Do you use earplugs when you play stuff with really high notes in it? I've heard it can damage hearing, so I always do for anything above a high E.

If the drumline hasn't gone deaf by their senior year, you're not going to from playing piccolo. You should be more concerned the size and average sound volume of the ensemble you play with. If they're loud enough that you're worried about hearing loss (which is common in professional musicians and life-long marching band members, especially), you can invest around $150 in a pair of medical earplugs by speaking to your doctor and probably getting a referral to an ear and hearing specialist. It's not exactly critical if your a school-age musician unless your band is enormous though.

i only use ear pluggs to train my flute section for state finals... we play or really played in a huge air lock dome where in certain spo...ts you couldnt hear the person right next to you so during practice i make my girls wear ear pluggs so they can stop listening around them and watch the dm and feel the drum beat....
but now if you have a guy in your section that can play the piccalo with suck air support that he actually plays over the who entire marching band in cluding pit and you have to march next to him then i recomend getting one ear plugg...on the side where he marches... personal experience...

i'm a flute player at heart and i love the Flute. i personaly want to move to Alto flute! if you like the low pitched sounds that are more well not like a piccalo and won't rip your ears out, then i would go to that for concert and stay with flute for marching.
Plus that will help balance wise in both bands. but alto flutes a hard to find music for i think. i really want to switch to that cause all senoirs have to play a piccalo at my school and i already have hearing problems. gonk so i think you should think about that.

lol I just got my piccolo and I havent had any problems with my hearing yet. I don't wear earplugs cuz they would get in the way our band director tells us that we need to listen to the others around us to know if we are playing too loud but I'm the only piccolo so I have to play loud
