The sea was calm for the time being, the skies were friendly. It was a perfect day for his first official sail on board the Queen Anne. Tannis sighed and hauled himself on top of one of the pillars closest to him. He'd gotten into a row with his mother again, and thankfully his father, Alvin, wasn't home to make things worse. He loved his mother, but at times she was so overbearing. Though he couldn't blame her, she was loosing both of her boys to the sea at the same time.

He straightened from his hunched over position and shaded his eyes against the glare of the sunlight.

Calm was the sea and skies that day for certain, but so were the footsteps upon the ground traversing toward Tanis from behind. Carefully they trod, avoiding the more loose sections of ground that could give and make sound of their coming to the sitter.

When the feet were close enough to the pillar, they stopped and then the hands began to move. Slowly they raised up in the air. Making a sudden move too early and the motion would be noticed. Too late and they wouldn't be quick enough to grab the target.

The hands reached the halfway point in the air and paused almost as if time had slowed down on them briefly... until one hand quickly shot to cover Tanis's mouth while the other attempted to wrap the other arm around Tanis's upper torso to possibly prevent at least one of Tanis's arms from flailing out at him.

He was no fighter, but he knew that who ever it was that held him knew, somewhat, what they were doing when they grabbed him. His heart pounded in his throat, choking him even as he thrashed. A tiny part of his consciousness told him not to try to escape by leaning forward, because that would throw him off the pier.

Tanis knew that his eyes had to be bright with fright, even as he managed to hook his boot-tip around his attackers ankle. One twist would either send them both tumbling to the ground, or would just unbalance them both enough so that he might be able to wiggle free. Or just cinch his capture.

That tiny part of his brain gave his attacker kudos for attacking him in broad daylight, on the docks filled with workers.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," a tenor voice said from behind Tanis toward his left ear. In order to keep either of them from falling, the attacker had to switch the weight on his feet and lean a little into the pillar as he felt more so than saw the end of Tanis's leg catch one of his heels.

"It's just me, Tanis," Allan said, his face fighting between concentration and a large grin. Slowly he loosened his grip on his younger brother, afraid that if he let go too fast, Tanis would flail either one of them into the ground. Injury wasn't on either brothers' agendas for today after all, but if they were to topple over, Allan was prepared to tip the fall backwards, ready to take the hit if it was to come.

Tanis stilled almost at once at the sound of the voice, rather then the words. "...Allen?" He asked, his voice pitched a bit high as he tried to reign in his fear. He could feel his muscles trembling with the effort not to do something stupid.

Like topple them both into the sea.

He turned a bit and craned his neck around to scowl at Allen. "The hell was that for!" He bit out, blinking away the faint tinge of tears from his vision.

"Since when have I had to explain this sort of thing?" Allan said with a slight shrug of his shoulders, still grinning as he carefully let go of Tanis and stepped back to give his brother some room. "In reality though, I blame the carriage ride. You can't do anything in those boxes other than bounce around."

Seeing Tanis shaken, Allan sighed and stretched out a hand to him. "Sorry about the fright. Come on and let's go find something to eat," he said as the grin softened.

"I want sweet bread." Tanis replied, sulking only minimally as he took Allen's hand. "And you're buying!"

He scrubbed at a cheek with his palm and glowered at the ground, "I thought I was going to get mugged or something." He muttered, following his brother in a fashion similar to when they were younger.

He hadn't dropped his brothers hand yet either.

"As usual," Allan replied at the mention of sweet bread and buying, resolved to the issue after some odd years.

After a few paces, Allan tugged on his brother's arm to move him up beside him instead of having him trail behind. With a slight move, Allan then moved to slip his hand from Tanis's hold and place it on the young man's back as they continued to walk in the direction of a nearby eatery. If it had still been younger days, the two of them would have run down the street hand in hand laughing most likely. Now though, in public it felt odd to Allan at their current ages, particularly when passerbys on the street would give funny little looks.

It made him long for the good ol'days when the two of them were more carefree... or at least when Allan felt more carefree.

He looked over at his brother for a moment as the eatery came into view. When they reached it, Allan opened and held open the door for Tanis.

"Why don't you pick out a spot for us to sit while I find out what this place serves. I'm famished," Allan said, standing beside the door.

Tanis absently noted the removal of his brothers hand and smiled a sad smile. Times were changing, they were no longer the carefree children they once were. He felt Allen's hand settle in the middle of his back and wondered how he would cope without the comforting presence his brother held. Or rather, how he would cope with the knowledge that it could be years before he saw his brother again.

He mentally shook such depressing thoughts away and grinned. "I don't know, remember last time you let me choose where to sit? We ended up the closest to the kitchen. I thought we'd starve to death with all those tantalizing scents coming out before we were served."

He glanced at the eateries name, noted that it was someplace new, and walked in, knowing his brother would probably be at his heels following him.

"But it made the food taste all the better when we got it though," he answered before heading to the counter.

"Well, hopefully you still like the same foods since last time," Allan said as he walked back toward Tanis. Since he'd been away for his apprenticeship, he'd been visiting home less often, though it never really bothered him. Home wasn't going anywhere after all. With Tanis going off to the military, it was the first time that would change since his father was a sailor, bless his soul.

"The food's been ordered. Find a table yet?" Allan asked, looking around the room at the seats.
