Alright this is something that I have been wondering since the 8th grade. Is repenting for your sins a good thing? Yeah that may seem like a dumb question but seriously is it? A kid in my 8th grade science class would pick on me non-stop every single day. I told him that he was going against his beliefs and he said that it was okay because he would ask God for forgiveness and keep picking on me. So I ask you this is it okay to repent for your sins and keep doing those sins because you know you can repent for them later? I mean I know we only live once but come on? (side bar: I'm not talking about the kid pestering me, that's just an example. I'm talking about in general).

I hope this makes any sense.

repenting is good. but repenting for your sins not only means forgiveness for your sins but also a promise to try against your hardest not to commit it again. so for example, the kid that picked on you, didnt in a sense repent. since he picked on your nevertheless afterwards. to repent is to be sorry for what sins you commit and to promise never to commit them again.

and its not a stupid question. if you have a question you should voice it, its the only way to really grow as a Christian. that and being corrected, its the only way to really learn.

Yeah I realize that now. And one thing I do know that is hard on humanity is committment. I have heard read things on how people can't committ to their promises. So is it okay to keep making promises that you can't keep?

And thanks. I know that asking question not only helps you grow as a Christian but to grow as a successful individual. That's mainly why I was raised to question everything.

This is not a dumb question at all biggrin

Here is an actual definition of repent~
Acknowledge one's wrong and turn away from it.

Sin is a part of life, and we must accept that. However, when we repent, we get the grace and forgiveness of God, for he loves us so much! In fact, if you know you are sinning and continually sin intentionally, well, that's one of the worst things you can do, I think~ And infact, I have a problem with that to XD But, I ask God to help me to stop the sin, and he does biggrin

This kid that annoys you, I know you've probably heard it like... 80 billion times, but just ignore him. And pray to God to help you DEAL with him XD Hope it helps biggrin *I am in 8th grade to ~*

Hai. Yes I know to ignore people. I did at lunch to a friend who was bugging me and she threw a pencil at me to get my attention. And I might've not mentioned this but I'm a 17 year old senior...

Others have already given great answers but I wanted to insert my $.02 anyway.

When I was younger I was taught that repentance is literally a 180 degree turn. If you don't make an honest effort to correct the behavior then you haven't truly repented.

After typing the above I decided to check http://dictionary.reference.com for definitions of repent. Here are some excerpts:

  • to feel such sorrow for sin or fault as to be disposed to change one's life for the better.
  • To feel such regret for past conduct as to change one's mind regarding it.
  • To make a change for the better as a result of remorse or contrition for one's sins.
  • turn away from sin or do penitence.

The most instersting, I thought, was the definition of repent as it applies to the science of biology:

  • Creeping along the ground; prostrate.

That says a lot about the attitude that true repentance requires.

It does. The whole point of repentance is to turn around. Any good thing can be abused. Paul does that whole discussion of it in Romans 6-8. It's great, but it is meant to point us to God, not to give us license to keep sinning.

You do only live once. Why waste time, then, living in sin? Since we only live once, we ought to live our lives in a way that matters - one that honors God. Lifestyles of sin tend not to honor God.

Repentance is certainly a good thing. By definition, it almost embodies the Christian faith. To constantly repent from the sin of the world, and turn to Jesus as your savior, and as your guiding light.
(By the way, nice to see you somewhere aside from Loving Kindness, mazuac. wink )

let me put it this way...say you push someone on purpose, then you apologize, but then you do it again then apologize again. does it make it ok that the person keeps apologizing over and over if he's just gonna keep doing it? No. the point of repenting is that you try not to do it again, and if you do, then yes, repent but you go back to trying harder than you were before, not to do that. does that make sense? I don't know if it does sweatdrop

Repenting for your sins, then going back to your usual habits, would be as if you didn't recieve forgiveness in the first place. It's basically slapping the Lord in the face again and again and again. People who have a nasty habit of doing this, they may not realize it, but it means they believe their selfish desires are too important for a Being that has written their future in a book since before they were born. So you must ask those people who claim themselves as Christians, "Why do you continue with this? Do you think you're better than God?"

It deeply saddens me how much repentance is taken for granted in this day in age. If you're really looking forward to having a saved and prosperous soul, now's the time to embrace the love, as well as the fear of God, so that you may walk a straight and beautiful path. Christianity is NOT a light-hearted matter. It is a life-changing element. Life is but a vapor compared to eternity. So-called Christians need to quit following their own little philosophies and get it right... before they lose their eternal rewards.

I am to weep bitterly during days to come. God save us.

My pastor spoke on this a while ago. Hebrews 10:26-27

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

By the sound of it, your friend hasn't heard this verse. biblegateway.com is a good place to go if you need to find a passage quickly. I use it a lot.
