingly familiar. Yet somewhere within the cogs of his mind and those repressed memories that familiarity became apparent and triggered a single name into his head: Eponine. Needless to say that even before the old stallion had begun to speak and believed that he was piecing the puzzles together to Ezriel and even Rue (that is if Rue could even comprehend what was going on which was highly unlikely in all honesty) the stallion was already sorting it out. He remembered Eponine once speaking briefly of her father, Twilight was it not, and of how he was a good stallion. But now it seemed as if those facts were to be put to the test and Ezriel couldn't help but grind his jowls slightly together.
It wasn't as if he didn't believe Eponine- no, the mare was rather genuine and never did seem to tell a lie yet from a past whose recollections were made up of those whom had no idea whom he was and spoke ill of him and his family and even challenged him seemed to still hold little faith in others. How could he possibley believe that this stallion wouldn't try to beat the s**t out of him for taking something which could never be returned to his daughter? For so long the world had thrown everything at him: from dealing with a father whose manipulation, hatred and lust had nearly caused him to lose his life, from losing the mare of his dreams to his father and now having to never stay in one place for fear that his own father could very well inflict harm into his son.
Both Ezriel and Rue had no choice but to be vagrants and keep their tracks hidden. They turned their backs on the world besides their own family; their only support system, their only safehaven and source of reason besides Tal.
Tal!
Even then the stallion seemed to wince at the thought of the unique and insightful mare. Damn! He needed to find her soon and confess to her about all of his emotions, thoughts and what he had gotten himself into. Strange enough she probably wasn't aware that he was a father. Well wouldn't that be interesting to see her reaction once she found out?
Turning his attention towards the older stallion, Ezriel's voidless orbs narrowed.
"I know of you, Twilight. Eponine has mentioned and spoken of you a few times," the younger stallion commented, flicking his tail in a nonchalant manner while Rue found himself staring with a slacked jaw at the unfamiliar stallion. "She says you are a good stallion, noble and honorable- I hope that for you to come here will prove that in whatever business you have with me and my son." Okay so not a great start but who could blame him? It was clear that he was a bit mistrustful and uncertain of what to think as Ezriel let a front, cloven hoof absent mindedly paw into the ground. So many times he had been conned into thinking that all was well and that no harm would come to him yet time after time it was he whom had to set the record straight and defend himself against those whose opinions and minds were engrossed about the rumors concerning his mother and Reaper's unexpected outcome.
Yet as Twilights conversation progressed, the mutant did seem to breathe a bit easier knowing that Eponine and Cassiel had returned to Twilights family (okay- well not really but it was good to hear that the two were safe) and felt a great burden shift from off of his tensed shoulders as the older stallion commented that he had a desire to meet Rue.
Well- this certainly would be a bit interesting especially while Rue was still staring at him like a zombie with a hint of drool trailing from the side of his maw.
Ezriel pursed his lips slightly, furrowing his crimson brows as he straightened out his head as a wave of crimson mane seemed to follow as well much like following the pull of the moon. A small smile curled on his lips, "Even ghosts cannot escape from what plauge these lands. Concerning my family and the likes I have a damn good reason to be elusive when it walks between the line of staying alive or becoming another goddamn victim to the Fallen." There was no need to go into detail or hint knowing that the older soquili was most likely oblivious to what he spoke of. Good. No one else needed to remind him about his father and the plauge which he had reaped upon the lands or of the crime he had committed against his mother; the way which he and his siblings were created and born from.
Already his emotions were riled and Ezriel knew that he was being a bit- well, a bit defensive and a bit mistrusting of the stallion. It was clear to himself and most likely Twilight as well. It was something that had to be worked at. Ezriel's trust simply wasn't handed over nor given to many as such a thing had to be earned. Not even family were exempt from it.
The stallion gave a solid nod to Twilights inquiry of his name and remained silent yet unfortunately such silence never lasted long.
While daddy and the strange big stallion had been talking, Rue had been staring in awe and randomly at the unfamiliar thing. His voidless orbs went wide as his tail had begun swishing and swaying around like that of an excited and exhilarated puppy, not knowing what to do first with such happiness! Should he shout? Run around? Go tug at his long, long, loooooong tail or slobber him with kisses?
So many options all at once!
Finally as there was silence between the two stallions, Rue intook a deep breath and decided.
"BIG THIN' RUES GRAAAAWNPAAAAW? RUE HAS 'NOTHER GRAAAWNPAWWW? GRAAAWNPAWWW WUN' EAT RUE LIKE OTHER GRAAWNPAAW?" The projection of his voice seemed to echo within the small valley as birds seemed to become distressed from such a loud, unexpected noise and flee from their perches and homes nestled within the trees while one could have sworn that dead silence followed after with only one or two crickets brave enough to chirp with somewhat of a hesitation. But even still Rue slinked up to his hooves, creeping closer towards the older stallion with a shifting movement.
Curiosity had certainly taken a hold of the little colt as he made his way over towards the stallion although managed to take a quick detour to the very, very long tail that seemed to trail upon the ground. Unable to help himself, Rue pranced closer and took a few strands in his maw and began to tug at it.
But didn't the big thing ask him a question? Oh yes. What was it! It had something to do with clouds, and clouds and-
Rue gasped suddenly and gave a lopsided grin, somewhat slobbering over his grandfathers tai. "Rue 'sah a bunny, an' a beaaaar, an feeesh and a big win-a-ling thin' wid reaaaaally, reallly big feathers! REALLY, REAALLY BIG!" Continuing to tug on Twilights tail, Rue began to sway back and forth as his mind seemed to, once again, become consumed by his own fantasy and surreal outlook on life which was always sunshine, bunnies, a happy sun and and assortment of singing forest creatures as well as flowers. The colt giggled to himself.
Yes.
Everything was always happy and pleasent in Rues world and as well in the world around him.
