Laura watched her daughter from a cluster of long, sloping beach chairs, built from wide, brightly colored plastic strips. Hers was a nauseating shade of yellow, and far enough from the pool that it hadn't yet been splashed or sat upon by wet children. She leaned back on it, enjoying the heat in the room and feeling far more relaxed than any parent had a right to be at the pool.

Naida, who had immediately dumped her coat into a crumpled heap and demanded to be taken to the water, was having a grand time. The pool was much bigger and warmer than the bathtub at home, and she happily bobbed on the surface of the water, wriggling her tail and trying to learn what to do with the movement that resulted. Swimming was a tricky thing - trickier still because she couldn't breathe the pool water, it burned and smarted going down, and because there were so many children were blocking her - but she liked it, and she could move right in the water and not need to be carried everywhere.

She popped above the water again, grinning widely and shaking her hair so that it smacked her cheek and stuck to it. Humming something strange, most likely a mangled version of a nursery rhyme, she dove under the water, skimming the bumpy white bottom of the pool - not that she knew it was white just then, no, the water hurt her eyes and it was bad to open them - and came up for air again on the opposite side of the pool, heart skipping a joyous rhythm and her hair hanging in great heavy curtains around her.

"NO!" The ear piercing shriek was coming from a kicking struggling girl held in a viselike grip by a tall woman in a dark red bathing suit who seemed, generally speaking, to be disinterested in the girls frantic struggles. She walked forward, and the girl stumbled along next to her, tripping but never falling, as her hand stayed firmly held.

"No I won'!" Tansi continued to shout, all of a small child's fierce resentment in that cry. "I hate you, an' I hate wader..."

"Evident enough by how filthy you were when your father dropped you off, dear." Jane responded levelly, apparently accustom to Tansi's tantrums. "But you've had your bath, and now we're going swimming, or do you want all your cousins to laugh at you because you're afraid of the water?"

That caught her up short, her little bottom lip puckering out and quivering. "'m not ascared." She replied, temperamentally, no longer struggling though, in her awareness of the pointlessness of the activity.

"I'll believe that when I see it." And with that, she marched the young girl over to the steps that led into the shallow end. She did not, at least, throw her in. No she entered herself, actually releasing the little girl's hand. "I'm just going to wait here for you. And I won't believe your not afraid until I see you actually put your face in the water."

"'m not ascared!" A foot stamp to punctuate it, but she made no attempt to actually get in.

Owen wrinkled his nose as he entered the room containing the pool. A warm almost overwhelming wave of chlorine scent had wafted rather forcefully up his nostrils. The rabbit eden was not thrilled about that but he supposed it could be worse. His sense of smell was strong but his earing was better and while his ears filled with the sounds of shouts and cries of glee and fear as well as the splashing of many bodies in the water Owen had to admit that it wasn't as loud as he'd expected, somehow all the sounds seemed to blend together.

Cloaked only in a pair of dark blue swimming trunks he approached the shallow edge of the pool. Owen wasn't looking forward to getting chlorine on the fur of his ears for tail but he knew he had to. His father had insisted that gardening wasn't enough exercise for a kid his age and that learning to swim was a vital part of growing up.

Surveying the pool room and it's occupants as he walked Owen stopped short after a moment recognizing the hair of a small girl standing by the entrance to the shallow end . " Hi Tansi" He called out. Owen was a bit nervous of this he was much bigger than he had been since he'd last seen the pretty if bossy girl. What if she didn't remember him? What if she had gotten mean?

((Hope it's okay for me to toss them in ^^; ))

Plants liked water, didn't they? That was Qing's rationale when he decided to take his "little experiment" to a local pool. That and the fact that it was winter, and Aidan didn't seem to be enjoying the frosty outdoors. Pools had water, warmth, and as he found when they arrived, other kids!

"Rlook, Aidan! Rlots of kids forr you to prlay with!" Glancing at the parents sitting around the pool, Qing was glad he had decided to wear the two-piece suit, instead of the trunks Anandi had suggested. That was good for kids, maybe, put the parents were all wearing more covering suits. That meant that he was right!

Aidan wrinkled his nose at the smell of chlorine in the air. It wasn't that he'd never smelled funny chemicals before- Qing used them often in his experiments- but that didn't mean he had to like them. Even worse, Mei had heard that they were going someplace with water, and refused to come along. That almost made him change his mind too, but the promise of warmth was strong. Besides, he was curious.

When he saw the pool, his eyes widened, and he looked like he would have jumped in if Qing hadn't been holding his hand. Instead he just stared, tugging at his green swimming trunks and wondering how deep it was, and what he could do there... much less about the other kids. As soon as he was released, after promising to "be good," he walked quickly towards the edge of the pool and sat, dangling his legs in the warm water. That felt good.

After having finished her initial wild swimming and reacquainted herself with the pool, Naida bobbed easily on the water, watching the other children with mild interest. They were mostly loud and mostly ordinary, and seemed to be split between screams of joy and screams of fear, which was sort of puzzling and unpleasant to listen to. She frowned and dove back under the water, flicking her tail to propel herself along.

She had occupied herself with this for a few moments, weaving her way through a forest of legs like a - like an eel, she imagined, because she liked eels, they were funny - when a wall went and got in her way. Naida popped to the surface and shoved her hair out of her face, then blinked the chlorinated water out of her eyes before it got a chance to sting her.

There was, she noticed with sudden interest, a boy there, with red hair and green eyes, who smelled vaguely like flowers even over the thick, steamy scent of chlorine. She smiled at him agreeably, swishing her tail in the water.

"Hello," she said, because she figured it was the only polite thing to do when one had gone and popped up in front of someone.

That was her name! Footstamping forgotten at the promise of attention, Tansi turned her gaze away from Jane, and toward the speaker. It was... her face wrinkled into a frown as she tried to remember. She remembered him, or his ears anyway. He'd been shorter, before. She'd have to look up at him now. And she wouldn't be able to reach his ears! Oh no!

Still, it was a distraction, and something that meant maybe not getting in the water. So long as the bunny person stayed away from the trecherous liquid, no one could call her a coward for not wanting to get in. And she wasn't. She wasn't at all!

"Hi!" The response was a joyful singsong, and she waved enthusiastically from her spot. Moods were easy to cast aside, when the threat of the moment seemed avoidable. She'd rather think about him then water anyway. The others, she'd yet to notice, as they had yet to make an attempt to pay attention to her. And what else mattered, really?

Good, Tansi still remembered him, Owen had been worried that since it had been a while and since he was different she might have forgotten. The rabbit Eden reached her side and grinned " It's nice to see you again. " he frowned slightly " Too bad my camera isn't supposed to get wet, you'd make a nice picture." Not that Owen took the most spectacular of pictures as of yet, his lack of practice and skill was still apparent. Nevertheless he still liked to take pictures and to him Tansi looked interesting, especially her hair.

Not that he knew she had similar ideas but Owen thought along the same line as Tansi. The longer he talked to her the less time he had to spend in the strong smelling and slightly crowded pool. The boy knew he had to go in eventually, that he had to learn to swim but still putting it off for a few extra minutes wouldn't hurt.

Content that Aidan was behaving well enough, Qing found a chair a few feet away and tossed his towel over the back. He was planning on going in, of course, and if Aidan went in he had to as well anyway, but not yet. First he wanted to watch a little bit. He'd never been to a swimming pool before, though he'd heard of them a lot. This was as much a research project as anything else.

There were lots of people in the pool, but Aidan wasn't ready to go in yet. Nor was he particularly ready when a girl surfaced in front of him. Whoever she was, she looked like she was really good at swimming. Maybe she'd had a lot of practice, or something like that.

"Hello," he replied, and followed that up immediately with "How'd you do that so good?" Maybe she would tell him how she did it! Either way, the whole 'swimming' thing looked like fun.

Naida tilted her head, considering the question. Her mother had explained this to her before, she had said that she swum well 'for the same reason other kids walked well.' This didn't really make sense, but she couldn't think of another way of saying it beyond saying that her tail was like a fish's tail, which seemed unnecessarily obvious.

"I got water legs," she said at last, nodding to herself. "They're a tail." She wriggled said tail under the water, just in case he hadn't seen it.

"You c'n swim too," she added quickly, so he didn't feel left out. "People legs work too." Not as well, she thought, but she kept this to herself. People looked sort of funny when they swam, though; everything flailing around all crazy. It seemed dangerous, but she guessed that if it worked that was fine.

She looked around, absorbing the room with interest. There were some other children her age, who were mostly boring, but two other kids looked strange like her. She was intrigued for a moment, but they were busy with each other, and anyway she had a new friend to pay attention to now.

Yes, yes she would make a nice picture! She'd make the best picture ever, and she'd be a model, and everyone would love her. Wait... what were they talking about? She blinked at Owen in mild confusion for a moment, then summoned up her best charming smile.

"T'anks. You b'ing it nex' time." She instructed, with frank confidence and self interest. False modesty was not a concept she'd yet learned.

"'m asposed to go swim. I don' like wader though." Her attention moved away from the bunny boy then, skimming lightly over the surface and landing at least briefly on the girl with the fishing tail.

"She's a fish!" She spoke with a child's unrefined delight, pointing openly at the 'fish' in question, before turning back to Owen. "'m not a fish. I'm not made for wader."

Owen found Tansi just as bossy as before but he was slightly less intimidated now being older and bigger than the girl. it was also slightly charming with her and remained Owen of the way Rekha's kitten zephyr would demand attention and then stared at you with it's cute eyes like it was both innocent and king of the world at the same time.

" I promise next time I'll bring a water proof one"

He laughed softly at her comment on the strange girl who reminded him of a mermaid. " She might be a fish and meant for water but we can still try it." Owen didn't look forward to it but he knew he had to learn and Tansi might as well do it while she was still little as well. He pointed to a piece of bright purple foam floating on the water " I could get you a floating board so you feel better."

Personally Owen would feel better with a flotation device but he was really to big for anything short of a life jacket and those looked silly.
