He was wandering aimlessly, and he knew it. The long-legged, haggard wolf had taken turn after turn after turn for hours, and barely knew where he was. Phobos wasn't even sure if he was still on his brother's lands, and when he realized that, he stopped, looking behind him.

He needed to head back.

Sticking his nose in the air, he tried to catch the breeze, catch some hint of where he was, but the whisper of wind was so light, and the trees so thick, it couldn't reach him.

He dipped his nose to the ground, trying to keep panic from rising, but when he couldn't catch any trace of smell off the fresh layer of snow over the hard pack, he started to pace, a whine falling from his maw.

A twig snapped in the distance and he jumped, whirling around with a growl, his ears flattened to his skull. "Who's there?!"

Venda had been wandering aimlessly for at least two days, she was clumsy in the area and knew as much by the way her stomach was growling. She thought she had smelled the marker of a pack, but she was confused if she was in their lands or how to get out. Her only hope was that she didn't run into another wolf, or if she did she hoped it was friendly.

She shuddered and felt around with her paws snapping twigs and rustling making a terrible amount of noise. She stopped and inhaled deeply trembling with sudden fear as she heard a growl and a voice. She slowly slunk forward uncertainly moving her head in the direction of the voice. "I'm sorry..." She tried to calm her trembling voice and slipped a bit closer uncertain how to gauge how far or close he was until he spoke or growled once more.

"I...I didn't mean to...intrude?" She didn't even know if she had intruded but the growls told her that she was in the wrong place, a place she did not belong. But...I don't belong anywhere... She thought sadly.

Phobos heard the timid voice and spotted the femme a few moments after, eyes widening in surprise.

No wonder she had been making so much noise . . .

His growls ceased as quickly as the had started, and he shifted one paw so that it crunched in the snow, giving her some bearing as to where he was. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap. I'm a little frustrated," he added, peering around him again. Phobos was almost positive he needed to head east to get pack to the den.

"Are you lost?" he asked, and immediately felt like a jerk. What a thing to ask a blind wolf, he scolded himself.

Venda was still shivering for cold and hunger but her fear melted slowly away as the growls stopped. She edged a bit closer to the sound of his voice her paws moving in unsteady sweeps.
"It's okay...I just got a little...confused." Confused ha if only she were simply confused, Venda was totally uncertain of where she was. She kept her head down even as she spoke her posture kept low but not out of the usual sign of submission but so she could better feel around her.

"I'm...I...Yes I'm lost." There she admitted it out loud, but that didn't help any. She took a deep breath and tried to explain better.
"I'm sorry for wandering into your lands. I smelled the pack marker, but I wasn't sure if I was in or out of the territory. It's...I get a little confused sometimes." She added softly feeling foolish once more. Things that had once been so simple for her, catching a rabbit or walking through the forest had become terrible chores.

A low whine left his throat and he moved a bit closer, enough for her to catch his scent. He could see how badly she shivered, and the rumblings of her stomach could only be from hunger, but he didn't know what to do.

Again, he glanced around, wishing his brother would somehow stumble upon him and determine what to do with the femme.

But seeing as Deimos wasn't here . . .

"My brother is the alpha of these lands. I could . . . take you to him? Get you something to eat, perhaps . . . "

Usually the haggard wolf walked without a sound, moving as quietly as possible through the forest, but he made his footsteps purposefully noisy, crunching his claws in the snow so that he wouldn't frighten her by seeming to appear next to her out of nowhere. He sniffed her coat, his eyes taking in her dark colors. Though it was a little dirty now, he could just imagine how her fur shined when she could clean.

He wondered if it was hard for her to do that now . . .

"My name is Phobos . . . "

"Your brother is the alpha? I'm sorry I really didn't mean to intrude..." She sounded a bit timid until he mentioned food. It made her flush with embarrassment, was it so obvious how hungry she was? She nodded softly at Phobos "I would like to apologize to your brother for wandering in like this, and maybe get permission to...hunt"

Hunt..ha She would probably scare off all the prey in the area before she managed to snag a morsel, that was how her 'hunts' went now. She was ashamed to think that at times she had considered scavenging, but her pride had stopped her. Her ears perked and she turned her face in his direction, she could only imagine how foolish she looked at times talking off into empty space.

"I'm Venda...It's nice to meet you..." Her tone was uncertain, but she was glad indeed that Phobos was not a vicious alpha who would chase her off his land. She inhaled his scent and relaxed slowly this male did indeed seem friendly and his scent was warm and unique, a pleasure to her nose. She wanted to explain that her haggard appearance was due to a clumsy moment earlier, but instead decided to ask for a fix to the problem.

"Do you know where the nearest source of water is?" Her tone was relaxed now, firmer without the questioning or fearful undertone.

Smiling softly, he cocked his head to one side. She was a proud female, he could tell by her voice. He wondered how much it irked her to be blind and unable to do much.

For a brief moment, he was glad that she couldn't see him; his fur was enough to give anyone a fright.

"Venda," he repeated, liking how the name rolled off his tongue. "That's a pretty name. And Deimos won't care. He's really a big softy," he added, choosing to keep his worry over someone taking advantage of his brother's kind heart to himself.

Then she asked about water, and he felt himself blush. Curse his nose for getting him lost. "Um, well. You see . . . " He flattened his ears to his skull in embarressment. "I can't . . . I don't really . . . smell things well. My nose just . . . doesn't work."

It was true. Ever since puppyhood, it was as if someone had shoved cotton tufts up his nose, and now he couldn't really smell anything unless it was disgustingly obvious and particularly foul.

"That's why I'm . . . uh, lost too," he finally admitted, hanging his head. What a wolf he was, being scent blind and getting lost on his own homelands.

"Thank You Phobos. Deimos, your alpha?" She nodded softly and listened to him taking everything in that she could his voice, his scent, she wanted to feel his fur to become used to things but that was inappropriate.

She listened to his uncertain words and tilted her head, he could not smell as well, but that was fine with her with his eyes and her nose they would find the way easily enough. "It's alright, I'm lost too after all...but we must be close to your packlands I smelled the marker not far off. With your sight and my smell..." She smiled softly.

How good it felt to try and be of use to someone for once her ears perked up trying to catch the sound of water, but they were still too far off. She slowly turned and felt around before inhaling. "I came from that way...and thats the way I smelled the packlands."

Phobos' smile grew, though he felt somewhat saddened that she couldn't see how much he appreciated her offer. But that had been his same though: her smell, and his sight? They made the perfect team.

Looking over her shoulder, he narrowed his eyes and peered through the trees, trying to spot anything he might recognize. In the distance, he thought he saw a landmark his brother had shown him, a huge, ancient pine that was dead at the very top, but he'd have to get a closer look before he would know for sure.

Hoping he wasn't invading her personal space too much, he nudged her shoulder gently with his muzzle. "Alright. Just stay by my side, and we should get there in no time," he said softly, making sure she would be able to hear the smile in his voice.

Venda moved to walk alongside Phobos her tail gently swaying to brush his and keep her oriented. She made sure she wasn't walking in his path and kept herself at a slightly slower pace so he could lead.

"The scent is getting stronger I think we're closer..." She murmured softly. She hoped he didn't mind the way she relied on touch and scent to follow him, for so long she had walked alone afraid to hit trees or stumble over uneven ground. It was nice to have someone leading the way and knowing she could move without concern of hitting any large obstacles. She remembered the first time she had slammed herself into a tree her shoulder throbbing with pain while she sat there ashamed of herself and disoriented.

At her words, Phobos looked up, realizing that he had been wandering inside his own head, his body on autopilot as it maneuvered the two of them through the trees. Blinking, he looked upward, realizing that he recognized their location.

His tail started to wag, whapping gently against hers.

"I know where we are know," he murmured softly, leaning close enough so that their sides touched. It was a way to keep her aware of his position, although, if he were to be truthful to himself, he liked having a reason to be close to her. There was something about her that seemed to pull at him, but he shook his head, not wanting to tread down that path right now. It could be a painful one in the long run, mostly for him . . .

Remembering that he desperately needed a bath, he hoped that she didn't sniff too closely . . .

Suddenly, a quick movement caught his eye, and he whirled, seeing a rabbit frozen ahead of them, one foot outstretched, it's chest moving rapidly with its heavy, frantic breathing.

Venda is still hungry, he thought to himself, and that was all it took for him to make up his mind. "Don't move, please," he whispered, giving her a reassuring lick on the cheek before lunging forward, his claws digging deeply into the soft dirt.

For as bedraggled as he looked, he was swift. The startled rabbit didn't have a chance.

Venda relaxed as Phobos side brushed against hers and her head moved up a little as she walked with more confidence. Her nose twitched every few moments as she relied on it and her ears to help her the rest of the way. She was proud to have helped him back into familiar territory. She froze and stiffened as he whirled around surprised by the sudden motion.

"Phob-?" She cut off as she heard him whisper and crouched low quietly remaining still as she heard him lunge off. She smiled softly at the lick her flesh warming under her fur.

Venda waited hopefully and curiously surprised by how easily she allowed this stranger to aid her. She knew she should show more caution, but she did not feel as warry or concerned over his character as she should have. Perhaps she had been so alone, hurt and confused that she needed to finally trust someone.

So hungry was he that he almost completely forgot about Venda as he snapped the creature's neck with his strong jaws.

Almost.

Taking the plump rabbit, he walked slowly back to her, his head and tail high as pride surged through him.

"Hungry?" he asked, though it came out muffled by fur and flesh. After making sure that she heard him, he moved closer, setting the warm little body by her feet and nudging it towards her. Then he sat on his haunches, waiting patiently, perfectly content to watch her.

Venda sniffed and had to keep her mouth from watering, she let her head drop down though her nose touching the still warm flesh. She was starved, but she couldn't just accept the meal from him. "I...just a snack...we could share?" She turned her face towards him.

She was incredibly grateful to him for being so willing to share his food with her. She had felt the slight bump of his ribs against her side and while she carried some weight still on her form from being fed by two leggers, he didn't seem to have such luck.

Honestly surprised by her response, he dipped his head, his ears falling back in pleased embarrassment. Thinking about his near starved form, he wondered if she could sense how haggard he was. But he had been hungry most of his life. The pains of his belly no longer affected him to such extent, but he could plainly hear hers growling with renewed vigor at the scent of fresh blood. There was barely enough rabbit there to ease her hunger pangs, let alone to share with him.

"Please," he said softly, "my brother will have food for me later. I'm not even hungry," he added, hoping she would take the meat. In all honesty, when he had seen the rabbit, his own hunger had been the last thing on his mind. Making Venda happy had been the first.

Again, that thought belonged on a path best left untrodden.

But, to ease her feelings, he added, hoping she could sense the smile he tried to put into his words, "If you want, you can share with me later."
