As a general rule I tend to not believe in depression especially among those who say that they are Christians. Once you have excepted Christ you are suppose to have the joy of the Lord in your heart and be joyful. Yet, I have come across many people who are Christians and yet they hold on to misery like it is their life-line. They simply refuse to get happy.
I understand that we are not 'happy-go-lucky" all the time, for everyone gets sad now and then, but depressed? Can you really be a Christian and yet suffer from Depression?

Yes. You can... Christian Depression starts when you begin to fall out of love with Christ. Something else takes His place in your life. Self pity is the most common. I was depressed for a while, for that very reason, but I was able to re-accept Christ in my life with a little help from Him through my boyfriend and a few other concerned friends. If one of your friends is feeling that way, just be as supportive as you can and Christ will work through you to bring your friend back to Him.

I'm trying to be supportive and am praying about it. My friend...just suddenly go into this funk he can't seem to get out of. he can't seem to get a job, there are family troubles, and his Aunt died recently. I believe that her death broke him. Ever since he's sounded so down, he'll chuckle now and then but it's not like it use to be.
I asked him if he's praying about it and askign GOd for help and strenght. He says, "I trust in the Lord to see me through," but the words just sound so empty, as if he doesn't believe them at all. Like they are just something you say in reponse to things like this. Everything seems to get him down, even the smallest thing. I'm trying so hard to be there for him....though at times it's hard to talk to him because it tends to bring me down. But I refuse to give up on him.

I'm a christian...and I have depression...and it has nothing to do with my faith...I'm not really sure what you mean by "Christian Depression" though...People are allowed to doubt, question...it doesn't make them not christian...everyone goes through it at least once in their life...and also, you have to remember that as christians we are supposed to suffer...so sadness is un-avoidable... whee

Tanaka Alexandre. She was a valued member of the Christian Guild I was in before hand, with Tazi and Rowena, and she suffered from Depression from Time to time. And you need to realize, that just because you're Christian, it doesn't mean that you're going to live a Strife free life. People have problems, you hit Pitfalls, and to look down on people for being depressed when it seems that Everything has been stacked against them at one specific point. It is true that Our Lord will never puts more on our plate than we can handle, but the plate still gets to looking pretty full sometimes. Yes, Christians get depressed. Alot of them. Some of the Greatest Teachers and followers of Christs word have lost their Cool, and fell in a pit of Depression at one point or another. To say you're immune to it, is false, and your BSing yourself.

I'm not saying that Christians can't get sad or be depressed but we are not suppose to stay that way. Right? How can you talk about the Joy of the Lord when you are moping all the time? It's just something I don't understand.
I have been sad, I get down because of things going on but I'm able to pull myself out of that depression because I know that the Lord is my strenght and my joy.
How can Christians be the light of the world if they are sadder than the unsaved folks out there? To everything there is a time and a season, as Ecclesiastes says, but at some point, trouble ends, it's over. You can rejoice in your sorrow and be happy because you know it's not always going to be this way.
Or maybe, I just have an odd view on it. I'm not saying that you can't be sad, or fall into depression every now and then, I just don't understand how a Christian can stay that way. That's what I mean by Christain depression. Sorry if it wasn't too clear earlier. Hope that helped sweatdrop

Sometimes the only thing you can do is to just be there for the person, and to give your support. I know this because some of the most staunch Christians I know get depressed and sad as well. My grandmother, for instance, got depressed very badly and tried to kill herself. It not only frightened me, but the rest of my family members as well. The funny thing was, she kept saying that she wanted to go and see Jesus. She told me that she was old and that she would have to leave soon. Depression happens. Only faith will see you through.

Faith...yes, Faith is a powerful thing and all Christians have Faith. All they need is a bit of Faith that the Lord will see them through.

I learned to look at the bright side of things... a friend of mine was really depressed.... but when she started to see how a christian friend of mine and I managed to be happy most of the time she started to ask questions and started to feel better.... she still didn't accept Christ as her Savior.... but she came a long way... 3nodding

I think you definatly had an impact in your friends life! Yes, Christians should show people that they don't have to be said...that there is a reason to smile and be joyful.

crying Depression can happen to anyone, even Christians. It can happen by being teased too much or having a chemical imbalance or something like that.
