Jabberwocky
By: Lewis Carroll

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwocky, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwocky, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwocky?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

I love this poem! I think I would like to hear it put to music. I always felt kind of sorry for the Jabberwocky though, because it never says it attacked the boy, but he killed it anyway. Kinda depressing.... I'm a sucker for Jabberwockies. wink

Oh, yeah! Jabberwocky rules!

I just had an Alice in Wonderland play and they cut it out of the production! I was mad!

I keep waiting for the right time when someone will come up to me at 4:00 PM and ask me what time it is, so I can say, "Oh, around brillig..."

(Currently on Shakespeare kick!)

Just realized- parts of Jabberwocky are in IAMBIC PENTAMETER! (Or at least iambic, not pentameter)

Hey, you're right... XD

I love this poem! The perfect example of nonsense verse; Carrol was the master!

And in the Disney film the Cheshire Cat sings the first few lines as his personal song.

Despite hating the Disney film, I love that song (and the Cheshire Cat in general)!

I sung them in the eighth grade, that's how I remember. Our middle school choir sung it, and then our high school choir sung the more advanced one.
I'm sorry the quality of the second one was so bad, it was the only one I could find.

Lol, it's good enough for me. I didn't even known it had been put to music. Any idea who arranged it?
