Jairus was lazing about in the muck that he so enjoyed, out in the forest after a heavy rainstorm. This particular depression in the land made for a wonderful mu dhole that he could play at being a swamp monster in. His colours were perfect for such pursuits and scaring the daylight out those foolish souls who passed through his little kingdom brought hours of delight to the ornery Trick.
With a growl, he sank deeper into the muddy water until only his nose and top of his head were above water. It had been boring so far... but he didn't want to leave. Was too lazy, really.

"One, two, ah-one two three, oooh, I was a merry lad about the whistling sea, with pretty girls about my arms and a fortune left be-hiiind me-"
Osias was singing a jaunty sort of song as he wandered looking for a late breakfast or early lunch, only slightly off-key. It was a pleasant sort of song he'd thought up earlier, with epic battles with giant squid somewhere towards the middle. He'd rather like to be a sailor - though, he thought with a raspy, hyena-like sort of chuckle mid-chorus, since he couldn't swim and didn't even like the sea he supposed he wouldn't be very good at it.
"But a swamp, my duck, oh, that'd be a better choice," he said to himself, looking at the mucky, muddy stretch of land before him. "Osias, you toothsome fellow, I believe you're right! I know, yes yes, quite, shall we then my good sir?"
He chuckled and laughed like a hyena again, stamping his front legs in glee.
"Only if you sing that song again, good sir! Oh, alright, alright, if you insist..."

Bright green eyes blinked as another wandered near... ears perking as the sound of song lifted into the air. Singing? Bah. Blowing bubbles, he rolled his shoulders and settled lower into the muck, drawing nearer the edge of the pond. Wouldn't be fun to make the cheerful song take on more sour notes? A good fright ought to accomplish that.
What was the other laughing about anyways....? Meh. Didn't matter, he'd get the last laugh.
Splashing loud enough to draw attention, he froze a moment later, letting the colour of his coat blend him into the surroundings. Oh, but what fun this would be.

Stumbling over the next verse - in which a bawdyhouse with its fine painted ladies had caught on fire and the Noble Sailor was rushing to their rescue - Osias glanced sidelong at the patch of swamp that had splashed at him.
"Oh, my fine ducks and fawns, a sense of trickery is afoot," he said, clicking black teeth together thoughtfully. "It would be quite rude of me to pass it by."
Osias stepped off the thin dry path and sank hock-deep into slick mud and cloudy water.
"Come out, come out," he said in a sing-song voice.

Jairus harumphed and blew up bubbles as he rose, "That's not how it's supposed to work. You don't go looking for trouble, takes all the fun out it." Grumbling, he rolled his shoulders and shook the swamp water from his fur, leaving it damp and matted with moss.
"Besides, you're crazy. There's no ducks or fawns here....." He fixed the other with a look of mild alarm after scanning the area. Just wonderful. Someone who ruined his ploy was also someone who saw things.

Osias let out a cackle of laughter, stamping his front legs again and splashing himself with slime and mud.
"But it would've been a fine joke, if it had worked!" he said, grinning so wide he showed every black tooth in his head. "Come come, friend Sits-In-The-Mud. Maybe if I backtrack and come down the path pretending we've never met, you could try it again!"
A duck gave a scandalized quack and took flight behind him as Osias launched into another fit of hyena-laughter, positively rolling in the muck.
