Near the mountains, a tall stallion of various shades of grey plowed his way through the snow, packing it down that his mate might follow behind more easily. A glance behind him showed the reason why...a pregnant mare, the aforementioned mate, her coat black striped with red. Helaku's heart swelled at the sight of her, and he smiled. Amara had done much to bring him towards forgiving himself, and had brought him happiness. Finding his daughter had brought him forgiveness from her and himself, and allowed him to admit his love.

"Doing alright?" he asked, pulling himself out of his thoughts to break the silence. "If we don't find it soon, we can find a place to hole up until you're rested."

The dark colored mare carefully made her way behind Helaku, gingerly testing each step for the ground had become somewhat more slick due to the constant melting and re-freezing of the snow. For a moment, the mare wasn't really paying much attention to her now life mate for she was more concerned about the steps she took. Motherhood was certainly hard... in more ways then one! Slowly zoning back into reality, Amara continued to look down at the earth but finally responded to Helaku. "Yeah... I'm pretty sure I'll make it... Don't worry, we can still keep going." The mare looked up to give her mate a reassuring, kind smile.

However, even though she was all right, something deep inside her didn't quite feel 'all right'. Something seemed off... but she couldn't quite figure out what the feeling was. Letting the thought drift off to the side, the mare continued her careful, well placed and paced walk.

Pausing for a moment, Helaku looked back at Amara, his fondness for her shining in his dark golden eyes. Sometimes it was so hard to believe that he was here, and so was she, and that they were to usher in another generation, another chance--for him at least--at a happy family. But it was happening, and the time was now or never to get it right. Giving his mate a small smile, he turned back to his task of breaking the trail.

Having finally given birth to three foals--two more fillies, and a colt--Akila was grateful when Halia offered to watch the baskets they had been placed in for a bit, that her mother might get out of the cave that served as their little 'herd's' shelter to stretch her legs. It felt good to run again without the extra encumbrance weighing her down, although soreness remained from her efforts at bringing new life into the world. It was at a twinging ache from such that she slowed to a stop at the edge of the woods, looking out at the plains. At the sight of a familiar and beloved gray stallion, she whinnied happily to get his attention. The dark form moving behind him had to be Amara. While she had the uneasiness that a stepchild might feel at meeting a new 'mother,' she trusted her father, and so she trusted that this mare was truly something good. She had to be.

Helaku's head jerked up at the sound of his daughter's voice, his eyes immediately seeking for the sight of her. Once he caught sight of Akila, he shoved through the snow with renewed vigor, eager both to see her again and to get Amara to some shelter from the frigid weather. Panting and faintly steaming with exertion, he came to a halt before his daughter. "Akila, it's good to see you," he said, giving her a light nuzzle. "This is Amara...and Amara, this is Akila." The introduction was strictly for propriety's sake, as each had been told about the other. However, manners were one thing Helaku had done his best to learn from his mother.

With care, Amara made her way through the joyful path made by her mate and approached her other's former child. With a gentle bow of her head, Amara greeted the mare, her stepdaughter, kindly. "Pleasure to meet you Akila. Your father speaks very highly of you. I'm glad we could finally meet." The dark colored mare was almost jealous of the father and daughter relationship that these two possessed. Once upon a time, her father was much the same type of stallion as Helaku but after that... well, he stuck to looking at the brighter parts of life. Amara didn't mind though. He still cared, though in a much stranger fashion then before.

The growing feeling of unease filled the mare's body as time went on. She couldn't quite place where the feeling was coming from... Odd...

Sensing some sort of unease from his mate, Helaku laid his neck across her shoulders, attempting to lend her some sort of comfort. "So how far is it to shelter? I don't mean to be hasty," he added apologetically, "But we've traveled for some ways...we could both use the rest." He tilted his head and grinned, a impish light in his eyes. "And I never have seen this mate of yours, you know."

Akila might have quipped back at her sire, but an assessing glance at Amara silenced any joking jab she might have prepared in return. Unless her eyes were completely fooling her, it was close to Amara's time...not that she'd tell her father just yet. Her sire or not, expecting fathers could get nervous enough to become an impediment, or at the least annoying. "Thank you Amara...no, it's not much farther actually, just follow me." Gesturing at the path she herself had made coming here, she turned to lead the way. As promised it didn't take long, and Akila found Halia inside the large cave carved into the rock face, her post unabandoned. "This would be your granddaughter, and the baskets hold a grandson and two granddaugters," she said, smiling.

Halia nodded in acknowledgement of Helaku and Amara, the feather in her mane rustling as the pale blue eyes that matched it studied the two. "Mom tells me you're my grandfather...I've never had one before so I'm sorry if I mess anything up. And...you're Amara?" She added, "Mom had to catch me up on the family history a bit. It's not good, what happened to grandsire, but he looks happy next to you."

Amara bent her head down slightly and looked at her mate from the corner of her eye with a small smile. “I assure you, I’m all right. Though, a shelter does sound rather nice right about now.” Dark red glanced at Akila as Helaku’s daughter seemed to glance upon her in a rather quiet fashion… it didn’t take Amara too long to figure out what was probably going to happen soon… She appreciated the fact that Akila was attentive at such things… but then again, she did have children before Amara so it was perfectly understandable. The dark colored mare remained pretty quiet as the trio traveled to the cave where her step granddaughter watched over the baskets of her other step grandchildren. It wasn’t until Halia spoke to Amara that the mare spoke up for the feeling was starting to bother her more… “Yes, I’m Amara. Pleasure to meet you and thank you,” the mare replied as she bowed her head slightly, a habit she gained from those days. “I’m sure you’d like to speak with your grandfather more. I don’t think either of you’ve had some time to talk.” The mare walked off to the side slowly and directed her attention to Akila. “Helaku. I’d like to talk with Akila for a bit if you don’t mind.” The dark colored mare looked at her step daughter rather firmly. “I hope you don’t mind as well Akila.”

Helaku was confused, but with the looks both Amara and Akila were giving him, he figured the smart thing to do would be to remove himself as far to the edge of the cave without actually going outside. With a nod and small gesture at Halia, he did so. Reaching the entrance, he turned to face her. "I regret not being there for you, Halia...I wish things could have turned out differently. I know I can't make up for it, but I will try to do what I can now."

Having followed her grandsire curiously, Halia nodded. "It's okay...I never really felt a lack, because I don't know what it should have been like. My younger brothers and sisters will appreciate it though, I'm sure."

The two having removed themselves from immediate hearing, Akila focused her full attention on Amara. "As you can see, I've no problem with speaking alone with you. Should I make a guess as to why, or should I wait for you to tell me?" She tilted her head, striped tail swishing about her legs. "I'm sorry if I'm rude...it's been a while since anyone's come here."

"No, no, its quite all right. I'm the one who's troubling you after all," the mare sighed, shifting her weight again. "I'm sure that the two of us know what's going to happen soon," Amara chuckled lightly. "I... as much as I adore your father... Well... males... tend to be a bit on the not so helpful side when it comes to giving birth to foals you know..." A sudden kick made Amara wince as she clenched her teeth. "Urk. Ah... sorry about this..." The dark colored mare replied with a bit of a pained expression on her face. Carefully finding a soft enough spot on the ground, Amara slowly settled her body to the earth and rested, preparing for what was to come.

Eyes widening-she'd known Amara was close, but not this close-Akila shot Halia a 'keep him busy' look. Receiving the slightest of nods, the blue mare dragged some nearby baskets closer, thefted from two-leggers when she'd been told that her sire's mate was expecting. "I'm afraid I won't be as helpful as a two-legger, but it's better than nothing right?" she murmured, doing her best not to attract her father's attention. "Just try not to fight the pain...I know it sounds rediculous, but accept it. And I'm sure you've heard that you should do your best to make deep steady breaths."

"Noooo... don't worry about it..." Amara replied a bit meeker then before. She could feel the foals move about, preparing to coming into the outside world... "Well, my father says that, 'Some company is better then none'. And don't worry about the pain. I've been through worse. Living with a two legger who's a healer of sorts, you pick up on certain things." Although, the mare wanted to chew her own words from before as the pain of labor swept over her body.

Quietly wincing at the pain, Amara thought to herself and paced her mind and breaths. Come on girl... this is just a different kind of battle! You've been through worse then this! Still... the mare had to admit that birthing was a battle all entirely of its own. After a long period of time, what had begun was finally over. Amara smiled meekly to herself, her breathing still a bit irregular, but she was more or less fine in the end. The battle training proved to be helpful again... although in a totally different scenario. Looking onward at her three precious foals, the mare licked them clean as she could before attempting to do anything else. Carefully picking herself up, the mare took some time to regain her composure before setting off to aid her precious bundles, placing them in their own basket. It took her a lot of effort but she got the job done. Sighing, the mare settled herself on the ground again when the task was finished and decided to rest for a bit.

"I'll be back...you might not be too hungry now, but soon you'll feel like you could strip the whole plains bare." Picking up another, smaller basket in her teeth-she'd picked up a couple extras just for this purpose-Akila made her way out of the cave, brushing past her father.

Startled, Helaku peered in the cave to see the prone figure of his mate...and...baskets nearby? Flooded with concern, he rushed to her side. "I'm so sorry...I didn't mean to miss this...I'm so sorry." Apologetically he nuzzled her. "They're beautiful...I'm sure you did well." Turing his head, he attempted to glare at Halia while nuzzling Amara.

All Halia could do was shrug helplessly and laugh.

Amara nodded her head in reply as she watched Akila step out to get some food... and her love to step in to comfort her. The dark mare nuzzled her mate lovingly in return. "Yes, they are beautiful children. And to think, we had three! They'll certainly be a handful when they come out of their baskets," Amara chuckled. Her ears perked up a little as she noted the slight glare that came from Helaku and playfully nipped at her long mane. "Don't be like that Helaku. Your granddaughter didn't mean to do anything bad."
