Cloë slowly walked through the high grass of Nightshade Valley. Even though a sliver of moon overhead hid her bright colors, every insignificant sound frightened the little chinua. Something rustled the bushes nearby. Cloë bent low to the ground and held very still. Please don't be something hungry.

Sudi yawned as he stretched, arching his back until he heard a little pop. He hadn't meant to fall asleep in the middle of the day. To his surprise, he had slept right past the sunset. The sky above was dark with sparkling stars dotting its inky black backdrop. He took a look around, and with a frown, he realized he wasn't quite sure where he was.
"Maybe it was this way..." he murmured in thought as he trotted off through a bush, making leaves rustle.

Trembling, Cloë watched something emerge from the bushes and into a patch of moonlight. Her eyes grew wide at the sight of another chinua.
Hey, he looks like me.
She stood up, cautiously, not wanting to startle him.
"Um." Cloë cleared her throat. "Hello?"

Stepping out of the bush, Sudi blew a puff of air at his nose. A leaf flew up and drifted back down to land right above his middle eye. He shook his head, finally ridding himself of the leaf.
A sound made his ear twitch. He looked around until his gaze landed on another Chinua. "Hello there," he greeted, surprised to find another.

Cloë blinked. "Hello," she said. She tried to look confident: pointed her ears forward, lifted her tail, stood tall. She might have succeeded if she had kept her concentration on speaking calmly.
"I-I'm n-not afraid o-of you."
As soon as the words were out, Cloë ducked her head. Why do I always have to stutter.

Sudi blinked and tilted his head to the side, almost wanting to chuckle at the stuttered statement. "Afraid of me?" he asked, genuinely confused. "Why ever would you be afraid of me?" He stepped forward and looked her over before his manners got the better of him. Bowing his head to her, he introduced himself, "I am Sudi."

Cloë's face burned almost to a pink glow as he looked at her. Her confidence sparked when she realized that she hadn't backed away from his approach.
"I-I.." She tried again. "I-I'm..." Her reply faded into a mumble. Cloë sank further into the grass, the spark of confidence gone.

Sudi leaned closer, trying to catch the fading whisper of her voice. "I beg your pardon? I didn't catch your name." He stared at her, waiting patiently for her reply.

She looked up at him, then closed her eyes concentrating on forming the words. "My name is Cloë."
She opened one eye at a time. Over his shoulder, a small moving glow caught her attention. It was a few yards away and steadily moving farther.
"Firefly!" Cloë jumped up and ran toward it.

"It's nice-" Sudi quickly stumbled off to the side as Cloë went running after something. Turning around, he blinked as he watched her chase the firefly. He blinked a few more times in confusion over her sudden change in mood.

Cloë jumped after the firefly as it zipped around the patches of tall grass. Dashing ahead of the little glowing bug, she stopped and held very still.
The firefly zig-zagged toward her. It landed on her nose, making her eyes cross. Omp. With a swift lift of her head, Cloë snapped her jaws around the firefly.
"Blek!" Cloë spit it out and watched it disappear into the sky among the sea of sparkling stars.
