This is my first thread in the guild =]
I don't know if this is suppose to be in a sub forum or not. My apologies.

I bought a bell shaped skirt over the summer. The shape is enough to be lolita, but there are no ruffles/lace. The fabric is black with red and light blue flowers scattered throughout, with a bold white outline for the flowers- looks more waloli than anything else. At the moment, I'm shortening it by two inches, giving me quite a bit of extra fabric to make something. I'm a newbie to sewing so what can I do with this fabric other than making a headdress?

I've decided, that I will wear this to school tomorrow. I've been thinking of this all week. I'm going to wear the skirt with my simple black turtleneck and black flat mary janes. However, I'm very concerned about my legs. I've worn casual lolita to school once before and I used white knee socks with an all black outfit. However, I'm not sure with what to wear with this outfit. Would black knee socks on a mainly black outfit make the colors in my skirt look random? Would the white in my skirt be enough to make white knee socks "match" with the outfit? Would stockings of any color look frumpy- especially now that the length is noticeably higher than my knee caps? What about legwamers and stockings?

I wish I would post a pic to make it easier, but my camera is dead and refuses to be resurrected. In the meantime, I'll try to find similar pics online. Thank you for any suggestion, I appreciate it.

love,
a worried newbie lolita

Couple of questions:

1) How long is the skirt?
2) Does it fit at your natural waist or sit on your hips?
3) Could you find black fabric that matches it somewhere? You could use that and a bit of lace to add either a ruffle or a fancier edge for the skirt.

As for the other things you've said:

Legwarmers, while cute, are really hard to match to a lolita outfit, especially casual lolita. The way that they tend to end up slouchy and loose doesn't really fit the same aesthetics as the lolita shape of the skirt does. If they are just more or less socks without toes, I don't see a problem with them. If they're loose or baggy at all, though, they probably won't look "lolita" even if they do look cute. Does that make sense?

Either way, for a mostly black outfit, I'd go with black stockings or socks and shoes then wear jewelry with similar colors to the flower print as accents. Also, since you're new to sewing, I'd recommend not hacking up your skirt just yet. Experiment with scraps [you can find a remnants section in most fabric stores/departments] to learn how to make things before trying it out "for real."

Thank you spuntino! I have decided to wear black without leg warmers.

My skirt originally was over my whole knee. But I just finished shortening it (lol I read your post and was like, "um it's a little too late for me to stop now" o__o; ) But I'm not *that* much of a sewing newbie. I've taken a class on it at school, though never finished. Anyway, I just tried on the skirt and it's perfect length now- 2 inches over my knees, while at my natural waistline.

I don't think I'll ever be able to come across the same or even similar enough fabric. Though, I suppose adding some lace or other black fabric for ruffles would be more ideal any way. Thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe you could do a black ruffle with a bit of lace trim to accent it, then ribbons in a blue or pink to match the flowers? That'd probably be really cute.

Well black tights or white goes well.
Classic colors. I wouldnt dare experiment with other colors for tights unless you really know what you are doing.

Personally, when i cant decide what to wear for my legs, I would wear lace tights lol.

Sometimes I cant decide as well.

I think the combination you have is fine.
Hmmmm I wish there was a picture so I could say more. Im sure there is a lot to say especially since youre going to cut it.
Its always nice to wear a petticoat under....

But for now i really cant say much. Too bad your camera is busted sad

Unless its super cold i would recommend black knee-high socks instead of tights...and you could use the extra fabric from your skirt to make a mini top-hat! i think that would be super cute.

And as a response to your sock issue, I think it would be fine as long as your wearing a plain black blouse or, in your case, a turtleneck. as previously stated, find some nice jewelry, just like a necklace or earrings, to tie the skirt colors together 3nodding
