Two solitary figures stood atop the highest point of the mildly flat plateau, standing just before the sheer drop of the cliff down to the beach below. It wasn't much of a beach at the moment, not how they remembered it. Far below, the gray waters retracted, leaving debris scattered across the once-pure sand; dead sea creatures and ragged plants and sharp rocks. For a moment, a large strip of beach was visible, but it didn't last long. Swiftly the sea would close in again, slamming powerful waves onto the cliff wall, sending small vibrations through their hooves.

"It's so sad," she murmured.

"It is," he replied.

They continued to both stare at the crushing waves below them, neither blinking nor moving. They were so alike, yet different: Alike in rainbow markings, alike in height, alike in look and interests and ideas; different in color, different in gender, different in mane-length and style and eye color. Tied to each other at birth, the rainbow-marked twins continued to stare down at the water as the wind blew fiercely, sending her curly locks towards her brother and almost touching him, but the perfect curls were too short. His lengthy mane blew as well, though it was too long and heavy for the wind to catch as well as it did his sister's. He didn't mind, though, and neither did she, as they both stared at the place they'd gone to with their friend, neither hardly believing the sight they beheld compared to the placid sea and beautiful sky they'd seen in their foalhood. They didn't know how much the winter storm could change the beach and sea they'd known in spring and summer.

A black figure stood on a lower point of the plateau, her dark eyes watching as the icy fingers of the winter spirits taint this once pure land of warmth and laughter. Distant clouds formed on the horizen as the sky faded from a glamous blue to a soft but bleak grey.

"To see the dreams of youth fade by the a single whim of the gods...Tis the curse that we have been given during our mortal lives. Yet....."

Lifting her head, her cropped mane wavered in the cold wind that blew off the salty waters. She had never seen the ocean before this day...yet, she knew that this was a place not meant to covered by a veil.

"The cycle of re-birth will return and light will revive this land of childhood dreams."

"It will," he repeated. He knew it would return to the beautiful land they once knew when younger, though it was still hard to believe this was indeed the joyful place they'd visited in their younger days.

"The seasons will change, and spring will overtake the winter storms, and the sun will come again," the white mare murmured. She heard Aurora, and knew the other mare had heard their previous words, though neither she nor Damon could tear their eyes from the near heart-breaking sight. Their favorite place, absolute favorite place, was plagued by a horrid storm. Even now, she could almost feel the spray of the ocean reach her, so hard did the waves hit the cliff and so high did the crashing water climb.

"Did you know this place in your childhood as well?" The young stallion asked, his ears, like his sister's, were perked lazily forward, despite the harshness of the storm below them. It would probably rain, if it wasn't so cold. Snow? Maybe hail.

Turning away from the stormy wrath of the ocean, Aurora watched the two Nequus standing nearby. To see such ones grieve over the loss of this place, it was almost too much for her to stand.

Staring back out over the grey sea, the spray from the ocean landed upon her body just as her wings instinctively spread to shield her from the cold touch. Hail was a possibility with this storm, snow was not. Despite this weather, Lady Winter would never be allowed to fully embrace this place.

"No....This is the first time I have ever been to this place. I have dwelled within the mountains during my childhood days. Only recently have I begun to see what is beyond those natural barriers."

She snorted as a flake of saltwater landed on her nose, causing her to flick her head back to rid of the itch.

"What about you two? Have you stepped beyond the darkness and traveled the realm of light?"

"The darkness?" Damon repeated as his brow furrowed, and for the first time turned to look at their new companion. Such lovely markings. "What do you mean?"

"The mountains? Of Casa Tiner, if anything," Calliope suggested, turning her head to peer over her brother's back at the newcomer.

"Oh, of course," he murmured, turning to give his sister a half-glance. "Couldn't be Fyhi tel Oren."

"No, of course not. No Reya can go there and return unscathed. Or at all."

"True, true."

"We've never been to the mountains," Calliope explained over her brother's back. "We've been to Yisi and the valley and here, but never the mountains."

"Yes, though I'd like to go to the mountains of Casa Tiner at some point."

"Just watch the forest, Damon, you know what happens in there."

"I know as well as you do, Calliope, don't treat me like a colt," he teased, prodding her flank with a muscular tail.

"I can't help it if you are," she taunted with a grin, opening her left wing to lightly smack his side with it.

"Casa Tiner....yes, I believe that's what one of my kin had called them when I first left."

A faint smile crept onto her face as the word spar between the twosome reached her ears, yet she did not turn to glance at them. Clearly the two were related by blood and were tied by a bond of friendship. A distant flash of light caught the attention of the dark Reya; ears perked forward, she stared off into the horizen.

"Hm?"

Her eyes remained on the coastline and the approaching storms clouds. Lightning sparked forth from the clouds' dark embrace as the rumble of thunder annouced the collision course it had with the mainland.

"We best head in ln-land to ride out the storm. Zeus's fury is not something most mortal beings can withstand."

"See? Casa Tiner, Damon."

"I never said it wasn't, Calliope."

"But you were thinking it."

"No I wasn't! How would you know if I was, anyway?"

"Magic," she scoffed, sticking her nose into the air as she turned and trotted off.

"Of course," he said with a light chuckle. How he loved joking around with his sister. He walked after her, turning his head towards Aurora. "We're going to head to the valley now. Care to join us?"

"Rude," came the feigned self-important voice.

"What? ...oh! Oh, yes, I'm so sorry, I completely forgot. What's your name? I believe you've already picked up ours," he said with a sheepish grin.

"I am Aurora, it's a pleasure to meet you both."

Casting a nod and a delicate smile at the sparring twins, Aurora quickly trotted after them as the first sheets of water fell from the sky. The clouds grumbled and snorted as the winds started to cast their wrath against the cold rain.

It truely became a clash of the powers. The strength of Mother Earth and Father Sky was one to tremble in fear and awe at.

Reaching a cavern set a distance away from the seaside, Aurora stepped inside and shook out the drops of liquid clinging to her wings and body; this sent them flying in all directions, bathing the stone walls.

Putting pleasantries aside for the moment, the twins trotted after their companion, albeit rather fast. She was already in a cave nearby, and they still out. Both, at the same moment, broke into an even gallop. Unlike in their foalhood, both traveled swiftly over the soaked grasses side by side, no longer trying to outpace the other. At least, not for the time being.

Upon entering the cavern, both came to an abrupt halt; Calliope was graceful, though her brother tripped a bit and stumbled, though managed not to fall. His twin smirked before shaking herself off, sending droplets of water every which way, and her normally curly mane hung limply and very straight on one side of her neck.

Damon snorted, shielding himself with a smooth wing from her shaking, before drying himself off. He purposefully tried to spray his sister with water, though didn't really succeed. That done, he tried to dry his lengthy mane a bit, but found it sopping wet and stuck to the side of his neck until it dried. Snorting at this inconvenience, the black stallion flicked his ears back before looking to Aurora with a smile, perking his ears forward. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Aurora," he said before bowing his head politely.

"Pleased to meet you, Aurora," the white mare offered, bowing her head as well.

Aurora smiled and gave a small laugh at the clumsy antics of the black male as the twosome rushed in to escape the elements.

The sister was clearly the more balanced of the two; the brother....well, he reminded Aurora of her own brother. Cocking her head, she watched as they tried to spray one another before their greetings were spoken.

Pawing at the thin layer of dirt covering the ground, Aurora cast them a brilliant smile before tossing her head; unsuccessfully trying to push her black bangs out of her dark-violet eyes.

"Hm....The pleasure is all mine, I assure you. Now, what were you two doing at the shoreline on a day such as this?"

Indeed, Calliope bested her twin at a number of things. Grace and speed just happened to be two of those. In fact, about the only thing Damon had more of than his lighter twin was sheer luck. She opened her mouth to speak before a strong gust of wind blew into the cave, swiftly splattering her back-side with a barrage of cold, prickling raindrops. She squeaked in surprise, her muscular tails writhing and playing over one another in displeasure. She shook off again, mostly her hind end than anything else, and danced off a few paces into the inner part of the cavern. "Let's go in further," she said to try and displace her nervousness. Hopefully the cave wouldn't flood... She didn't think so, but still, it wasn't a good thought.

Damon bobbed his head and snapped his tails several times, plodding further into the cave. "No, I assure you," he said as he turned his head toward her and stopped, ears perked and offering a smile, "the pleasure's all mine."

"We," the pale mare began, eyeing her darker brother with a knowing smirk before focusing her sapphire eyes on the starry mare before them, "left our good friend Sol to visit the ocean at least once during winter, to see how it looked compared to as in our foalhood."

"And it is, understandably, very different," Damon pointed out.

"Really? I hadn't any idea," his twin teased.

"Of course you didn't," he chuckled.

"You're lucky......"

Eyes glancing down at the ground for a second, Aurora looked up and turned towards the cave mouth; she watched the storm spread it's anger upon the once- happy place. A place she had never seen before until today.....

"I had dwelled within the mountains during my childhood....never traveling beyind their cold embrace. I was and still am hopelessly naive to the outside world....."

She gave a laugh with no humor behind it. Wings drooping, she turned towards the two twins standing near her with dull eyes.

"It's to say....I never actually had a childhood."

Damon merely blinked, slightly confused. "Everyone has a childhood," he stated but quickly stumbled over his next few sudden words as he felt a quick smack to his flank from one of his sister's tails. "Sometimes, though, they're not uh... Not quite as good, or some are better than others."

Calliope rolled her eyes; he was such a typical guy. She sidled over to Aurora, nudging her with a wing before stretching the leathery thing over her back consolingly. "Poor dear, forgive him; he's a bit slow to understand sometimes, you see."

"Am not!" He frowned, ears flicking back, but he wasn't sure if they should be in the mood to tease each other with their new friend looking so... depressed. He snorted silently, wondering what he could do to help that Calliope hadn't already done. Probably not much... But still, he sidled over to the opposite side of the black mare and nudged her neck with his nose gently, trying something - anything - to help her feel better. "What do you mean, you never had a childhood?"

"Basicly....I've never traveled beyond the borders until recently. So I have had no contact whatsoever with Nequus other than my family."

Tossing her head to push the damp bangs from her eyes, Aurora started slightly at the unannounced contact before calming down and eyeing the twins standing on either side of her. Such a warm comfort was.....unknown to her. Her father rarely acted...fatherly towards her, behaving more like a stone bodyguard. Her mother was never there. And her beloved brother......he was the only light in the darkness.

"Pretty much, I lived in a world with very little love for children." She eyed the other two for their reactions....if they started to pity, bleh....she hated being pitied! As long as the past never reared it's ugly head at the worst possible time, then she could continue forward.

"That sounds rather.... boring," Damon murmured thoughtfully, furrowing his brows as he gazed down at the cave floor. He shrugged his wings a bit and gazed back at Aurora. "Well, at least you're away from them now and can do as you please."

"That sucks," the white mare offered with a frown as Aurora explained her childhood experience. Or part of it, at least. "At least you had family there."

"Yeah, we didn't have parents. We were lucky we found our friend Sol; he took care of us."

"We haven't seen him in a while, though..."

"Let's all go lay down and talk, instead. The storm doesn't look like it'll let up anytime soon..." The black stallion suggested, turning his head to stare out at the driving rain and occasional rumble of thunder or strike of lightning.

"Sounds good," his twin said with a bob of her head as she retracted her wing, trodding over towards the back of the shallow cave. Once reached, she peered round her and kicked away a few rocks before carefully setting herself down with a contented sigh, turning her sapphire eyes to her brother.

"C'mon," he murmured, nudging Aurora's neck gently again before following his sister's example. Ensuring there were no rocks where he intended to lay, he plopped himself down -- cautiously, of course -- right beside his twin and shifted his weight a bit, and then again, and then again. Comfortable at last, he smiled a bit and stretched a wing over his sibling protectively. He lowered the other wing slightly, tapping at the ground beside him with the thumbclaw of the thing, indicating that the black mare should occupy the spot beside him. "Come, join us; tell us a bit about your family."
