Ok this question isnt from me, but from a friend of mine. She told me that for some reason on full moon she cant sleep. She asked me what to do about it, and honestly i have no idea.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

In my opinion (psychology major sweatdrop )... it's probably just in her head. A lot of people believe that weird/strange things happen during the full moon (such as higher crime rate, insomnia, headaches, bad dreams, etc) when it's really just in their heads and that they only notice it during a full moon because they believe that.

Does she try to fix it by doing things like drinking warm milk or tea before bed, read a little bit, or sleep near an amythest?

I usually have a harder time sleeping when there is a full moon, but I think part of it is because it is so much brighter out.

Tell her to drink herbal tea, I'm not sure about the full moon though. Seems like a lot of people get weirded out by it, and most of it is in their heads, but um yeah herbal tea always works for me when I can't sleep.

It could be in her head, but she doesnt look at lunar calenders so im not sure how she would keep track of it. (looking doesnt work cause some night it looks full when its not)

I'll suggest tea to her. Hopefully that works

You don't need to look at a lunar calendar to know when there will be a full moon. You can tell just by looking at the moon and they usually put them in normal calendars.

It doesn't matter if the moon is actually full, because if you look at it and think that it's full (even if it really isn't), then you will believe that it's a full moon.

my calander i got from the dollar store has a lunar calander in it, so yah they are every where...

I would suget tea, maby camamiel...sp, but not warm, but cool. I have a tendance having trubble sleeping after a hot bevrage, i dont know it others do but when i can sleep a cool drink helps wonders...^_^

further more, if she prefers to drink her tea with a sweetener advise her not to for sugar is your worst nightmear when it comes to sleep deprevation.

Psyc major here too, so forgive me, but it does sound like she has come to associate the full moon with sleep deprivation. If she looks outside and thinks that it is full, whether it actually is or not, the thought probably goes through her head, "Oh great, another sleepless night." Put that into your subconscious and you have lost the battle already. I would actually suggest that anytime she notice it is a full moon that she think about what a nice deep sleep she is going to get that night. It won't work right at first, it takes time to retrain your mind and body. But anytime the thought of not sleeping appears she needs to stop it and repeat to herself that she will sleep.

Other than that I would say the same as the others, warm tea or milk. I have heard good things about amethyst. If she is doing something that she believes will make her sleep that might help her get over the hump as well wink Your mind is your worst enemy =P

Unless her bed is by a window and she is very sensitive to ambient light... I doubt Full Moon is the direct cause. It is possible that her hormonal rhythms are such that she experiences insomnia during the full moon; womens' hormonal rhythms tend to be roughly equivalent to the lunar cycle, so ask her about her menstrual cycle and how closely it matches up with the moon cycle. The other possibility is what others have already mentioned; mental association and subsequent conditioning.

The last 2 fulls moons I've noticed I either dream more or the dreams are more vivid so that I remember them. I'm sure I dream, but normally I don't remember them at all.

I think there is something to the full moon theory. It is probably psychological(we are all human after all) but there have been studies that more violence takes place during a full moon than a normal night. Police even plan around it putting more squads out there like they do for holidays etc.

Perhaps meditating more and trying not to focus on the fact its a full moon. An amythest in her pillowcase might help too. I put one in mine when I have one of my episodes on insomnia.

Funny you should mention that Kareena... because we were just talking about that in my psych class. That's actually false. They've done studies and have proven that there isn't any more violence during a full moon than there is when it's not a full moon. But since some police think there is more violence during a full moon, they prepare themselves so. So, really, they're only noticing it more and looking harder for it during a full moon.

Really? Hmm, must be recent studies b/c I learned that in my college pysch class...hmm about 7 years ago. lol It's possible that some cities(perhaps smaller ones?) have cops that do believe it and plan around it, and others that don't? I'd be really interested in reading about it though. Are you guys reading out of a college textbook or is there anyplace online you could point me too?

But you know what? No matter what studies say at one point; its usually only a matter of time before they say something completely different! lol xd mrgreen

We're reading out of a college textbook that has just recently been printed/written. So yeah, it's probably recent studies. I'll see if I can find something online for you to look at.

I learned the same thing in my psyc class, that police do tend to put more people on patrol because of a myth about the full moon, however, no studies have shown any support for the myth. I think it really goes back to the mental thing, because if these cops believe there is more violence during the full moon then they are going to notice the violence that is there more, even if in actuality it is the same as any other night.
