ok, i haven't seen this yet and i'm interested. what system for leveling up or learning abilities is your favorite and WHY? i'll list them for reference
FF1&2: standardy level up, predetermined classes, buy spells
FF3(VI): Espers, equip them, gain ability points, learn abilities/spells!
FFV: first job system, gain ability points to level up job and learn abilities, buy spells
FFVII: materia, equip materia, gain ability points, learn stuff
FFVIII: equip gfs, learn abilities, and draw magic
FFIX: predetermined classes, equip items, gain ability points, learn new spells/abilities
FFX: sphere grid
FFX-2: job system, abilities limited to that job only, standard level up as well (also, New Game+ feature allows you to keep job levels from previous completed saves)
FFTactics: more in depth job system
my favorite is the FFV job system, mainly because it is simple, yet very complex at the same time. it allows you to specialize or generalize all your characters given you are willing to take the time. FFIII's espers come in a close second for me.

I liked the X system with the sphere grid cause then you could essentially level them up any way you wanted. It allowed for more freedom.

I think ffVIII was best because you could totally customize it but ffIX was nice and simple.
*edit by chaos.ultima.mage* i've attempted to fix this so it is readable...

Hmm... Either IX or X-2 (Which you forgot about!). I like that in IX, once you learn an ability, you keep it, rather than if you unequip something, you lose the ability. I haven't played all that much of V, but I'd definately say I like X-2's system better. I also hate the idea of having to buy spells. >.<
EDIT: One more thing I liked about X-2 was the timing and all: How all the characters could attack at once, it takes more time to say, cast spells than use a normal attack and such.

ah, sorry about that. i'll add it immediately. thank you for pointing that out.
as for your preference with FF9, many of the other FF games allow you to retain abilities learned one way, even when unequipped (right off hand, i know FF3 does). one of the reasons the other games don't allow it, is the simple fact that it would make it too much easier. FFXI limited who could learn what, therefore making that system more controllable.
if you ever play FF5, you will greatly realize why many prefer the job system there. i don't think i've ever seen a better job system in any RPG. i wish they'd remake it with updated graphics and voice overs...it'd be insane

There was another reason I preferred X-2 as well; I put it in my other post.

huh... very interesting...
I'd definitly have to say either the class system, or the esper system.
Class- It's natural that people with a different upbringing or job would have different skills and such, so it's really more realistic in my opinion. And that makes it so much funner, because you have to determine which classes do well against what types of enemies and all of that jazz. So much more interesting than just having skills and using them.
The esper system i liked simply because it made sense. Different teachers teach you different skills after you train hard enough. Such a good way to learn don't you think? and veen though this makes it so most of your characters have the same magic abailities, they still have their own skills which makes it more interesting.
My only main problem with most of the other systems is that pretty much EVERYONE can learn EVERY skill, especially in X... that made it so boring... -_-

yeah, i know what you mean. i'll probably never touch FFX again unless it is just to show off...i've gotten everything and somehow my Yuna still manages to be my best everything. she has 25,000 HP and deals 99,999 with everything she does (including a basic attack)
it is really sad how much time i've spent on that game

I gotta say, I like FFX's Sphere Grid the best. I guess it -did- make things a little too easy, but it was the most fun out of all of them, in my opinion. sweatdrop

I like the Sphere Grid system, although you can really screw up if you don't activate certain things...
