So...it's not exactly a secret in my family that I'm "different." My friends are weirdos xP, I listen to music that is a different language, I watch stuff on my computer that is in a different language, some of the boys I talk about to my friends can't even speak English (buttheyarehawt redface ), and ...I play DDR. Based on all of this, my family has concluded that I'm a "white girl." gonk In an effort to understand me better, my cousin will take me out for rides in her car and ask me what kind of music I listen to. Then she will turn to every non-rap and hip hop station and ask, "Do you like this?" I'm like, "Uhh...no...." When I used to play DDR in my house, my mother would watch me for awhile and then be amazed at my dancing skills. Then she would tell her friends, "My daughter is acting like a white girl jumping around to arrows." I always have to remind her: "MOMMY. DDR IS FROM JAPAN." My cousin once saw a picture of Subaru Sumeragi as my wallpaper on my phone and he said, "Eww, he looks gay." gonk Weeeeell, that's not very far from the truth but still...how could I explain that to a 13 year old? sweatdrop Since you all are on Gaia, I'm guessing you probably have some unique tastes than most of your family members. So how do they react to it?

My family thinks I'm weird.
When I'm at my computer listening to music, if someone walks into the room, I turn the sound off.

I LOVE playing DDR at home. Seems like there are always too many people waiting to phail at it when I go to the mall or the bowling alley. I just want to buy the arcade version and stick it in my basement. heart I'd be in heaven.

I've always been the special case of the family. xp Funky thoughts, not so outspoken and loud, collector of anime toys and wall scrolls...
Not to mention I'm a writer. It's my actions and opinions that confuse. I'm like, the hippie bohemian of the family and everyone else has society-approved plans and stuff. That, and I go around the house randomly singing anime themes... sweatdrop

I don't go for guys with platinum grills or 22's talk2hand There are people in my family that are in jail and/or gaudy trannies (notthatsitsbad) and I'm the weird one. Even though most of the people I was raised with were black. I still wanna be white. Or Japanese. Geez Louise. God forbid i wanna have my own interest/values different from theirs. Not to mention that I don't go to church.

He could care less about the hip lifestyle and my fam just looks him up and down 'cause he's a little different. I like him that way!! He stands out like a sore thumb and THANK GOD!! There are so many carbon copies of the same thing where I live. It's so irritating. I love being the strange one, though. I get some pretty good gifts. poetry books, art sets...)

My bf took me out and spent almost 100 on books for me, mostly manga. I was really happy about it, i told my friends and they were like, I shouldn't got some shoes or a purse. Which I care very little about. I like my back pack and chucks. silly me for liking to read.

Okay, you can like "non-black stuff" and still be black. You can like that stuff without wanting to be something else. Society is going to remind you that you're black no matter what music you listen to. The way I see it, black people are more entitled to like rock and stuff because our people created it anyway. I don't care about labels and styles because I do what I want and don't care what people think about it. I have my militant pro-black side and I can still stay up til 1 in the morning to watch anime too. My family knows the deal and they don't care because they're not stuck on being limited by stereotypes. Maybe because my parents grew up during the civil rights situation so they want us to have some diginty becasue they knew were we came from. I wasn't exposed to a self destructive lifestyle so they don't expect me to act like it.
About the man thing. I don't care what sucbulture or style he's into as long as it's not totally over the top. I have never dated and I keep my preferences to myself so people can't really complain about that. All I ask is that he be level headed, we get along, we're attracted to each other, and he treat me with love and respect. If he's a naruto fan boy, that's fine. If he wears locs and oversize hoodies that's fine too. The "oh I don't like that kind of black person" has a good ******/bad ****** vibe to me. I just like to remeber that all of us are a bad day away from being a "bad ******" (angry black woman, too militant, obnoxious or some stereotype).

Good God my family doesn't get me at all. Well besides my cousins and brother. Everyone in my family besides me are basically the stereotypical black crowd while I'm off listening to rock music (as well as whatever else is good...hip-hop, rap, pop, ect...), I hang out with ANY race, I don't blame things on race and I want my hair to be straight and not even for ethnic reasons or because I hate being black or something...I just want it straight. Usually when I'm around them, I just listen to what they would prefer or just...not be 'weird' around them. Kind of annoying.

My family thinks I'm weird for watching "those cartoons where people scream a lot" (dragonball Z) and "those shows with the crazy Asian people" (Ninja Warrior), reading "comic books" (manga), and having a preference for Asian men. Whatever, most are crazier than me and my true family still loves me for who I am. The rest can stop being to judgmental. wink

Oh, good God... I know exactly what you mean. My family doesn't try to generalize me, so much as they try to pick my brain without offending me- which they fail at a lot.
For instance, I like J-Rock/Pop and, as 21Chan had finely pointed out, a lot of those stars are... for lack of a better word, Feminine. When my family learned that I liked that kind of stuff, they totally got it wrong and thought I was gay. XD
But yeah, I have a lot of tastes that aren't considered "common" among African-Americans today. I like Japanese RPGs, foreign and classical music as well as Metal and Rock, have a soft spot for art (namely of the Renaissance to Baroque eras), and love to read fantasy novels. biggrin
So yes, I am quite different and have many more quirks than what I have listed here. biggrin
Running the risk of going off on a tangent here... am I the only one that is slightly irked that African-American culture today seems to be mostly associated with rap and hip-hop...?

Ehhh.
I dunno, I never got that much flak for my interests. Then again, I only see my family once every blue moon for at the most a few days xDDDD
My immediate family doesn't care much, either. My mom shakes her head and sighs every now and then at the things I draw/watch/listen to, and cries out to the lord to save her son and make him a might man of valor (lol?), but nothing more than that. It's possible I've just blocked her out, but eh.
Dad and sister just joke about it every now and then, but they don't try to dissuade me c: Even got the pops liking Naruto. The TV dub, but still.
