User ImageWhere did the time go?

As his hoof sunk into the mud, the stallion fought the urge to giggle like a boy. The muck gathered by the riverside was soft and unstable- when he pulled his leg away it made a gross and funny sound. Teagan grinned to himself, studying the resulting print after he'd finished his moment of simple humor. It seemed only a week or so ago that it had been a fourth this size. He could roll in the bank without ever getting wet.

And there was always mud sculptures. He thought he missed those the most.

Where had his childhood gone? He almost felt as if a great injustice had been done to him. Pushing the muck around with his hoof, the stallion completely forgot what he had originally come down to the river for, making a small pile while he mused. He should construct an ode or some such, and find his siblings so he could share. At least Soliloquy seemed to appreciate his creativeness.

Sadiki picked her way carefully though the mud, each step accompanied by a moment of breathless anticipation. She had grown to adulthood only recently, and was still feeling awkward in her large body. Her tail, normally trailing behind her with an effortless grace, was dragging through the mud. It's ivory hue was being slowly but surely stained to a muddy brown.

Sadiki couldn't have cared less.

Her caution was due to her dislike of slipping through any wet substance, not a desire to remain spotlessly clean. The last time she had slipped while careening joyfully through a muddy bank, she had rolled down a steep incline and plopped right into the chilly lake. It had not been a pleasing experience, to say the least.

A soft sigh escaped through her half-parted lips. She had escaped the watchful eye of her elder brother for this first time in many days, and was quite determined to enjoy herself.

... as soon as she got out of this mud.

A slow hum had began to manifest in his throat, a tune that took up a new tempo or pattern as he continuously tinkered with it. He was piling mud with slow and carefree motions, slapping it down lightly with his hoof every now and then to even it up. What was he making? He had no idea, but he'd figure it out once it was finished.

The sound of squishing mud soon found is ears, the urge to laugh coming to him once more. Such a funny sound! Golden eyes swiveled away from his project momentarily to seek the source of the sound, finding nothing to either of his sides. Had the river been playing a trick on him? Perhaps a sink hole was being created...

But as he decided to look across the thin river, he found what he sought. There was a mare there, picking her way carefully along the muddy shore. Teagan was taken aback for a moment. He hadn't been in contact with many others of his kind, though not by any fault of his own. Seeing her caused some panic within the male, a sort of shyness that struck him silent. His project forgotten for the moment, all he could do was stare across the small stretch of water to the female. Surely he should greet her, and propose a fine day, but the poet was tongue-tied for the moment. Sad- she might go on not noticing him if he did not say anything, as she seemed absorbed in what she was doing.

Sadiki paused, ears swiveling to and fro as she sought for the noises that may betray another's presence. She had left deep tracks in the mud, easy enough for any determined mind to follow... and what was her brother, if not determined?

Hearing nothing, she scanned the area about her with a scrutinizing attention to detail. If her brother was near, he may be lurking behind some tree or bush, waiting for her to continue on so that he might jump out and scare her.

Her soft grey eyes wandered over the form of a large purple stallion, and she let out an inward groan. Perhaps it had been too much to ask, for him to not notice her absence and come tearing after her with rescue on his mind. He was being unusually still though... and he had strange... Oh.

The sudden rush of joy caused a smile to bloom upon her features. It wasn't Konu! This stallion was too vividly purple to be her brother, and he seemed to be of Unicorn decent. Definitely not her brother.

She called out to him, her voice ringing pure and true. "Hello there, kind stranger! I must admit that I am pleased to see you, for I half-expected my brother to be around the next bend." She eyed the thin river, looking for a place to cross.

The though that he may not be as eager for her company as she was for his never crossed her mind.

When the mare looked his way, the Unicorn froze even more solidly than he had previously been. Would it be so ridiculous to see such a robust stallion turn heel and run? Teagan shifted debatingly, thinking himself not ready for this sort of contact, and found himself held fast by something thick. He had stood still too long and his forelegs and sank into the mud. He'd be able to free himself with a good jerk, but it was enough now to keep him from fleeing easily.

She was addressing him now, and it sent his mind churning for a moment. Now it would be just rude not to talk back.

"L-Lilac flower d-drifts
Down river shallow waters
M-mind the rocky depth"

Right.

The stallions stammers caught her by surprise. It was not often that she heard one of the 'stronger gender' falter, whether in speech or movement.

"That is quite clever." she murmured, as she started off on her chosen path. There was a shallow spot just to her left, where the stream thinned to a bare trickle. In only a few strides, she was across, considerably closer to the deep purple stallion.

"Is it of your own making?" Sadiki smiled, the corners of her mouth turned upwards in silent question. She had met those who had composed their own works, and those who only quoted from others. Which would this stallion be?

She gasped, having caught herself thinking of him as 'this stallion.' She did not know his name! If her father, or her elder brother, caught her failing to observe the niceties of common courtesy... "I am called Sadiki. May I have the pleasure of knowing your name?" ... she would have even more reason to wish to be away from their stifling presence.

She was being more than friendly so far, so what was it that made him feel so... petrified? The male swallowed hard, his eyes flickering away and downstream for a moment while he urged himself to relax. Slowly, he reply

"I have yet to find
another kind..."

What a question! He really hadn't, though it sparked questions in his mind. This was how he spoke! Were there any more that were like him?

"T-tentative Teagan, thank you. Salutations, Sadiki..." He would bow his head slightly to her, white-violet locks falling everywhere. His knees politely bent as well... which coincidentally put him father into the mud. Gasping quietly to himself, he attempted to pull one of his forelegs free. Sheepishly, ears lowering slightly, he made a soft noise of apology when his leg made a gross sound when freeing itself from the mud.
