It was a hot hot day on the island, and even more so in the Grand Desert. It was downright blistering, and no sane creature would be out in it, even those that would bask in the sun for heat and life...so of course, Korrit was sprawled lazily over the edge of a large rock, letting her tail swirl idly in the oasis' water below. She hummed under her breath as she lounged, the very picture of a peaceful Painter. Which she mostly was, save for a faint concern over the whispers she'd been catching on the wind lately...Nothing too amazing, just bits and pieces, and like as not JUST the wind. Still, it stuck in her head, rattling around between her ears like so many grains of sand.
"Hnnnn...'I submit to darkness'...What's that supposed to mean, I wonder." She mused to herself a while longer, rolling onto her side and yawning. "Alright then...time to cool down." With a lurch she toppled into the oasis, bobbing to the surface like some brown and purple rubber duck. Huffing a spray of the crystal water, she stretched out one wing, catching what little passing breeze there was and sailing off across the water, more akin to a boat than a Painter for the moment.

Scorching HOT! HOT HOT HOT! Why of all days did Marlowe decide to fly through the Grand Desert? Tired and cranky from his long flight from the canyon, the male huffed his way through the air, wondering when he would see water again. He didn't want to travel by land; he feared his hands and feet would burn in the sand. Sweat continued to pour out, obscuring his vision every now and then. He wouldn't be surprised if he was making a small rain shower for anyone underneath his path.
Marlowe continued to pump his wings, but soon found his vision obscured once more from the fresh droplets of sweat he produced. He shook his head and momentarily stopped flying. By the time he realized he wasn't flying, it was too late. The Painter was already plummeting straight down towards the earth with accelerating speed. But as fate would have it, instead of landing dead smack onto the sand into a pile of mush, Marlowe splashed right into a pool of water where another Painter was simply enjoying herself.

Korrit heard the falling male before she saw him. Not that she knew it was a 'him', or a Painter at all that was falling. Rather, she assumed it was an odd bird. Well really. It sounded different through the water! And so, until Marlowe hit the water, she simply kept paddling/sailing along. And then...
"Ahh! Tidal wave!" She rolled in the water, riding the wave from the male's splash to the shore. Prancing out of the water, utterly dazzling in the sun, she whooped happily. "Yeah! Dunno what made that wave, but it was great!" With a huff she ran off, looping around, ready to take a diving leap into the pool...and at the last moment spotted Marlowe, but it was too late! With a squeaking cry, she landed smack dab on top of him!

While under the water, Marlowe began to panic since he didn't breathe before the impact. The male was beyond tired, but he didn't want to drown, so he summoned up whatever energy he had left and swam back up to the surface. As soon as he came up, he took in a deep breathe and looked up, only to be met with a large shape coming right at him. In an instant, he was knocked back into the water, but this time with someone or something acting as a weight.
Freaking out again, he flailed his arms and lashed his tail, but that only made him grow even more tired. Giving up, he let his body float up to the top naturally and lay on the surface, breathing heavily. As much as he wanted to yell at whatever that thing was, he was simply too tired. As he drifted along the surface of the water, he began to drift off into sleep. The cool water was a long awaited welcome and the weightlessness of his body felt so good. He only wished this could last forever, but good things never last forever...

The second she hit the water, and Marlowe, Korrit started thrashing about, hurrying to get off of him. Worried she might have injured the other Painter, she bolted for the surface, looking frantically about for him.
"Nothing, nothing...where is he?!" She took a breath and shoved her head back under, just in time to see him come floating up to the surface. It was obvious he was tired..."Did he fall out of the sky or something?" She wondered to herself. Sheesh, and then she'd gone and leapt on him like that...Well, best apologize, she figured. She lashed her tail, powering her after the drifting Marlowe.
"Hey, hey you...I'm sorry I jumped on you, didn't see you 'til the last second. Hey you, you okay you?"

Marlowe began to dream of a cool cavern where he was resting comfortably in a small pool of crystal clear water under a waterfall. A human stood nearby, holding out a large tray of all sorts of delicacies for him to eat. "Some food to enjoy while you bathe, master?" Marlowe got out of the pool and started to choose which dish he wanted to eat. Suddenly, an incoherent voice echoed throughout the cavern. The cavern began to shake and the human disappeared. "No! My food!" The pool began to flood and Marlowe soon found him drowning in the water. Suddenly, everything went white and...
...he woke up with a start, thrashing about in the shallow end of the pool of water. He bumped his head on a tree root jutting out of the sand and fell into the water. Under the water, he saw the same large shape from before approach him and immediately surfaced again. He jumped up onto his hind legs and stared at the female Painter in front of him. "Who the heck are you and why did you ruin my dream?"

Korrit watched (only with slight amusement) as the male Painter thrashed about. looked like he'd been...asleep? But then he was yelling and rearing and...oh dear. She held her ground, waiting for his rant to end. Then, with a deep breath, she put on her best charming smile, gave a little wiggle, and darted forwards to greet this new friend.
"Hiya! I'm Korrit! and I ruined your dream, sorry about that by the by, because you were just floating there after getting jumped on AND falling from the sky. I was afraid you were drowning or something and I wanted to be sure you were okay. You'd do the same thing right? I mean, if you had been relaxing around here and then seen another painter come down out of the sky? It's just what you do, right? Make sure they aren't hurt. Right? Right?"

Marlowe glared at Korrit as she went on and on, hammering her mouth away. He rolled his eyes and fidgeted as he grew more and more impatient and annoyed. Soon, he had enough.
"ENOUGH WITH THE BLABBERING! Geeze! You trying to melt my brain or what?! You already tried drowning me earlier....Hmph! The nerve!"
The male turned his back on the female and stuck his snout in the air. With a grunt, he began to walk off. However, his limbs were too weak from exhaustion to support his heavy body and promptly fell over moaning. He heard his stomach growl and rolled his eyes again. There was no way he was going to get food and the only way was to ask that annoying Painter behind him. Even though his tough-guy pride was on the line, letting his guard down just once is better than dying. With a sigh, he muttered a request, his face straining with difficulty.
"Hey...you...Carrot or whatnot...Could you...um...get me something...to eat?"

Korrit snapped her mouth shut when Marlowe burst out yelling. It was safe to say that she wasn't used to being yelled at. Then again, Marlowe counted as one of the first other Painters she'd met recently, so maybe her conversation skills were a bit rusty...
"N-no.." She murmured, staring at the ground. Of course, she'd just met a new friend, and she'd made him mad. Just great. She seemed to sink in place at the rejection. With a sigh sh wondered if there was something she could do to make it up to the male. Oops...looks like he fell over...maybe she could help after all!
With an excited (but contained) wiggle, she skittered around to sit by Marlowe's head. She gave him a once over, noting the shaking wings and limp limbs. He looked like he hadn't eaten all day! Without a word she bounded into the surrounding brush. A few minutes passed and she came back out, two fruits of middling size firmly in her teeth. With a huff of pride at succeeding in her mission, she dropped them by the male's head and nudged them closer.
"It's Korrit. And here. You eat that while I find more." With a shy (she was hoping he wouldn't yell about he food) smile she went out again, maybe this time she'd find a rabbit!

With his eyes closed, Marlowe heard Korrit skitter away. He sighed, too tired to open his eyes. Maybe he was too harsh? Maybe she ran away crying? No, her skittering did not sound like she wanted to run away. It sounded more like a happy skittering. The male blew air through his nose and felt the sand move away.
Marlowe was once again about to sleep until he heard the same skittering coming towards him. This time he bothered to open his eyes and stared at the round fruit in front of him. His mouth began to water at the sight of such succulent fruit, but he restrained himself and started to sit up. With difficulty, he managed to heave his body into a sitting position and grabbed a fruit. He sniffed it once and looked back at Korrit.
"Korrit...that's what I said, didn't I? And are you sure these are safe?" He huffed and looked the other way, hearing Korrit run off again. When he was sure she was gone, he chomped down the fruit in a split second and proceeded with the second. The cool and tangy juice ran down the side of his mouth as he bit off large chunks. He finished his snack off by licking his fingers and smiling. He didn't care what fruit it was since it was absolutely delicious and refreshing.
Marlowe slumped back over and sucked on a finger, hoping he could get some excess juice off of it. Maybe this Korrit Painter isn't always so annoying after all. If she doesn't end up driving him nuts, she may be a nice friend to have. Marlowe grunted with content and waited for the other Painter to return.

Korrit had indeed found a rabbit...well she thought it was a rabbit. She really hadn't seen that many, she personally preferred fish and fruit. But ah well, she'd found something fuzzy and moving and made of meat. She stalked it with all the grace of a five year old toddling about with a megaphone, but was still somehow able to pounce on it. It was probably good that such an oblivious animal was taken, and not a smart one...
Highly pleased with herself she scooped up the rabbit and took off at a strut back...wait. Which way was back? Oh fudge, she'd gotten lost! That was no good, that male Painter was lying back there, waiting for her to return! What if the fruit wasn't enough and even now he was calling for her to help him, or was dying of starvation? What if some other (who knew what) bigger animal had come and attacked him?? WHAT IF HE HAD TRIED TO FLY AND THEN SWERVED TO MISS ANOTHER PAINTER, HAD GONE SPIRALING OUT OF CONTROL, CRASHED INTO A MOUNTAIN WHICH CAUSED AN EARTHQUAKE AND GOTTEN STUCK UNDER A FALLING ROCK, HELPLESSLY WATCHING THE EARTHQUAKE CAUSE THE OLD DORMANT VOLCANO TO ERUPT...
"AND NOW THE LAVA WAS FLOWING DOWN TO THE CANYON AND EVERYONE IS GOING TO DIE!!" She cried in terror, taking off at a mad dash, hoping to break through the tree line in time to fly off and warn everyone...She came crashing out about ten feet downwind of Marlowe, splashing into the water. She whirled around to see where the male had been...oh. He was still there. With an embarrassed giggle, she shuffled over and dropped the rabbit. "Here you go then...don't fly into any mountains now, right?"

((Korrit is made of win right there xD))
Marlowe sat still and stared off into the distance. He wondered what was taking Korrit so long and sat up again. "Did she leave me? I doubt it, but..." He sighed and turned towards the water. He stared at his reflection and wondered why he was even flying in the desert in the first place. He couldn't think of any reason other than because he was bored. "Boredom, eh? I shouldn't get bored too often then."
The male continued to reflect on what had happened that day and closed his eyes to concentrate. He left his cave without his companion knowing and set off for a day by himself. After that, he didn't remember much except getting bored and flying around aimlessly. Pretty soon, he found himself in the middle of the desert not knowing exactly how he got here. He couldn't even remember what he was thinking during that time. Oh well. He sighed once more and was about to take a brief swim until he heard a familiar voice shrieking about everyone dying.
"What the heck...."
Marlowe turned around slowly, only to see Korrit burst out of the trees and land right into the pool, where the water promptly splashed right onto him. He sat there blinking a few times before shaking the water off and staring into the pool of water. He watched the female drop a fresh, but soaking wet, rabbit and sighed. Well, meat is meat. He reached for the rabbit but paused at Korrit's statement. "Since when did I fly into a mountain? Did this have to do with you shouting like a mad Painter back there? Forget it, I don't want to know..." He averted his eyes and chomped down the rabbit. The water made it lose some flavor, but it was better than nothing. With some effort, he mumbled his thanks. "Thanks a lot...you are quite, what's the word, helpful..."

Alexstrasza watched the two get along. She smiled a bit and turned to continue her journey forward to a Cove-She heard some strange new dragons which resembled 'Sea Serpants' had found home nearby. She needed to see them for herself, and they do say "Seeing is believing...."

Korrit swelled with prise at the praise, thumping her tail against the ground.
"Good! Being helpful is a good thing. I'm glad I'm it." Yes, Korrit was indeed a happy Painter. She looked up at the sky, basking in the warmth of the sun, her tail swishing back and forth, occasionally slipping over Marlowe's. Hmm. A lovely day. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, good company. Yes, what more could she ask for?
A passing Painter in the sky brought her 'round, and she beamed at the male beside her. "Anything else I can try to find? I think there might be a fish or two in the water..." She peered at the pool. "...What do you think?" And of course, being herself, Korrit turned her head a mite too far, and cracked her brow against Marlowe's jaw. "Ahhhooow!"

Marlowe felt more at ease with Korrit and even smiled at her. He sat up straight and gazed into the pool of water. He saw a fish darting around, and stared at it. And as if Korrit had read his mind, she asked him if he'd like some fish! He turned to reply, but was met with Korrit's head right against his own.
"Arrraaaauggggh!!!! Owowowowowowow!!!!!!!!"
The male stood up and flailed about, holding his jaw. His foot slipped on some wet grass and fell right into the pool of water with a huge splash. Marlowe thrashed around in the pool, still in pain, and began to choke on the water. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted another Painter leaving and calmed down immediately. He coughed up the water he swallowed and slowly made his way out of the water, still holding his nose. He forgot about the current situation and spoke to Korrit as if nothing happened at all.
"Did you see that Painter go by? Or am I just seeing things....Oh hey, are you ok? Oh geeze...did I...do something???"
