Actually I wonder if the Olympics don't make it worse...all that competition between countries anymore.

Eh...I don't think that's true...sports competitions won't stop total war if it happens.
The Olymics unite people, not politicians. It is not people that fight or hate each other, it is politicians who instill fear and hate. That's why they can't do anything about wars.

Skizio you're right. But it seems as if, for generations the olympics have united all countries in one common element, giving us a friendly competitiveness, rather than our usual cut-throat manner. Now the u.s. is suggesting boycotting the olympics because, i'm guessing, it's in china, and since china is communist, we can't allow an international game stressed .

I think it's a nationalistic event, not very unified actually...

I don’t know if the Olympics help at all, but I like to think they do. I don’t buy into that togetherness and friendship the games are supposed to instill. What I do know is that everyone, even those that don’t like the games, enjoys seeing the final scores. It’s another way to “blow out steam”. Since there are so many events it ends up being like “rock, paper, scissors”. “They think they are pretty strong, but look at their results, even ‘C’ kicked their asses”, “So they won in A, but we totally own them in B”. Different countries have different strong’s and weaknesses. Perhaps a little respect is won during the games, who knows? In the time of the Greeks, the Olympic games where a time of peace even.

humans are naturally competitive and i think that it's better to compete in a series of events instead just fighting it off. i don't know why but events like the olympics and the world cup are the only thing that get me interested in sports.
