Do you play a musical instrument? Which one(s)? If you sing, what's your voice range? How long have you been playing and why did you start on what you play?
What are your favorite instruments? (not necessarily ones that you play) What do you wish you could play, or hope to take up someday?
What make is your instrument?

...and anything else that you can think of to talk about.

Things I wish I could play....

Guitar, bass(hell, electric & double bass), saxophone, piano, flute, drums, and possibly singing.

Things I own...two guitars.

EDIT: And I also wish I could play cello.

I play the trumpet, French Horn, and a bit of baritone, and I'm also learning the electric bass guitar. domokun I've been playing the trumpet for four years, and the French Horn for about 5 months or so. ninja I soooo pwn the older, more experienced Frenchies at the marching French Horn. I'd have to say my favorite instruments are the French Horn, trumpet, cello, and all kinds of basses. I want to learn how to play a cello someday. ninja Cellos are awesome. gonk heart I wish my school would teach us how to play stringed instruments. I would've chosen either a violin or a cello instead of my purty/dented/rusty/oily/evil trumpet. gonk *sob* Ooo...this has gotta be the biggest post I've ever made. ninja My trumpet is Besson, bass= Ibanez, and the school horn= Mercedes Vincent Bach or something long like that. Oh, yeah. I also have a pair of drumsticks and no drum. ninja I'm not telling why. My post'll get too big and confusing.

Instruments I play: Piano, Violin, Oragn, Barritone Horn (in trebble clef), and percussion.

Instrument I wish to play: Oboe

Voice: I am recovering from sever larengitis, so right now, my range is limited...however, once I am back to my prime (which is just a matter of time), my range is a low E below middle C to a High A, two octaves above middle C (I can go higher, but it doesn't sound nice...the highest note I've hit is another A 2 octaves higher then that...) ^^;;;

I''ve been trying to play the cello for at least seven years now. I''m not as good as I should be because I don''t practice enough sweatdrop My cello came from the Doestch shop (luthier? studio?) and it''s a warm dark red-brown color.

(Yes, I''m one of Those People who insists on saying just "horn" instead of "French horn.") Why do I like horn music so much? Long story... (I can name more great horn players than great cello players. Yeah, weird.)

I wish I could play horn, guitar, piano (well, keyboard is part of Music Theory class anyway), and electric bass.

My least favorite instrument is the harpsichord. I just don''t like the twangy clangy sound.

Strangely enough I''m listening to a compilation disc on harpsichords right now...(it's part of a 10 disc "the instruments of classical music" set)

I play the violin, bartione horn, and piano.... I can not remember my voice range although it is better than most boys my age.... My favorite instruments are violin, organ, and oboe... I wish I could play the second two... I would like to create the fife-piccolo which will be half fife hald piccolo... my grand piano is Diapason, my horn and violin are Wexler... I love playing the violin because it reads treble cleff and is only one line of music to think about...

biggrin

I usually only talk about playing piano and organ. I love these two instruments to pieces. I really like harpsichord, but I don't think having one would increase my musical pallette all that well. I prefer listening to Bach on harpsichord [compared to piano], but otherwise, it just doesn't suit my transcendental 'theme'.

I've also played guitar, bass, and chapman stick for whatever reasons. I got too good at them too quickly, and it got really boring after a while, which was my inspiration for moving to organ. There are a lot of good guitarists out there. I could have played for twenty years and still been just as good as the rest of those that had played for twenty years. Of course, the narcissist in me would suggest that my technical ability [particularly tapping] was close to, if not better than, the standard.

Piano and organ are fantastically transcendental, though. You can create raw emotion- and any emotion you like. And they just seem that little bit less superficial.

Thats about it really. I enjoy writing for every instrument- horn, strings, percussion, whatever. I'd really love to learn viol d'amore, because I imagine that the sound and expression would be orgasmic.

I wish I could study organ in Paris. Random information.

yes, piano. i sing soprano. ive been playing for i think 2-3 years. my favorite instrument is the piano. i love everything about it. i wish i could also play the guitar, and maybe the flute or piccolo. my piano is a 1984 wurlitzer console. i heard once that pianos are like wine, they get better with age. wink

Actually, that is associated with every wood containing instrument except keyboard instruments (though I myself think keyboard instruments, as long as kept in good condition, become better with age too).
it has to do with the strengthening of the wood with age (it becomes denser) dampening the vibrations. This is why Violin makers use at least 30 year old wood to make masterwork Violins. I believe it has the same effect as pianos but in pianos the wood often rots from moisture and bad handling.

Yay!

I'm a horn player! (But I'm not one of Those People. Although I can be, depending on my mood.)

I think horn people like cellos and vice versa. I'm going to teach my first born to play the cello. He/she is going to be a freaking prodigy!!

I have it all planned out.

CET42's crazy child-prodigy method.

I'm going to get them a cello when they're four, and get myself one, too. Then I will take lessons and teach them what I like that the teacher teaches me, along with lots of other stuff, like physics for four-year-olds.
And they will never have tapes for their fingers on their cello. I'm going to ear-train them at the piano, because ear-training is SO important! (I'll play a note. "Here, little johnny, find this note on your cello!")
And I'm going to ear-train intervals into their head. They'll sit backwards and I will play them an interval on the piano. They have to guess what it is. I'm going to do them backwards, too, because I currently can't get backwards intervals just by hearing them.
Forwards are okay, but backwards...no.

Once they have the basics down (although I may have to pull in an outside teacher to teach them hand position, I'm realizing), I'll start teaching them like Yo-yo Ma's dad did -- he learned one measure of the Bach cello suites each day. In a couple of months, he
could play a complete cello suite.

Next stop...carnegie hall! (Just kidding.)

Variables: do they have perfect pitch? I sure hope so, although apparently it's genetic and I don't know of anyone in my family with it.

xd Nice plan...but what if the kid doesn't WANT to play cello?

Forced lessons can kill the urge for classical music of any kind in a kid, and the whole "prodigy" thing can certainly have...un-desired affects upon them emotionally. xp However, I'm sure that you knew this already and are just ranting.

It's not totally genetic and everyone has about the same potential as the genetic ones, though it will be harder to train and would fade if they neglect the musical field.

I'm going to do just the same with my kids. razz

I was just ranting... however, nothing really seems "forced" if it's appealing enough. So I'll just make playing the cello seem really appealing to my kid.
