"H-hey! Come back here!" Michael called after Ophiera, who was running at break-neck speed towards the maze. "We have to go in together - remember what mom said about being alone?"

It didn't stop the little girl, though. What did stop her was a slightly-raised flagstone. She went tumbling to the ground, letting out the mimicry of a loud cry, though there was no sound.

Michael sped up his jog until he was right by her, muttering under his breath. He knelt beside her, checking her hands and knees for bumps and scrapes. Except for a small, bloodless scratch on one knee, she was fine. He sat back, sighing. "See? Don't go running ahead like that."

"You don't learn anything if you let someone else lead the way for you." Murmured a soothing and soft voice, a face peering out from a hedge as green eyes blinked. Whatever was talking seemed to blend in perfectly, not wishing to reveal 'itself' just yet, but watching the two interact. Others were so peculiar to her, and she wanted to learn so much, and was ever so patient in doing just that.

Michael blinked, then slowly turned his head to look in the direction of the voice. Seeing just a hedge, he blinked again, frowning. "If I had known she was going to run off," he muttered, crossly, looking back down at Ophiera, "I wouldn't have set her on the ground."

Ophiera was pouting, but it was a distracted pout - her eyes were still focused on the hedge. She got up, slowly, toddling past Michael - who sighed and gave up for the moment - and over to the bush.

She couldn't see anybody, but she waved all the same, mouthing 'Hello!'

Tilting her head curiously, Dia stepped out and peered at the other girl curiously, silent for a long moment. Finally she asked, "She can't speak?" Dia mimicked the wave and smiled slightly, her bare toes digging into the earth. Idly, she wondered what the others were like.

Ophiera shook her head, but smiled and ran over to the other girl. It had sounded like a girl! Though her words were so well put together for being so small. Ophiera envied that. Even when she put letters together on paper, it never sounded so adult-like.

"No, she can't," Michael replied, as if Ophiera's wordless response wasn't enough. He rose to his feet, moving a bit closer, protectively. "You don't have somebody looking out for you....?"

Dia tilted her head at him with a quizzical look, as if it was the oddest question in the world that she had ever heard. "The only one to look out for... is yourself." She gazed at him with stoic eyes, not at all disturbed by his close proximity, her fingers curling just slightly as she took a breath in.

Dia's green eyes turned to stare at Ophiera with a curious look now. She didn't even bother to acknowledge the other. "... name?"

Michael sighed, not bothering to point out that the girl was Ophiera's age and rather tiny. This was just ridiculous. He threw up his hands, reaching out for Ophiera.

Ophiera, though, just came closer, until she was next to Dia, then turned around, so that she was facing Michael. Then she dropped to her knees and began to trace out her name in the dirt, tongue sticking out as she worked at remembering letters. She was getting better, though, and now it only took a moment's thought to spell out

'OpHiEra'.

Smiling for the first time that day, Dia knelt next to the other and breathed out. "Ophiera. .... Era." She murmured softly, before tracing her own name in the dirt, 'Dia'. She then drew a flower next to Ophiera's name, leaning back and glancing at the hedges, then at Michael as if to challenge him, though she moved not a muscle.

"It is nice to meet you, Ophiera." She wasn't about to call the other by her newfound nickname, as they hadn't known each other that long. Though Dia wouldn't object to such a thought, or such a prospect in the near future.

Ophiera mouthed 'Dia' and then 'Era'. She liked the nickname, she decided. And as she couldn't say it, she would have to get Dia to say it again later.

Michael watched on, frustrated - how could such a little girl be so self-possessed and... arrogant? - but stayed where he was, crossing his arms.

Ophiera, on the other hand, responded to Dia's statement by grinning and hugging the other girl. She still had yet to absorb the idea that touching strangers was... perhaps not the best idea.

Unsure how to respond at all, Dia finally returned the hug after a moment, taking the time to run her fingers through Ophiera's hair. It was smooth and fine, unlike hers which was coarse and matted together a little bit, with little loose strands here and there. It was such a pretty black color, too.

Hugs seemed rather nice. Clock had insisted on them, as well. If this made Ophiera happy, Dia wasn't about to complain or protest against it.

Ophiera smiled happily at the attention, pressing her cheek to Dia's for a moment before she let go, clapping excitedly. She enjoyed hugging quite a bit, and was always happy to be close enough to somebody that she could feel their warmth. It was a simple pleasure, fit for such a simple, innocent girl.

Michael cleared his throat. "We should be getting back home," he commented, pointedly.

Ophiera shook her head, quickly looping her arms around Dia's neck. She wanted to make better friends with the girl from the maze, after all. And Michael probably wouldn't let her take Dia home with her.

Tilting her head, Dia watched them with silence, giving a smile to Ophiera. She reached up and slid gentle fingers through the other's black hair, not wanting the other to get into trouble for her actions; if she had to go, she had to go.

Michael looked disapprovingly at Dia for a moment, then sighed, giving in. How could he resist how cute Ophiera was being, clinging to the other girl? Still, he was a little unsettled by how quickly Dia had taken to sort of... petting his daughter. Was that natural for little girls their age?

"Fine, fine. But you two have to stay within sight, okay? No running off again."

Ophiera nodded, smile quickly reappearing. She bounced a little, happily, snuggling Dia's cheek before letting go once more, holding out her hand.

Blinking, Dia seemed to relax after the other let go, and gave a curious look to the other when she held out her hand. Hesitantly, she held out her own and shifted her eyes away, not entirely comfortable with that, but not knowing why.

Ophiera happily took Dia's hand, curling her fingers around Dia's and tugging her in the direction of Michael. When they got closer, she held out her hand, mouthed 'chalk', and smiled winningly.

Michael dutifully sighed and got out the two pieces of colored chalk he'd brought with him, putting them in Ophiera's open hand.

A few seconds later, she'd dragged Dia over to a big open flagstone and plopped down near it, holding out a piece of green chalk.
