Nah, Sonic had a gene named after him. The gist of the article is that mutations in the Sonic hedgehog gene can lead to very negative results in a developing fetus, since it's so important to the development of the brain. The name of the actual disease seems to be "Holoprosencphaly (HPE) [which] is a congenital malformation of the head that results from the failure of the forebrain to divide properly into the mature regions of the brain." I'm afraid that's all I could get out of it, though, because I'm not a medical/biological science major. sweatdrop

If Sonic's a disease, many of us have at least mild colds... But seriously, I remember hearing about that the other year.

Back in my first year at university, a friend of mine doing biology and physics pointed this out to me. I noted that there wasn't a Mario gene listed in the textbook smile

Yes, it's a gene.
That story's been doing the rounds since I first got online seven years ago - it's still not all that well known, though.
