The snow coated the grass at the mare's feet; the midmorning sun would undoubtedly cast its rays onto the reflective white sheet, had fluffy light gray clouds not been hiding it from view. As it was, the fluffy clouds were shedding their bounty, which was so chilled by the air temperature it floated down harmlessly in perfect, unique snowflakes.

The gray Ichsa pranced around in circles with a grin on her face, an ecstatic whicker leaving her maw as the soft flakes landed upon her pink-flecked coat. Her lengthy, pink-tipped tail trailed along behind her, and, together with the hoofprints she created, left an odd trail wherever she trod. All she knew was that she was free, free - and it was a most wonderful feeling. Free from the confines of her forest home, of the trapped feeling she felt there, of the pompous stallion her self-centered father had tried to shove on her for his own benefit. No, no; she could not, would not submit to such a horrible fate. She was no ones but her own. She was free, she was free as a bird, and finally, she was alone!

....she was alone. She paused in her prancings, the smile slowly fading from her face as she recalled a certain little white and black Shrila. Her ears twitched and she shuffled her tendril wings, folding them to a more comfortable position before tossing her mane to the other side of her neck. This was no time to be glum, no; she was free of her herd, and she didn't ever have to go back or see any of them ever again. But... No, she would see Milo again, she would. She forced another smile to her lips as she mulled over several songs in her mind before settling on one, and set about humming a light tune to lift her dampened spirits.

The black and white stallion was slowly walking through the thick snow. A small smile was on his muzzle as he looked around. There wasn't much around, but the day was most beautiful.

Dark Moon's dark brown eyes gazed around a little bit before he continued on his walk to absolutely nowhere. His gaze turned to the little tiger that followed him. A small nod of his head let the small creature know that he could go off and do his own thing. Of course, Blaze quickly ran of to find food then frolic in the snow. A smile appeared on Moon's face as he watched the little guy for a second.

A small hum of his own slipped from the stallion as he walked along to his own beat of drum. Today was a good day. Nothing, absolutely nothing could get him down, not even his daughter who seemed to not like him too much. Was he a bad parent? No, she was a cruel daughter... was that his fault? Did she hate that he left her mother? Most likely, but the now full grown mare had to get over the fact that he made a simple mistake that ended up in foals. He wouldn't dare tell her she was a mistake though. She was his beautiful daughter, something he would never give up for the world. He was snapped back to reality when he heard the soft, beautiful hums of a mare.

The gentle flakes of snow floated down and settled on her pink-speckled, gray coat, as she began to prance about once more, ears perked and emerald eyes bright. Sonata continued on in this fashion for quite a time, thoroughly enjoying herself and her hummings -- she even allowed herself a few notes of song, a la or ooh here and there, scattered among the hummed tune.

Her joy, at least a portion of it at any rate, was slightly forced. She didn't want to think of the few friends she'd left behind in her homelands, didn't want to think of leaving her distraught mother with her a** of a father, didn't want to think of how long until she'd see Milo again, if ever. Milo, dear, sweet Milo; her disgusting father had sent him away before presenting Sonata to some conceited idiot from another herd. Milo wouldn't have stood for it, that was why he was sent away. And he'd returned joyfully to meet his little Sonia, and her heart sank to know how terribly distraught and despondent he'd be. Once again her depressed mood overtook her and she slowed to a halt and sighed, flicking her lengthy pink-tipped tail before her ears twitched back a bit. It was hardly any use; it would be a long time before she'd see the little Shrila again.

The gentleman stallion made his way over to the sad looking mare. Only a minute ago he could hear her humming softly. Now, she seemed rather sorrowful. A soft humming sound was still coming from deep in his throat as he made his way over to her.

Maybe if he was happy, it would spread to her? As he walked, the snow fell on his back giving it the same look that was on his rump. The stallion's brown eyes looked from the mare to the snow on the ground. Maybe it was best to not talk to her since she seemed kind of down. As he passed her, he continued to hum his little made up song. Moon stepped in beat with the song and he made his way to the mare then passed her a little bit. If she truly wanted to talk, she would speak to him and if she didn't he would just continue his little walk as his buddy was out stalking something, eating something, or playing in the snow like a little foal would do.

Poor Sonia had been lost in her thoughts, so she was rather startled as the stranger passed her. The soft snow had muted his hoofsteps, and she hadn't noticed that he was humming. He was an Ichsa like her, however, and that calmed her considerably. But wait -- here, a flash of apprehension and anxiety -- was he here to take her back? ...no, no, he wasn't from her herd, nor the other, as far as she could tell. She hadn't seen him before.

Clearly, he had seen her. So why had he passed by without saying anything? He must have seen her. Why wouldn't he? She canted her head to the side, staring at him with curious green eyes. Was his rump flecked with white, or was that just the snow playing tricks on her? As it was, there seemed an excess of snow there so he'd either gotten coated in the stuff, or he did indeed have flecks of white on his coat. Ignoring the detail for now, she pondered on the best course of action. However, this was a game for two. Giving herself a thorough shake to displace any settled snowflakes, the mare perked her ears and sprung into a spirited, yet smooth-gaited trot, and she picked up on his hummed tune. She effortlessly added in her own notes, matching him and yet not, sometimes humming the same notes and other times allowing a myriad of other notes in, all in an octave higher than his, as she started to trot past him. She inwardly wondered what he'd do; it had been ages since she'd met another who enjoyed humming, and possibly, in this stallion's case maybe, singing.

His ears moved a little when he heard the mare's lovely humming. He continued to hum, not wanting to ruin the beautiful music. When she reached his side and went past him, Moon moved a little faster, just so he was right next to the mare. The smallest smile on his face as he looked towards the gray mare.

The only other Ichsa mare the stallion had met was nothing like this one. By now he had tried so hard to forget her name that he finally did. It was painful thinking about the brown mare that looked much like him. She had his heart, but instead of keeping it safe, she tore it in two... or thats what it felt like to him. His ears drop and his once happy tune turned to a sorrowful one. Now jolted back to reality by the sound of the mare's happy tune, he forgot about the past and let his tune return to a happy one. Dark Moon marched in time as he hummed with the mare. It was a fairly happy tune, and he didn't want it to end just yet.

She couldn't help but smile; he seemed like such a nice stallion, at least so far. She hadn't met another who enjoyed playing her games, besides Milo, but he wasn't that good, poor fellow. Sensing his sad tune, she flicked an ear, wondering about the cause of it. Ah, there was the happy tune once more. Still...

An idea popped into her head suddenly. Wondering what he'd do, she sprinkled a few singing notes into the humming tune. La's and ooh's and ah's scattered about, sometimes the same notes as he, but usually different. There was something to be said about successful unison, but there was just as much, if not more, to be said for a melodic mix of two separate strings of notes that could match and sound beautiful together. Sometimes, when she played such a game with members of her herd, they would spout clashing notes, which were horrid to listen to. So uneducated in the ways of music, they were. So, meeting this stallion who could play her games so well was a treat, indeed.

Moon's brown eyes looked to the mare and a smile crept to his face as he continued humming. He made sure that they were in perfect harmony. His ears turned to listen to her beautiful voice as she let la's and ooh's slip from her maw. Their song was rather beautiful and he continued to hum for a little longer. Moon didn't want it to end, but every great song had to have a magnificent ending, right? The dark stallion's voice was growing wary of humming for so long and he found this mare rather interesting, maybe it was good to talk rather than just hum?

As the song grew closer to the end, Moon kept an eye on the mare. Who was she and why did she look so sad before? She seemed chipper now. His black wings were folded to his side as he continued along in the snow. The once small smile had grown into a medium sized one. Their song was a happy one and it was a beautiful one, which made it as close to perfect as it could be.

Sonia was not one to end a perfect duet, but she could tell the chocolate-eyed stallion was growing tired of humming, despite how much fun they both were having. With a smile and a light fluttering of her pale pink tendril wings, the predominantly gray mare ended the duet with a succession of well-placed la's and ah's and ooh's in a variety of notes that she thought sounded good together - and they did, of course.

That done, she fell silent and turned a bit to study her dark companion with a bright smile. The sprinkling of white upon his back - she could tell now that it was his coat, and not simply the snow playing tricks on her - was similar to the speckling of pink upon hers, and on which she'd seen on very few. And he was another Ichsa, which made her very happy. She hadn't expected to see any out here, especially not one who shared her love of the musical talents.

Although she wasn't one to start conversations, she felt that in such a rare case as this, she ought to make an exception. "Hello," she began in her mellifluous voice, tossing her pink-tipped mane to the other side of her neck and displacing her persistent forelock so she could see properly. "My name is Sonata. What might your name be?"

His ears flicked towards her voice as their duet slowly came to an end. It was sad to hear it leave and slowly die away, but it was nice to have a conversation started rather than strange silence fall between them. His chocolate colored eyes looked the mare over once. They slowly landed on the musical note on her legs.

That answered why she was such a lovely singer and why she probably loved music. His black ears flicked towards the mare when he heard her musical voice speak to him. A smile appeared on his face as he listened to her name.

"It fits you." He finally said to the mare. When she asked her question, he answered in his soothing voice. "My name is Dark Moon, but you may call me what you please." Most others had different names for him: Dark, Moon, and all other sorts of names they could think of.

"Thank you," she murmured with a smile, bowing her head a bit. Yes, she thought her name fit her, as well; she liked it, as did Milo, and that was all that mattered. Although, it was nice to hear praise and compliments from others, too, of course.

"Dark Moon?" She echoed, testing the name out for herself before smiling, settling on a nickname for him in her mind. "It's a lovely name, although too long for casual conversation." As if she was actually good at such a thing, pfft. "I'll just call you Moon, though, I hope that's alright."

And here, she lost all ideas for conversation. Hello's and how are you?'s and what's your name?'s were all she was good at, unfortunately. Practice, Milo had said; practice! But she didn't want to talk with anyone in the herd, so how could she practice if she didn't even want to bother opening her mouth except to sing? She couldn't.

"Umm.." She scuffed the snowy ground with a peach forehoof, casting her eyes to the side as she hurriedly searched for something to talk about. "So," she started, still grasping as wisps of straws, "do you... Are you from around here?" Are you from around here? Honestly! What garbage topic was that? Still, what was said was said; at least she could pull one of several excuses if he asked her of her bad conversation skills.
